USA!

Schoooooooools out for SUMMER!

The kids survived another year of school.
This group of people have been a huge part of our German life. Always a great time when we all get together!
Our neighbor, Suresh, had mentioned that he plays the Sitar, an Indian instrument. He and his wife, Anu, invited us over for coffee and a show. I am so glad we were able to get together before they moved back to the USA.
Valentino had a birthday party that was pretty amazing. Live music, hors d’oeuvres, too much wine, great friends, and lots of laughter. In our front yard. 🙂

And the next morning we caught a flight to the US for 2 weeks!! We weren’t planning on going but decided that it would be good for us to reconnect with family, friends, and coworkers. We won’t be in Germany forever, and saying goodbye to several of our friends here made me start thinking about what life will be like when we repatriate in December.

This. Brody snuggles. Despite me suggesting to Emily that she wait until we went to Des Moines the next weekend, a quick phone call from Ty in the car on the way home from Chicago had her throwing her kids in the car for 2 nights in Bettendorf.
Cousins. There are no better friends in life than cousins.
We have lots of extra beds. The Shivers are a snuggly bunch.
Baking with Memaw. Lily couldn’t WAIT to bake with Memaw. First request – Navajo tacos. YUMMY
The girls. A whole pile of Lily’s friends came over one night. Lots of squealing and laughter. So fun to catch up with their parents. Got some great tips about school and sports.
Sticker shock. I was excited to go to my favorite burrito joint, California Burritos. 1 burrito, a large chips & queso, and an iced tea. THIRTY DOLLARS!?!?!?!?
We spent the weekend in Des Moines. Friday night intense UNO Attack game.
Brody seemed to always win.
Not a good look for me, but be warned that playing Connect 4 with Oakleigh and Piggy is impossible, between Oaks dropping in extra circles and Piggy emptying them all out, I don’t think we got in a single round. 🙂
Some of Jess’s friends were having a party and we totally crashed it.
Ty got some driving practice in.
Jay and I ran out to Sundie & Brad’s to pick up my painting they brought back from Arizona for us. We will always have great memories of the Königstein Hauptstraße.
Papa and Jay got my cuckoo clock hung up.
The boys went to Iron Tee to hit some golf balls.
Aunt Brooke did an amazing job painting faces for the 4th of July
And Shelby knows how to make a parade a lot more fun!

Lacking photo evidence, but here were some more highlights. Car show with Gees and Coens. Patio parties with the Blint girls. Lunches with lots of friends. Reconnecting with coworkers. Dinner with the Bach’s. Car shopping for me. Baseball & softball with Coach Matt. Relaxing at Memaw & Papa’s. Staci & Brian. The biggest brunch. Fireworks and sparklers.

I didn’t take many pictures – I was just living in the moment. And I have been slacking on writing my blogs so I am sure I am forgetting to mention a lot of things. What I can’t forget is the feeling of home. There really is nothing like it.

We landed at 6 AM on Sunday. We got a lucky upgrade! We had just enough time to run home, drop our bags, get changed, and head to Lily’s softball game. She was a trooper!
But crashed as soon as we got home.

I didn’t realize how badly I needed that time in the US. I have loved our time in Germany. I could stay longer. But there are so many great things to look forward to back home. This trip reminded me of all of those things.

Courtney in Paris

How did I forget to post this?!? Court has a special skill – the pole trick. Any pole she sees is a potential prop. She wanted to be the last one off the gondola in Switzerland to get this photo.
After sending Adelle on her way, Jay, Court and I had dinner at Valentinos. Our favorite.
Court loved it so much she wanted to go back for a drink the next night. 🙂

Jay was on solo kid duty while I was Court’s tour guide in Paris for the weekend. Thanks Jay!!!

Court’s 1st European train ride
All aboard!!
It was HOT in Paris. Like ugh. But we had places to see and things to do, so we powered through. We checked into our hotel near Champs Elysee and walked to the Galeries Lafayette mall.
There is a rooftop with an amazing view of the city. I spy the Eiffel Tower.
Court at Court.
We meandered through the Palace Gardens. I didn’t take a picture, but we stood in this spot for several minutes watching a lady who was taking a nap standing up hugging a tree. She looked so peaceful. I’ve never seen that before, but the hustle and bustle and noise of the city tends to leave you amped up. This lady found her serenity amongst the sounds of the city.
We arrived at Notre Dame about an hour before they closed for the day. It was perfect timing – they weren’t letting anyone in after we left. The other times I have been to Paris, the church had been hiding behind scaffolding while they continued the 5-year renovation after a devastating fire. It has only been open about a month, so I feel blessed that we got to go inside. Amazing.
There she is – in all her glory.
Mass was in session while we were there. I’m not a good Catholic so I didn’t partake in Communion, and I didn’t understand a word that was said, but it was a beautiful experience.
Many of you know that I grew up on a farm between Perry and Ogden, Iowa. Perry address, Ogden school district. What you may NOT know is that the closest “town” is Berkeley. Not sure if it is even considered a town, more of a little rural community. I wonder if the restaurant owner got their inspiration from there?
Crossing the Champs Elysee and we stopped midway to snap a super quick selfie with the Arc de Triomphe photo bombing us.
Oh hey. There’s the Eiffel Tower.
Let’s ride the elevator up.
This view never gets old
Speaking of photo bombs. Court snapped a selfie (isn’t she gorgeous?!?) and didn’t realize that there was a couple smooching in the background. Paris is the city of love.
The pole at the top of the Eiffel Tower was Court’s next victim
Not my best angle, but it’s too cool of a shot to not post it.
We decided to take a Seine River Hop On Hop Off ferry to travel from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre. We had a couple hours to kill before out Louvre entrance time, so this was a nice way to see Paris from a different mode of transport.
Fun fact. Court is basically McGyver. She dropped her sunscreen lid through a the deck. I would have walked away and thrown out the sunscreen with no lid. Not Courtney. She rifled through her bag until she found something that she could use to get the lid close enough to where she could fit two fingers in a crack. SUCCESS!!!
Made it to the Louvre! I didn’t get any pictures inside, but she saw the Mona Lisa. 🙂
Wishing Emily were with us
The other times I have been to Paris, we have been tuckered out by sunset to go back to the Eiffel Tower at night. Every hour there is a beautiful light show for about 5 minutes. So glad we found a second wind and went to see it!
I think everyone single person in Paris was in our bus after the tower light show. Packed in like sardines, but luckily we were crammed against the front window.
Court took lots of pictures during that bus ride. None of them turned out – they were all partially covered by a black screen. Mystery solved.

