Germs.

What a week.  Just when Lily starts to feel a little better, I took a hit.  I wasn’t deathly ill, but I felt like something was attacking my body, and my body was using every last ounce of energy I had to fight it off.  Didn’t help that my energy levels were low from being woken up throughout the past several nights by a sick little girl.  I left work early on Wednesday and fell asleep as soon as I got home.  I felt a little better on Thursday morning so I got ready for work, but quickly realized I was still pretty sluggish and it was probably best for me to stay home and take it easy.  I actually had a pretty productive day of work at home, and felt much better by the end of the day.

I kept checking Ty’s hands and feet all week to see if he had any spots – never had any (thank goodness).  He continued to go to vacation care, and the one day he stayed home, he spent the afternoon at a friend’s house.  Friday he went to Movie World, and that must have sucked the energy right out of him.  He laid down on the couch as soon as he got home.  As I was driving home from work, he apparently puked.  All over the couch.  My poor little munchkin.  He looked like heck.  No fever, no spots.  But he was down for the count.  Couldn’t even keep down ice chips.

 Dance.

Since Ty wasn’t in charge of picking movies Friday night, we watched Step Up 2.  I love that movie.  Even though the sequels to it all get cheesier from that one on, I still love them.  At the end of the movie, they play a fun song and show clip after clip of people doing amazing dance moves.  I don’t know about you, but I can’t resist the urge to get out of my chair and bust a move.  Lily had been asleep on Em’s lap for a good hour, but as soon as that music came on, she raised up her little arm and rocked out from the couch.  Damn, she’s cute.

Two!

Saturday, 11 July 2015, my little princess turned 2 years old.  I can’t believe she is two already.  She is the most spirited, intelligent, beautiful, silly, determined little girl I know (she takes after her mother).  Since we had a rough week of fighting off nasty germs, we decided we better not infect anyone else and didn’t have a big party.  But it was a great day, nonetheless.  She started her day with fairy bread.

Jay took Lily to swim lessons in Brumby – her first time riding in the ute.

We had to go pick up her birthday cake, and Ty seemed to be feeling much better, so we ran to the shops.  We picked up a few things (including these adorable little pink boots), got the cake, and headed home.

Lily has been obsessed with listening to “The Monster at the End of This Book” on the IPad. She loves it.  She can navigate through it all in her own – turning pages, talking along with it, breaking down brick walls and boards.  At the end, it is just lovable, furry, old Grover.  Jay had the baker make Lily an adorable Grover birthday cake.  It was perfect!  Lily was so excited when she saw it.  She couldn’t resist touching it, so she instantly was covered in blue frosting.  She opened up all of her presents and we all got a sugar rush from a piece of cake.

After lunch we ran down and had a quick chat with Rae and Gary, while Jay packed up the boat.  We decided that there wouldn’t be another time in our lives that we could ride our boat to check out the pirate ships from the set of Pirates of the Caribbean, so we better do it.  We piled in the boat in our jeans and long sleeve shirts, and off we went.  We got as far as almost the Broadwater and I noticed the storm clouds rolling in.  Oh Captain my Captain hadn’t checked the forecast.  Sure enough, there was a 40% chance we were going to get soaked in the next half hour, and 100% chance in the next 2 hours.  Well crap.  We decided we better turn the boat around and try to beat the rain, which we did.  Even though we didn’t reach our destination, it was a relaxing hour or so.  Lily fell asleep in the First Mate’s chair and had a good nap.

When we got home, we watched Cinderella – one of Lily’s favorites at the moment.  Earlier in the week she and Auntie Em watched it after playing dress up.  Em had put on some makeup and her princess dress.  Too cute!

None of us were very hungry, so we didn’t feel like having a big meal for dinner.  Jay ran out and picked up Subway sandwiches.  Not a very exciting birthday dinner, but she didn’t mind.  ๐Ÿ™‚  We ended the day with one last off-key rendition of happy birthday.  All in all, despite not really having any big birthday plans, it was a pretty great day.  Happy birthday, Princess.

Owl.

We are lacking the skills of Ann Steward, but we attempted to take some photos of Lily.

I have been taking pictures of her with her owl every month for the first year, and I have now switched to annual pictures.  It is fun to see how much she has grown!

Pirates.