Court has had a hell of a year. She has shown strength, resilience, tenacity, and class when many others would crumble. I have hated the fact that I have not been able to physically be there for her. I am so thankful that we got to spend this time together making happy, hilarious, healing, amazing new memories. It’s a big world out there, and I loved being able to show her a part of it.

Court & Adelle in Switzerland

I’m WAY behind on my updates, so bear with me as I try to get caught up.

In early June, we had a couple friends visit us, so naturally we had to book some weekend trips. Twist my arm.

Blog readers, meet Adelle. I met Adelle when our daughters played 7U softball together. She is one of the most badass women I have ever met. She lived in Germany with the military several years ago and tacked on a solo trip to a work trip.
I asked Lily to mow the yard. You can see how well that worked out once Adelle saw what she was doing…. Still in her work clothes!
We relived some awesome softball coaching memories with Deanna one night.
Blog readers, meet Courtney. She has been my bestie since 4th grade. Life of the party, always up for an adventure, and all around cool chica.
We dropped Ty off at baseball and grabbed a beer at Waldgeist after taking Kaycee for a forest hike.
Probst!!!

Court and Adelle have never met. I started a group text to introduce them to each other and start to make some plans since their visits overlapped. I knew they would get along great. During one of our pre-trip chats, Adelle mentioned wanting to get a tattoo. Next thing you know, they decided to get matching tattoos. So we made it happen. About a half hour after Adelle and Court met in person, we headed to the tattoo shop. It was hilarious to tell the tattoo artist that the two of them only met an hour earlier and were getting identical tats.

I was more than a little nervous – this was my first time getting inked. But it ended up being super relaxing and only hurt a little bit. I will definitely go for round two.
The artwork is complete!

Immediately after, the three of us hopped in the car and headed to our favorite holiday home in Sisikon, Switzerland. I posted about this place last spring and was waiting for the perfect opportunity to have a repeat visit. Jay waited for the kids to get out of school then the 3 of them met us.

Not a photoshopped or AI background…just raw Alpine beauty
We went on a new adventure. Thanks to Adelle’s determination to figure out the ferry routes and tickets, she got us all squared away and we rode the boat 2 hours to Lucerne. We thought we would ride for a bit then hop off and take a train the rest of the way, but we were having such a great time on the boat so we just stayed.
Unfortunately when we got to Lucerne it started to rain. After Jay and I spent hundreds of dollars on new rain coats (Adelle bought a 5 EUR poncho), the rain stopped. Figures.

A little rain didn’t slow us down! We walked around, did a little shopping, and ate some yummy fondue.

Jay helped water the river
The next day we took a gondola up to Mount Pilatus. We soaked in the views, and ate lunch before heading back down. We caught the gondola from the peak to the first stop. The line was crazy long so we decided to hike down to the next gondola stop.
Court taught Lily how to make napkin origami

Jay, Court and Adelle hiked down (not from the very top) and beat Ty, Lily, and I who waited in line for a gondola.

While traveling in a foreign country, you learn a lot about yourself. You adapt to many things that are outside of your comfort zone, but you also realize what things you absolutely cannot live without. For Court, that thing is ice. She MUST have ice in her drinks. Surprisingly most waiters/waitresses gave her what she wanted when she asked for it. We had to stop at a gas station on our way to the holiday home so she could buy a bag. 10 EUR later on e got this tiny little bag, but her drinks were cold!
Court loves to paddleboard. Our home had one available, so despite the frigid water temperatures, she took it out for a float.
That view…
Wine, chocolate, pizza, and Code Names
Did I mention that Court is an adrenaline junky? She wanted to go paragliding, and since Ty wasn’t able to go when Aunt Jekka visited, he was quick to agree to jump with her.
Adelle and I dropped them off to make their way up the mountain and we ran into town to find a toilet. Here is Adelle’s recap of her experience.

Most memorable toiletten experience. May be TMI for some, sorry but I have to share.

Went to the cutest Backerei today in hopes we could get breakfast and I could use the RR before we hit the road.

The lady handed us a key and said there was no wasser (water) but to go around the building and it was there.

I walked up and was a little hesitant to open the door. Inside there was a pisser and a seat with mulch next to it. I was a little confused but then I saw the sign with the instructions. Basically when you’re done doing your business you put some mulch on it and it reduces the smell and keeps the bathroom clean.

I went ahead and completed the full experience and can confirm the mulch works. 😂

Meanwhile, Ty and Court were ready to jump!
Ty doesn’t get too excited about things, but “bruh, it was pretty cool”.
Court was jealous that Ty got to take control of the steering for a bit.
Super pumped, happy, and all in one piece!
Court was offered a job if she could carry the pack back. She made it. Very tempting job offer….