The rain messed up our plans to see the set of the Pirates of the Caribbean yesterday, but Sunday was clear.  We didn’t have time to take the boat down, but we decided to stop by The Spit on our way to take Jay to the airport.  We didn’t have to walk far down the beach before we saw the set.  So cool!!!  I can’t wait to see the movie now – but I think it is still a year or more from being finished.  I really should have been a Hollywood actress.  I would have loved to play on that ship.  Or help build it.  If anyone in the biz needs someone dramatic who is good at memorizing lines – perhaps in a motherly role – I’m your gal.  :).

 Airport.

It was almost lunchtime and the kids were starving, so we headed down the coast.  On the way, Ty said he was so hungry about 50 times, and asked why we were driving past so many restaurants.  He was getting so frustrated.  He said, “Dad, I think you need to start learning.  I am hungry.”  And he wasn’t kidding because when we got to California Tacos, he ate most of the bean dip, his entire chicken taco, and half of Lily’s fries.  I guess he is feeling better!!  We dropped off Jay at the airport.  He is headed to Melbourne a couple days earlier than us.  I am hoping that he figures out how to turn the furnace on down there.  There is an Anarctic Vortex making its way across Australia.  Should be pleasant…

Pirates.

When we got home, we decided that since Emily is 30 years old and has never seen Pirates of the Caribbean, we best be plopping ourselves down in the couch and show her what she has been missing.  “Is this scary?”  “My heart is racing – this is too intense.”   “This is why I can’t watch movies like this!!”  Em, it’s a Disney movie.  Just breathe.  She loved it.  ๐Ÿ™‚

School.

Term 3 started on Monday.  Ty was excited to go see his friends and show them his new shoes (without Velcro).  Saige and Grayer came over for a play after school.  It’s so cute how good of friends Saige and Lily have become.

Flight.

Tuesday morning I am going to work from home before picking up Ty at lunch to fly to Melbourne.  This is the first flight without Jay.  And the first flight where Lily has to have her own seat.  We will be taking advantage of the Jetstar iPad hire…  The next blog post will be about our road trip across southern Australia.  G’day mates!

Nanny Cam.

Busy week for Em and the kids.  Lily insists on drinking out of a big girl cup, just like her brother.

Isn’t she cute?  That’s an Ironman tattoo on her bulging biceps.

Em and Lily went to Saige’s house early in the week, and then on Thursday the kids invited Saigey-pops, Grayer, and Harry over for a play.

   OCD.

It appears as though my OCD has been genetically transferred to my offspring.  Sorry mate…

 Arm.

Jay and I were talking to his parents one morning on the drive to work.  His mom expressed concern over what appeared to be a bug bite on Lily’s arm from Fiji.  Neither Jay nor I knew what she was talking about, but she insisted that we check it out.  Here is the photo that had her worried, which turned out to just be a scrape.

So as soon as Jay got to work, he called Em and told her to take a picture of Lily and post it on Facebook with the caption “I sure wish we would have paid more attention to that bug bite on Lily’s arm.”  So funny!!

 Tie!!

We have tried before to teach Ty how to tie his shoes, but his dexterity must not have been developed enough.  This week Emily showed Ty about 10 times how to tie his shoelaces and by golly, he got it!!  So proud of you Ty!

   Grand Final!

Wednesday night I played in our netball Grand Final.  We were up against the youngest team, who had previously destroyed us.  We came in with the right attitude, and I think they thought it would be a piece of cake.    We were mentally prepared and they were not – I guess something that comes with age.  We were able to hang with them the entire game, taking the lead from time to time.  They pretty much panicked.  The Wing Defense that I was playing against was huffing and puffing and she said “I’m out of shape.”  I looked at her and laughed, for real laughed, and said, “oh honey, what are you?  Like 16?”  To which she replied, “No, I’m 14.”  I told her that I’ve got more than 20 years on her…  Anyhoo, it was a fantastic game, we all played at our best.  We ended up losing the game by one point, but we were all really proud of our efforts.  I was really looking forward to a netball souvenir in the form of a medal.  Or something.  But the runner up prize was a gift card to go out to eat somewhere.  Meh.  Don’t get me wrong, I am looking forward to hanging out with the girls off the court, but was really looking forward to the sweetest souvenir ever.  We better win the Grand Final next season – only get to play one more arson before we move back home.  One more shot (no pun intended).  Great game Angels!!

    Fever.

Lily was not herself on Friday, wanting extra cuddles from Em all day.  When she woke from her nap she was burning up, so Jay and I headed home to pick up Ty and make sure Lily was OK.  When the Panadol kicked in she was acting more normal.  She did want extra cuddles throughout the night, but woke up Saturday seeming to be back to normal.  Until she puked at lunch.  And then had a very restless nap.  My gut was telling me something was up so I cancelled our babysitter for the night.  Sunday morning when I went to brush her teeth, her tongue was a mess.  I instantly thought she had Hand Foot and Mouth.  Crap.  I stayed home with her all day while Jay and Ty had a boys day with Brumby.  Lily got progressively worse.  Sunday night was miserable.  Emily got heaps of cuddles on Monday (in between cleaning up puke), and again on Tuesday.  Finally by Tuesday night she was able to eat a bit more.  Wednesday morning she was pretty much back to normal, except for the blisters on her hands and feet.  Such a yucky virus – and there is nothing that the doctors can do for her.  Sleep and cuddles.  Poor little princess.

   Horses.

Emily got to go play with some horses again over the weekend.  And a giant Python.  Ew!!!  She had a great time.  It’s so nice that she has made friends and can get away from time to time.

   4th.

I enjoyed watching all of the 4th of July festivities on Facebook.  We supported our love of the good old USA by dressing in red white and blue for the day.

 Wyoming.

Mom and Brooke are out in Wyoming visiting my brother.  *sigh*. I would love to be there with them.  Mom’s birthday is this week.  She turned 21 again.  I hope she doesn’t get too crazy at the tavern.  Happy birthday mama!!

This weekend is Lily’s 2nd birthday (where did the time go?!?!), Jay flies down to Melbourne on Sunday, and Em and I are hauling the kids to Melbourne on Tuesday.  Hoping that everyone is good and healthy by then.  G’day mates!!

Post Fiji Depression

PFD.

We are all suffering from PFD (Post Fiji Depression).  We spent Sunday detoxing, doing laundry, running errands.  It was a beautiful day so late that afternoon Jay and I took the kids to the park.  Ty did a couple rounds on his bicycle, Lily played on the equipment.  Then we all played a game of basketball.  Lily is getting pretty good at catching and throwing the ball.  Ty attempted about 300 granny shots (made quite a few).  Super fun!  Em had gone over to Rae and Gary’s to tell them all about the trip, and we stopped by after we were finished at the park.  Even though it was detox Sunday, it is nearly impossible to say no to Rae when she offers a glass of red.  Twist my arm.  One turned into 2, and it was a fun, relaxing evening.  Ty played pool with some of their friends’ young boys.  Lily managed to stay out of too much trouble.  We were all pretty tired, so it was early to bed for all of us.

About that PFD…Emily is suffering the worst.

Up for debate, but I think Lily rocks the outfit better than Auntie…

Here is a picture of the crew at 7:00 on Monday night after struggling through the first day back to reality. 3 out of 5 are out cold.  Ty only awake because the TV is on.

Photos.

I finally got around to pulling our vacation pictures off of the good camera.  Here are some pictures of the resort and the 4WD tour to the cave.

                                                                                                       Father’s Day.

Aussies don’t celebrate Fathers Day this weekend (can’t remember when it is), but I am still going to take a moment to talk about Jay.  I have said it before, and I will say it a million more times, he is the perfect father for our children.  He is the favorite parent for both of our kids, for good reason.  He is the fun one, the easy going, the rarely losing his cool one.  He is the one that both kids run to first when we get home from work.  He is the one that the kids call out for.  I can’t tell you how many times Ty has called me “dad”.  I was really hoping to have one of my kids be a mama’s boy/girl, but such is not the case.  It’s ok, he deserves to be the favorite.  I love that they love him so much.  So Jay, happy US Father’s Day!

Most of you probably know that my dad passed away when I was 8.  I’m sure he is fishing, camping, hunting, booking bands, and laughing up in heaven this Father’s Day.  Miss you every day, dad.