I told you these ladies are awesome. :). I have the BEST friends. A weekend in the Alps, full of good times and laughter. These memories will last as long as our tattoos!

When we got back to Frankfurt, we said goodbye to Adelle (boo) and rested up for the next weekend’s adventure with Courtney. Stay tuned!!

A Week with the Weder’s

I just had the BEST week! My cousins came to visit us – Missy, Ryan, Raea, Braden, Jakob, and Justin. I have not laughed as much as I did this week in a really long time. Missy is my dad’s sister’s daughter. I usually see this crew once a year at our annual Geisler Family Annual Camping Extravaganza (GFACE) every Labor Day weekend. I missed it last year and will miss it again this year. Thankfully they brought a little flavor of the festivities to Germany. So. Much. Fun.

They arrived Sunday morning. We had hoped to go watch Ty and Lily play ball after they got settled, but it was cold, rainy, and they were all pretty exhausted. So we had a chill day instead. We went for a couple walks around the town and castle, some snoozes were snuck in, and we ate dinner at Da Toto.

What kind of hospital is it, Jakob?
Love these ladies!!
Unfortunately the castle wasn’t open but they at least got to see it from outside the gate
The entertainment committee has arrived
Braden paid for his lodging by mowing the lawn

Unfortunately I had to work Monday-Wednesday (wah wah), so I sent them off on their own for some day trips. On Monday they took a tour of Frankfurt (Frankfurt on Foot Walking Tour with Jo). Tuesday they went to Köln to see the Lindt chocolate museum and the Kölner Dom. The cathedral blew their minds – it was definitely a highlight of their week. Wednesday morning Jay arranged a John Deere Mannheim factory tour, then they went down to Heidelberg to see the castle. I finally got to join the fun on Wednesday after work. I met up with them in Heidelberg and we drove down to the Black Forest.

Photobombed by a castle
The chilly weather continued but the boys were able to get a great fire roaring
I spy

Ryan’s ancestors are from Oberhöfen, Switzerland, so we took a day trip on Thursday to explore the area. Twist my arm, I suppose I can go to the Alps for a day….

We took a tour of the Oberhöfen castle (thanks Gabi!). It has been kept up pretty well and is beautiful. I mean, if I had to, I could probably live there.
Glamour shots with Missy

We were actually secretly trying to scope out the best place for THIS to happen:

She said YES!!!!
She might have been in shock.
I can’t handle the cuteness.
We had to tell Raea that no, she could not bring the kitty that witnessed the proposal home with her.
If you were wondering how excited Jakob is to have another brother…
Love
We got a tip from a waiter to go check out the suspension bridge at Sigriswil
The 3 Stooges
I am glad I went on it, but I will not do that again. I’m not afraid of heights, but the movement was nicht zu gut…. I felt like I was drunk and couldn’t walk straight.
Looks like a Bob Ross painting
So I might be the worst mom on the planet. I completely spaced off that Thursday was German Father’s Day. Ty was in the Netherlands with some friends, so Lily and Kaycee saved the day with a complaint-free hike and tacos for dinner.
Friday morning we “hiked” to the Todtnauer Wasserfall, the largest waterfall in Germany. Easy parking, hiking, and beautiful waterfall!
Black Forest Cake
So in love

We spent a few hours in Triberg supporting the local cuckoo clock economy before heading back to Königstein to pack for the return flight to the US.

Ugh. I LOVE having visitors, but I HATE saying goodbye. The week flew by, and I wasn’t ready for them to leave. I am so thankful that they decided to spend their vacation with us. I am thrilled for Raea and Justin and will cherish being able to be a part of their special moment. We packed a LOT into a week, and came away with a lifetime of memories.

Tulip Time at Keukenhof

When we first moved to Germany, my sister, Sundie, told me that we have to go to Keukenhof in The Netherlands in the spring. I’m so glad she clued us in to this little piece of paradise!

Our quick trip started with a mild panic situation. Jay and I had dinner on the patio at Valentinos Friday night. This is our favorite place in Königstein – and it happens to be in our front yard. We adore the owner, Valentino, and the main waiter, Ari. It’s our own little “Cheers”. I put my purse on the back of the chair, had a great meal, and when Lily’s takeaway dish was ready, we paid and left. Pretty normal chain of events.

Saturday morning as I was gathering my things together to hit the road, I realized my purse was not hanging on the hook by the door. I looked around the house but I immediately remembered that I left it on the chair, on the outside patio, at the restaurant. Crap. I ran outside and looked for it at the restaurant. Not there. I started texting my friend, Tally, who I knew went to the restaurant after we left (again – it’s like Cheers). She hadn’t heard about it. I checked our mailbox, thinking maybe Ari dropped it in there when he found it. Not there.

Tally encouraged me to wake up Valentino. It was 7:30 in the morning. I really didn’t want to wake him up, but I needed to get on the road to make our garden entrance time. I knew which building he lived in, but didn’t know his last name. Some quick detective work and I figured it out, saw his name on the doorbell, appeased the button, and prayed that he would forgive me for waking him up. He buzzed me in. It was clear that I woke him up. His dog, Mafiosa, was not happy with me. He was so confused to see me at his door. He speaks some English, but not a lot. He likes to say “my English is not so sexy today”. His brain wasn’t prepared to translate, so between his broken English and my broken German, I told him I left my Handtasche (purse) on the patio. He didn’t see it, and Ari didn’t say anything to him. My heart dropped. My mind started racing about what I was going to have to do – call the Polizei, cancel bank and credit cards, get a new drivers license, call the hotel to see if they would accept my husband’s credit card, get cash from Jay, and the list goes on.

He called Ari – and of course woke him up. Ari said that he DID find my purse!! It was sitting under a blanket all night and he didn’t find it until closing up after midnight. If I could have jumped through the phone to hug him, I would have. Valentino and I walked over to the restaurant, he went in the back, and found my purse!!!!

Tally and I have talked a lot about the things we will miss when we move back to the US (she is also an expat). Valentinos tops our list.

With that crisis averted, Lily and I were able to load up the car and head to the Netherlands – still on time! We arrived at Keukenhof and my first thought was “gosh, the parking lot is massive here” – and it was FULL.

We made it!
Look it up on Google maps to truly appreciate how huge this place is. The areas marked P are 2 giant parking lots. The fields around the garden property are full of tulips.
This is not my photo – but it shows the giant fields of flowers. We drove by some of these on our way to Keukenhof, but it is not what the park looks like. I was expecting this – I was wrong.

And now I am going to bombard your screen with selfies of Lily and I with gorgeous flowers in the background.

This is the only place where you could see the flower fields
I need an arbor like this in my life
Go Cyclones!
Cool bridge
We put Lily to work hauling some flowers in a wheelbarrow
Another creative walkway – lily pads!

After exploring the gardens for a couple hours, we went into town to check into our hotel. We stayed at Boutique Suites Lisse, which was right on the Main Street pedestrian area. Saturday was the King’s birthday, and every year the Dutch celebrate by partying in the street all decked out in orange.

We started to walk into this sea of orange, but Lily didn’t love it, so we left pretty quickly.
We found a quieter restaurant with a patio. How can you tell we are in the Netherlands? So. Many. Bikes.

Lily took a bunch of videos and pictures and put them into a YouTube post. Check it out. Spend a Day with Me at Keukenhof Garden

We rarely get to hang out with just the two of us, so this was a pretty special trip. One I won’t ever forget!

Atlantis The Palm

We split our vacation into 2 – city and beach resort. We all enjoyed the city but the consensus is that we wish we had more time at the beach. The Atlantis on The Palm Jumeira is an awesome resort.

We were greeted by the Easter Bunny. This little mascot was HILARIOUS. His suit was inflatable, so he literally jumped on Ty and Jay. I was so bummed that despite thinking I had hit record video, I didn’t. But we got some great belly laughs.
Lily and Jay immediately put on their swimsuits and jumped in. They only had a little time before they closed the pool. Wah wah.
Ty and I opted to lounge instead of swim.
You can’t tell in the still photo, but the hotel has glittery flashing lights all over it at night. So pretty!
The kids didn’t want to go to dinner, so Jay and I snuck in a date night at Nobu. The menu was a little overwhelming so we trusted our sweet waiter, Joy, to bring us some of her favorites. We tried 8 different dishes and every single one was incredible. We maybe would have ordered 2-3 off the menu, but we were blown away with the dishes we wouldn’t have ordered.
View from our room. Dubai on one side.
It’s hazy but you can see the Burj Khalifa way off in the distance
You can see a bit of the ocean out this window.
Ty wanted to sleep in. I booked a massage. So Lily and Jay headed to the water park.
I decided to stop by the salon after my massage. My hair was feeling and looking like crap (really missing Brian!!!!). I was able to get right into a chair with Jad, who was an awesome hair stylist. My hair looks and feels so much better! Not sure how Jay is going to feel about me booking a return trip in 10 weeks for my next cut….
This blown glass sculpture in the middle of the lobby is so beautiful
Ty and I explored the nooks and crannies of the hotel. There is a giant aquarium – a perfect spot for a stingray photo bomb.
This hat was on a mannequin in a shop window. After spending over half my career in Treasury, most of that managing cash, (and being addicted to buying hats), I couldn’t walk away without this one. The sign in the background was perfect. I need a HUGe amount of money. 🙂
Another photo of the glass sculpture
Ty and I joined Jay and Lily on Wednesday morning at the water park. Hotel guests have early access, so Jay and Ty were able to quickly ride most of the water slides. This hotel holds the World Record for most water slides in a park. Lily and I opted for the crazy River – a lazy River but with rapids in different sections.
The kids were exhausted so while they napped, Jay and I took an Uber to the Dubai Marina. Lots of yachts. Great people watching.
The area was huge, and it was sooooo hot, so we rented scooters

Update on the tour from Hell. I confirmed that the tour guide gave himself 5 stars and wanted me to just add some comments and submit. That explains the 4.5 star review for the company. I have submitted my complaints and had the rating changed to 1 star. Unbelievable.

Our flight leaves early tomorrow morning, so it will be early to bed and early to rise. Taxi is booked for 5:00 am…. Ugh. Back to reality.

Goodbye Dubai! وداعا دبي

Abu Dhabi Do’s & Don’ts

I have booked many tours over the years. I have had some great ones, some OK ones, and this trip I booked the Worst Tour Guide Ever.

The kids already don’t love it when I book a tour guide. They don’t necessarily care to be told fun facts about sites (I do). And they certainly don’t want to spend time planning in advance (I don’t either). So I roll the dice, cross my fingers, and hope the reviews are factual.

I booked a Private Tour to Abu Dhabi through Get Your Guide (have had good luck with that app in the past). The tour was provided by Dream Journey. “Private” does not mean “luxury”, and Dream Journey was more like a Nightmare Journey.

Spoiler alert. We survived.

After several WhatsApp chats to confirm the time, and me yelling at the kids to hurry up and get ready, we can’t be late – he showed up 25 minutes late.

Our guide’s name was Zohaib. He rolls up in this POS SUV that might be fine for busting through sand dunes, but not really ideal for a 1+ hour drive. He had not cleaned his car in possibly forever. It appeared as though the airbag had exploded at some point. We all know how much Jay likes his cars – his feed is full of sweet rides. This, folks, was not a sweet ride.