I am blessed to have been able to have an awesome stepdad in my life.  Not many 40 year old bachelors would be willing to marry a widow with 4 kids under the age of 11, and then have another kid (my mom is a pretty good catch so I sort of get it).   Steven has taught me so much over the years, has always put us kids before himself, worked himself to the bone to give us a comfortable childhood, was the loudest fan in the stands at our athletic events (DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE!!!), and was always willing to do the dirty work (FAFSA, 4-H record books, lawsuits, driving lessons, the list goes on and on).  Happy Fathers Day, Steven!!  (Sorry for the non-cropped picture – phone was acting up).

Nanny cam.

Lily has been dying to see her best friend, Saigey-pops, so Em and Renata arranged a play date at the park.  Two peas in a pod.  Lily was looking super cute that day and somehow managed to snag a free milkshake from the cafe.

Ty has been going to Vacation Care during the school holidays.  He loves it – they usually have some pretty fun activities planned for the kids.  Thursday’s activity wasn’t really too exciting for Ty, so he stayed home with Em and Lily.  They had a great day – scooter rides, milkshakes, laundry basket rides, and a hair cut.  Ty’s hair was a hot mess, and since he has a hair twirling obsession (which he gets from my side of the family), but doesn’t always use a napkin while eating greasy chicken nuggets, the twirly patch on top of his head was nasty.  So Em took him to the salon to shave it off.  She said that he just sat there and giggled the whole time.  He was excited to look just like Jack Coen.

Emily took this picture of a beautiful rainbow that literally ended in our backyard.  Beautiful!

 Diva.

This week Lily wanted to be in the bathroom with me when I was getting ready for work.  She sat on the counter and did her own little morning routine.  So cute.

 Brother.

My mom is out in Wyoming right now visiting my brother.  I am loving seeing all of the pictures and videos of them.  Rick’s photographer friend, Diana Volk, went up in the mountains with them one day and took more pictures.  She does such a great job!

       Bandit.

Jess went to the farm and took a picture of Bandit begging for a hoof.  Miss that pup so much.  Happy to see that he hasn’t lost his love of all things gross and disgusting.

 Boys.

Jay and Brian decided to have a boys night on Friday.  They rode the train up to the city to go watch the Broncos vs Knights rugby game.  Ty’s description of what he thinks the game was like was priceless – guys in metal suits fighting against wild horses.  Something like that, Ty…  After the game they went to Lefty’s. Brian hadn’t been there before and after about 2 minutes was wondering why he hadn’t gone before.  Such a cool place.  Sounds like they had a really good time.

Party.

Friday afternoon Em and Lily ran into Jo and her kids at the park.  They ended up going over to Jo’s house, then decided they didn’t want the party to end.  Em picked up Ty at school and when I got home from work we hopped in the buggy and went back to their house.  Jo ordered pizza, we drank some wine, and the kids all ran around the house like crazies.  They got dressed up in super hero costumes and put me in handcuffs.  Don’t worry, it didn’t stop me from drinking my wine.  Wait a sec.  None of the so called super heroes helped me get out of the handcuffs.  What’s up with that?  Oh well, it’s a good thing I am Houdini.  They put on a rock concert where they sang us their original song “OH YEAH!!!” about 15 times.  Then the boys started winding down and played the Wii.  Lily fell asleep on my lap.  We were having so much fun, kind of lost track of time.  We ended up leaving at 11:00.  Oops!  So fun!!

            Swim.

Saturday morning we had swim lessons.  Ty didn’t have anyone else in his class, so he had 1-on-1 attention and even though he was tired, he did great.  Lily was fantastic – she got to ring the bell and move up to the next level – B2!!  Yay Lily!  Since both kids did so well, we went to Macca’s for breakfast and a play.  After that we stopped and bought the Star Wars 1, 2, and 3.  You can guess what Ty will want to do the rest of the weekend…  They watched the first one while I went and got a much-needed pedicure.

Netball.

Oh yeah.  Our team is in the Grand Final.  The championship game!  I may be old, but I still have skills on the court.  :). It has been so fun playing ball, learning a new sport, meeting a great group of ladies, getting some exercise (and stress relief).  This week is the Grand Final. Super pumped.  The team we are playing is really good.  Everyone on the team is half our age. Let’s kick some 17 year old booty.  Or at a minimum not keel over and die.  To be continued…

Caravan.