As our luggage was getting shoved on top of his personal crap in the back of his vehicle, I looked at Jay and said, “if we’re going to bail, we better do it now.” We didn’t bail.

Awkward silence. I think maybe he had said his name once, but then it was silent. Um….

So after about 5 minutes I said, “What do you have planned for us today?”

“Just wait, I will tell you on the tour.”

I thought we were already ON the tour?!?!?!

Ty immediately started rapid fire texting our family group chat. “Bro, what’s this guys deal? Do we really have to spend the next 7 hours with him?”

He then talked to his wife on the phone in Hindi. Mrs. Zohaib. The. Whole. Drive.

Well, he stopped talking long enough to pull over and fill up with fuel. Apparently he didn’t plan ahead (weird) and thought that it was professional to spend part of our time at the fuel station. On a positive note, him getting out of the car gave us a few minutes to all look at each other, say “what the heck is happening?”, come up with a plan to get through the day as quickly as possible, and try to find the positives.

And then he filled up the air in his tires. Not exactly portraying confidence in our ability to arrive at our destination.

At one point he stopped talking to Mrs. Zohaib long enough to turn on the radio for about 10 minutes.

And then she called again. Back to silence. And family texting.

We arrived in Abu Dhabi and he drove us to Yas Island. I would love to tell you amazing facts about the island, but I didn’t learn a thing. I did, however, see the parking lot for Ferrari World.

Next stop in the tour was some sketchy market. From what I could tell, the sold a lot of dates. But Zohaib didn’t tell us anything. He just stopped the car, got out, went inside a shop, poured himself a coffee. Um. Ok? So what, we walk through this parking lot of date shops? Moving on….

Let’s drive by the Emirates Palace Hotel. It’s the 2nd most expensive hotel in the UAE. We literally did a drive by, through the check-in area, and we drove right on through…. If you are wondering why there are not many pictures in this blog, it’s because so far there were no good photos to be taken.

Maybe the Heritage Village will be worth seeing. From what I gathered by my powers of observation (definitely not from learning about it from our tour guide), it’s basically like a Living History Farms on a tiny scale. There was a nice view of the city and the water.

I did find inspiration for the blog title here

But wait. There’s more.

This part is actually good. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the 3rd largest mosque in the world. It was massive. And beautiful.

After putting on appropriate attire for visiting the mosque – a prayer dress that covered me from head to toes (hot hot hot), our tour guide said “go have a look and come back to the car when you are done.” Ok??????? We walked through a shopping mall, food court, and looooong hallways to the entrance of the mosque. White marble + Bright Sun = so hard to open our eyes. But it was gorgeous.

I don’t think I had the shawl on quite right
We heard ONE fun fact from our tour guide – this is one continuous handmade carpet that took 2 years to make.
Gorgeous chandeliers

We grabbed a bite to eat at the food court because we did not trust Zohaib’s ability to find us a nice place to eat, and then we headed back to Dubai.

Normally when we book through Get Your Guide, we get a link to complete a survey and share feedback about 24 hours after the excursion. Zohaib was pressuring me in the car to submit the feedback while driving home and send him a screenshot of it. “Just a few words is fine.” Yeah, no. I’m going to need some time with this one.

And then when we arrived at our hotel, he asked again if I sent the review. No, Zohaib, I have not, and I’m pretty sure you don’t want to see what I have to say. Awkward.

I learned some things on this trip that I want to share.

Do: Skip the “tour” and rent a car to visit Abu Dhabi for the day. we could have rented a Mercedes G-Wagon for $100 more for the day. And then I would have had a better driver (Jay), control of the radio, a seatbelt that didn’t lock up every time I leaned forward, and control of our time.

Don’t, for the love of all things holy, book a tour with Zohaib.

Do: Visit the mosque. But bring sunglasses. And buy a pretty lightweight prayer dress anywhere in Dubai (or at the entrance) with a separate head shawl.

Don’t: buy a prayer shawl on Amazon in advance

Don’t waste your time on Yas Island unless you are actually going to visit one of the theme parks (there are several).

Do: end the worst tour ever by checking into the Atlantis Palm hotel. I will write more about that later, but the day went from a low to a high.

Do: Forgive me for sounding like a complaining, whiny, spoiled rotten little brat. I know how lucky I am to experience the things we get to see and do. And I truly am thankful. I’m also going to remind the kids about this every time I turn on the Gypsy Guide (Audio Tour that they HATE and I LOVE) in our comfy vehicles with dad behind the wheel that I could ask Zohaib to come give us the tour instead….

Easter Camel

Lily wanted to see a few things in the Dubai Mall, so we spent Saturday wandering around again. We couldn’t pass by the Aquarium without a visit. I failed to do any research and just bought a ticket. I thought it was just an entrance ticket but apparently it included a glass bottom boat ride.

We were a little confused why we needed to wear life jackets to walk through the aquarium. Ohhhhhh it’s a boat ride!
No rapids, no speedboat. Just sharks (a lot of them).
We walked into one area and parrots flew right over our heads. See that little stinker in the background laughing at us.
Well hello there, long lost cousin.
This was pretty cool to see – 2 seahorses holding tails
Next stop was the Arte Museum. The Flower room smelled amazing and was b-e-a-utiful!
The waterfall room was amazing.

Check out Lily’s video of the waterfalls! https://youtube.com/shorts/-LPm5KeS568?si=A3sc-OlNGwNb2CUl

The waves were crashing all around.
Lily colored a dolphin, scanned it into the computer…

And then we watched her artwork come to life on the screen! https://youtube.com/shorts/ZKJB2sTPTvU?si=oNF7cEYEJe8HXk-k

We had dinner at Atmosphere on the 123rd floor of the Burj Khalifa. Not quite the top, but close.
The atmosphere was 5 stars.

Unfortunately the food was 3-stars. Limited menu, which is fine, but then I expect each dish to be incredible- especially for the $$$. I’m not sure I would recommend it to others. Save your dining money and just get a ticket to At The Top to see the views.

The dessert was the best part. https://youtube.com/shorts/a4Wdfs-8j3A?si=BZsz6gDuJucH6lhB

We are staying at a VRBO right next to the Burj Khalifa, overlooking the Dubai Fountains. It’s a perfect location. We can watch the fountain show from our balcony. We were so lucky to see the last shows before they closed it down for renovations. https://youtube.com/shorts/R8qMEk_wLH8?si=-Wc8RhKJ19-0ke0Q

The Burj Khalifa puts on an incredible light show several times a night – over 1.2 million LED lights! https://youtube.com/shorts/cdFX7FgHC50?si=9Yv0lDYVM3OCdu0s

Have you seen pictures of the Dubai Frame? It’s kind of random, seemingly in the middle of nowhere right next to the highway. We didn’t go inside.
We spent Sunday in the Old Town. So. Much. Gold.
Unfortunately now is about the worst time to buy gold, so Ty’s hopes of getting a gold chain were crushed. He did, however, learn about economics, the flight to quality, gold standard, and buy low/sell high.
I can’t even imagine the price tag on these. Rows and rows of shops full of gold.
The spice market area smelled amazing
I loved the lights that were in many of the shops
We hopped on a water taxi to visit the Al Fahidi area.
The whole neighborhood was full of buildings that looked like this. Again, felt like a Disney movie set.
Fantastic salt and pepper shakers
We failed to give our kids a proper Easter egg hunt, but we tried to make up for it with a Camel Milk Chocolate instead. Do you eat the legs or the head first?
While we are off exploring, Kaycee’s favorite friend, Vivalda, is spoiling him rotten (and making adorable GIFs).

Arabian Nights

The kids were tired of seeing “old stuff” so we decided to go to Dubai for Spring Break – where everything is shiny and new.

A quick <6 hour flight from Frankfurt, 2 hour time difference
The Burj Khalifa – tallest building in the world. At about 2,750’ tall (a HALF MILE), this thing is massive. It makes all the other skyscrapers look like little babies, even though they are “normal” size. When the fountain show in front of it is doing its performance, the lights on the Burj Khalifa put in a performance of their own.
I could write an entire blog about the fancy bathrooms. This one is in the Dubai Mall.
We spent a few hours wandering around the Dubai Mall – the largest mall in the world. We walked 4 miles and I think we maybe saw a quarter of the mall.
Beautiful.

Ok so don’t judge. But we ate Texas Roadhouse for lunch. We walked by and Dierks was playing in the sound system, basically begging me to come inside (and we all know I can’t say no to Dierks). We haven’t had Texas Roadhouse for a year. The ROLLS and cinnamon butter!! Crispy cold salad with yellow cheese and RANCH DRESSING!!!! A loaded baked potato. We were all in our little quiet bliss while we savored every delicious bite.

Ty has reached the stage where he is interested in his appearance – and clothes. Since he and Jay separated from Lily and I for a bit, he modeled his purchases when we got back to our apartment. So handsome.
Our evening entertainment was a desert safari, hosted by Platinum Heritage Luxury Tours. We drove out of the city about 45 minutes and saw some interesting things. This is a camel taxi.

We passed a Camel Hospital and Camel Racetrack. The racetrack has 50,000 racing camels. That was not a typo. They only race during the winter months so we won’t be able to see one in person, but wouldn’t that be an amazing thing to see?!?!

We arrived at the base camp and transferred to our vintage Land Rover. Such a cool car!
So handsome!
I mean….he is so stinking cute.
We drove through a desert conservation area for about an hour.
Arabian Sand Gazelle
Can you spy the Mountain Gazelle?

We also saw Arabian Oryx, which is the national animal of United Arab Emirates. They were too far away to get a good photo of, though.

Best. Photo bomb. Ever
The sand was SO soft.
My little mini me
My babies
We had a chance to get a meet and greet with the star performer in the sunset falcon show. Ty wasn’t scared.
Jay didn’t mind holding it.
I liked it!
But Lily wasn’t so sure….
Desert selfie
We arrived at our evening camp and were greeted by these three beautiful creatures.

I was most looking forward to riding a camel. I mean, it’s not every day that I get to ride a camel in the desert. How do I describe what it is like to ride a camel? I assumed it would be somewhat similar to riding a horse. You climb on from the right side and straddle its back. From there the similarities end.

You don’t climb on a horse while it is laying on the ground. The camel has to go from it’s nice comfy resting place on the sand to standing, navigating its long legs to an upright position. It starts by straightening its rear legs, lurching you forward.
And then it kind of jumps to get its front legs straightened out, throwing you back in the seat. And when you finish your ride, you have to dismount from the laying down position, so you get to experience it in reverse – first the front legs, then the back legs. I don’t know if you can tell from the photos, but I loved it. Lily, not so much….
Jay chose to hang back and take photos/videos. Even though there was a professional photographer. Let’s be honest, folks. Jay was scared to ride the camel. We almost had him talked into it at one point but the camel guy was eating dinner. Maybe next time we are in the desert with camel rides available he will climb aboard.

The sand is not solid footing, so with every step they kind of slide around. We went at a slow walking pace. I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to avoid falling off on a race camel going 60 km/hr!

This isn’t an optical illusion. The neck of the camel is almost as tall as I am. They were such gentle giants. I tried not to take offense when they grunted and moaned when I climbed aboard, and tried to give them extra love when I got off to thank them for their service. So cool.

Yes, we rode the camels at night. The sunset is around 6:45. Because it is so hot when the sun is shining, the night brings a bit of relief. We spent a couple hours at our evening campsite, the weather a perfect temperature. While I’m sure it is fine to ride camels in the daylight, I wasn’t complaining about having a cooler experience.

Lily and I got henna tattoos
The men performed some traditional Arab songs and dances, but let’s be honest. The little girl stole the show.
Dinner was delicious and way too much food. Starters included lentil soup, hummus, baba ghanoush, salads, pita bread.
Main course included chicken skewers, chicken porridge, lamb, camel, and 3 different types of rice.

The chicken skewer was delicious. The chicken porridge was not my favorite. I had a few good pieces of lamb before I tasted the smell of the lambing shed (if you know, you know) and I couldn’t eat anymore. I tried the camel, which wasn’t terrible. It was tough, kind of tasted like a super lean not great cut of beef. Kind of.

After dinner Jay and I smoked a tobacco-free hookah, which they call Shisha here. I had to try it, but I can’t say I will do it again. It was a sweet flavor – Abid said it was apple but we think it was black licorice. I coughed after every inhale, like a true rookie. A stargazer gave us an astronomy lesson while we listened to the bubble of everyone’s shisha (and my occasional cough).

Dessert in the desert was not Strawberry Shortcake (see what I did there), but there was fruit (including strawberries) and these delicious little fried date syrup balls called luqaimat.

I couldn’t stop smiling the whole evening. Nor could I stop singing “Arabian nights” which was on repeat in my mind. This whole place is a real life Disney World. Over the top, magical, igniting all of your senses. It’s like nowhere else in the world.

Auf GTS!!! (Let’s gooooooooo!)

Today, for I think the first time ever, I am going to publish a post from a guest author – the one and only Jay Shearer. He is more than a little excited about his fancy new German souvenir.

Its Sunday 2 March and I just got to the Steigenberger Graf Zeppelin in route to my 08:00 pickup of my 2025 Shark Blue Porsche 6MT Cayman GTS 4.0.

A bit about my back story, I’ve had the pleasure of owning a few fun cars in my life so far, but never a Porsche.  Through my work I have had the pleasure of working on multiple continents and am currently on my 2nd 2-3 year expat assignment here in Germany (my first was in Australia ~8 years ago).  During my last expat assignment I attended quite a few car shows in Australia and ended up tracking down a mostly restored 1955 Holden FJ Utility, buying it to have there for the last year and then shipping it home with us.  My wife thought it was a bit of an extravagant souvenir from our time abroad, but she went into this one eyes wide open that I’d likely be looking for another souvenir here :).  Since importing to the US anything less then 25 years old meant that I was doing most of my searching in aircooled 911s, it didn’t take long before she realized that she really didn’t appreciate the 80/90s style and she hesitated about filling another garage space with a car that I would only drive on the weekends.  It was settled, I would buy new and take a Euro delivery to get to experience it as long as I could here in Germany.  My daily commute is 100km each way down the A5/67 from the Frankfurt area to either Mannheim or Walldorf and I’m anxious to park my 320/330d wagon and drive daily the CGTS on special days.

Since this is my first Porsche it took a bit to find a dealer with an allocation I could spec and who was willing to sell to my at MSRP.  We were home for a funeral in July when everything finally fell together.  I ended up getting an allocation by way of a posting on one of the Facebook 718GTS groups.  Dealer was Porsche Detroit North (roughly 450 miles away from my home back in the states) but transaction was fairly easy, a couple phone calls, various exchanges of build specs and a $5k deposit later and I was all set to start tracking my build!!!

I have never driven a Cayman, so while I was home my son and I drove to our nearest dealer in Peoria IL to check out some options.  They had a GT4RS that had the buckets we could test out, done deal, I knew I was going to pair the legendary NA Flat6 with the 6MT so that was also a done deal.  The truck I left at home is a Hydro Blue Ram TRX so the color was also a no brainer, Shark Blue, but everything else was lots of back and forth reading forums, asking friends.  I defaulted to a heavier optioned car with Burmeister and Leather/Racetex we’ll see what I like and what I can live without, I don’t expect this will be the last Porsche I own (hopefully).

The build process was great to track through the app, enjoyed seeing the stages, but sad about not having the actual pictures like prior builds at Zuff.  Then the day came in November when it was Finished!!!  Only problem was that I didn’t want to take delivery until Spring.  The Porsche NA team was great, they worked with me and the schedule we went back and forth quite a bit and settled on an early March delivery, they don’t have a bunch of storage space and of course they likely have more veteran customers then me that would like the sought after spring/fall dates.

I was hoping to have 6 months with the car in country but the max they allow is 90 with the insurance/license packages.  I’m sure I’ll be able to squeeze plenty of fun into the next 2 months.  Trips to the Nürburgring of course, Hockenheimring is one of my favorites to watch racing so will hopefully get a chance to drive my car there as well (doing a GT3 experience there in April).  Schwartzwald, hopefully some time down in Switzerland (Lucerne is our favorite place to visit) and as many other tracks and I can get her to.

Post 2 Delivery Day

Oh man what an experience… I’m not going to lie, after a mediocre steak dinner that I had high hopes for (restaurant advertised Prime US beef…) I didn’t get much sleep Sunday night.  Normally you would see this from jet lagged folks coming from the US/Canada but mine was all excitement driven!

Hotel was good, breakfast was good, quick 20 minute cab ride to the Porsche Werke 4 (compliments of the PorscheNA team voucher) and I was inside the showroom of the dealership that plays temporary home to the delivery process.  Met Sean, Gary and Tesra (probably butchered names sorry guys!) who I would be tagging along with most of the day as Sean picked up his new gorgeous Guards Red GT3RS with all the go fast goodies.  We had a coffee and wandered around the showroom checking out the huge assortment of special 911s, Caymans, Spyders, 918, etc.  There are bigger Porsche showrooms around Germany, but this one had the fewest number of Macans/Cayennes/Taycans that I’ve seen.

Melanie was my delivery person, she took me over to the delivery area where a sheet covered my CGTS as well as 5-6 other cars being delivered that day.  Was told they typically do 2 US/Can deliveries per day (roughly 300-400/year) and then 6 German/European deliveries per day.  Melanie fired up the cloth puller and I was totally stoked, while it didn’t compare to the multiple GT3RS’s around me, this one was the one I wrote the check for and designed from day one, and will for sure be a memory I always cherish.  Posed for a professional photo they gave me later, she walked me through all the PCM functions, and setting the car up for me.  Probably spent 30-45 minutes there.  Signed a few documents, got a couple nice gifts and then was out the door with my new ride.  While the initial cold start was a bit underwhelming (was hoping for closer to my Hellcat TRX…) it is something I can fix when I’m back home.

The factory tour was amazing.  I’m no newbie when it comes to factories, my career has put me into dozens of large equipment manufacturing facilities, but the access we got to the assembly line and upholstery was something normally not granted to outside tours, I was super happy with the couple hours we spent and blown away with the amount of hand craftsmanship that goes into everything (especially the upholstery).  My favorite fun fact was that it takes roughly 7 (young cow and/or racetex) hides to cover an interior.  While the assembly line was a finely oiled engineering masterpiece as you would expect from a Germany company, the upholstery shop was nothing short of artwork aided by digital technologies.

Lunch was great, a bit of bubbly wine to celebrate the day, great duck and soup and then I sent Sean and the boys off on their amazing plan for the next week or so and I headed home to take the family for rides (even picked my son up from basketball practice so he was able to show his buddies the new ride).

After my somewhat reserved drive back home and to work this morning I’m at 500+ km and hoping to keep it going up so she’ll be ready for the Ring on Sunday.

Post 3 Week 1 + Nurburgring!!!

Well I’d like to say that I had a super exciting first week with the CGTS, but Tuesday to Friday was back to the normal grind.  My commute from home to either of the offices I frequent is roughly 300km round trip.  The bad news is I was still obeying break-in procedures, but the good news is that normally that commute is 75% unrestricted autobahn.  I typically head into work at 6:00am so the traffic is light and in my 320d/330d wagons I regularly cruise at 220+kph.  I kept it responsible this week but still enjoyed the experience of the beautiful noises from behind me and the Burmeister in front of me.

The kids enjoyed being able to ride around in the Porsche this week, but the wife has requested I start looking at an 18way seat for her passenger princess throne…

(Nicole here to add some commentary). The seats are TERRIBLE. Sure, if you are 100% driving around a racetrack, I can understand why you would want to be squeezed into a tight little place. But 100% of the time for me I will NOT be on a racetrack. I will be cruising down a normal road, most likely straight, and I am not going to deal with bruised hips. *end rant*

My office in Walldorf is only 10 minutes from Hockenheimring, so I cruised by there on Friday on my way home for a quick picture. No luck in sneaking onto the track.  Couple mods this week, installed my Zunsport grills, super easy to do and very happy with the look and fitment.  Also ordered a set of amazon key fob covers, I tried to purchase the SB ones at the dealership during the delivery, but they said they would need to order them… saved myself 80euro in the process.

Sunday was the highlight of the week, and maybe one of the highlights of my automotive life.  My son and I got the go-pro set up and headed up North to Nurburg to visit The Ring!  It was a bit over an hour drive, mainly a-bahn but a few fun country highways at the start and end.  WHAT AN EXPERIENCE.  My son was an excellent spotter, helping me keep tabs on the GT3RS’ (and pretty much everything else on the track) that were passing me.  While I definitely had a couple sections where I felt comfortable pushing it, there are so many blind hills/corners and the fact that it was opening weekend for Touristenfahrten there were a ton of people like me on the track as well.  Both of those equal a much more conservative drive then I would have loved.  We ended after 3.5 laps, my passenger couldn’t take the last lap and we may have had a slight incident which necessitated stopping by the first gas station and buying bottles of water to wash down the passenger side…

(Nicole here to insert some additional commentary) I TOLD Ty to grab some puke bags on their way out the door. I know how Jay drives on a normal curvy road, so I can only imagine what the ride would be like on an actual racetrack. “Mom, I don’t get carsick anymore.” But still, it doesn’t hurt anything to just take them along, just in case. “Nope, I don’t need them.” Mama knows best.

Nevertheless, the experience was one I’ll remember forever.  From scanning the bar code for the first time, the gates lifting and then driving out onto a track which I had spent hours of my childhood roaring around in Playstation games, to giggling everytime we were passed and listening to the roaring and then cackling exhausts as they entered turns.  To say it’s a rolling car show is an understatement.  We were lucky enough to find a parking spot for an hour or so right by the diner and walked around to see all of the cars and meet a few folks out enjoying the amazing weather on the first weekend.

Sunday night, I swapped parking spots and moved my 330d back into commuter duty, already >1,500km and want to make sure I’m able to enjoy the remaining kms doing fun weekend outings!

Link to my youtube where I uploaded the first 3 laps, ignore the commentary, I’m sure it was mainly jibberish as I was geeked out and trying to concentrate on driving.