Emily went to Gympie for the weekend.  As you know, she doesn’t know a stranger and makes friends everywhere she goes.  She met this Australian guy Ty out in Wyoming about 5 years ago.  He lives quite a ways north of us, but he told her that his wife and daughter were going to a barrel racing competition in Gympie, which is about 2.5 hours from here.  She called the local caravan park (campground) who just happened to have a camper available for $70 for Saturday night.  Without hesitation (or online research) she said, “I’ll take it!”  Oh boy…  It’s a beaut.  Running water and everything.  She will probably want to ship it home with Brumby.  She’s so low maintenance.  We were in 5 star accommodations 2 weeks ago and 0.5 star last night.  Sounds like she had a great time (and she didn’t get murdered).

       Graziers.

Saturday night we decided to try a new restaurant.  I googled “Kid friendly restaurants on the Gold Coast” and Graziers steakhouse was on a top 10 list.  The online menu looked good and the kids area sounded great – indoor/outdoor.  So we decided to give it a shot.  The kids area was great, but the food was not.  My steak was still bleeding (asked medium well), and it didn’t have much flavor.  They put it back in the grill and gave us free dessert for our trouble, which was really nice. The dessert was pretty good, but I don’t think we will be going back.  Red Rock has amazing steak and is only a buggy ride away.  If only they had a kids area…

Sunday Funday.

Sunday morning we watched Freaky Friday while Jay caught up on sleep from Friday night.  When he woke up we cooked brekky, then did some painting and drawing.  Ty added a few more entries into his Australia journal.  I love seeing what he writes to describe the pictures.  I talked to mom for a bit, and then we decided to go antiquing.  Jay wants to find an old XXXX Beer wooden case to put in the back of Brumby for storage.  I want to find an old surf board as a souvenir.  We drove down to Miami Beach and didn’t have any luck at the first antique store.  We went to Hard Rock Surfers Paradise for lunch, shopped a bit, played on the beach, and then headed to the next store.  No luck at Runaway Bay, so we tried Sanctuary Cove.  The kids played in the park while I ran through the shops.  No luck, nothing, ok I will stop at my favorite clothing store, but a pair of pants and wallah!!!!!  There is the perfect wooden box for Jay!!  And then I found this pillow that, hello, of course had to come home with me.

We got home, and the kids were excited to see Auntie Em.  Ty and Jay ran to the store, Em and I cooked pizzas.  When the boys got home, they put in the last Star Wars movie.  Another great weekend in the books.

If anyone wants a little get away, a vacation of a lifetime, Qantas is having a sale that ends 30 June.  Come on people!  We are running low on our visitor pipeline.  Roo’s Barefoot Cantina and Resort has lots of available dates.  :). Accommodation rates are great- we only accept payment in the form of Dove chocolate, Cheetos, and Hidden Valley Ranch dressing.

G’day mates!

On Fiji Time

21 Sunday Jun 2015

We just had the best vacation ever.

Puke.

Vacation started off with a bang.  Lily had a little too much yogurt for brekky, so as soon as we headed off down the road, she puked.  All over herself.  We turned the car around, went back home, gave her a sponge bath and new clothes, then off we went again.  Never fails.  She wasn’t showing any other signs of illness, just had an overflowing belly.

Air.

We got to the airport, checked in, grabbed a quick bite to eat, went through international customs, and had just enough time to change Lily’s nappy before boarding our flight.   And take a selfie.

Lily tried to steal Auntie Em’s cheese the whole flight.  Ty slept.  Pretty quick and easy flight – just under 4 hours direct from Gold Coast to Nadi.  Em’s jaw nearly hit the airplane floor when she looked out and saw the islands.  Absolutely breathtaking.

   Taxi.

We landed in Fiji, 30 degrees Celsius, got our bags, went through customs, and were greeted by a Fijian band.  Instantly fell in love with Fiji.

We found our driver to take us to the resort.  He was really nice and offered to let us stop at the grocery store before going to the resort.  He even helped carry our bags.  And then we began the hour (ish) drive to the resort.  The ride was interesting, definitely differently than driving around the Gold Coast.  There were cows with ropes around their necks wandering around everywhere.  People just appeared from nowhere on the side of the road, waiting for a taxi or bus, most without any shoes on their feet. Sugar cane was growing tall.  Just about every driveway/end of road had a little fruit stand, many with an entire family sitting next to it waiting to sell their produce.  The houses were very much “open concept”, no glass or screen windows, tin roofs.  For Emily, who has never left the U.S., and barely left Iowa where poverty isn’t evident, it was eye opening.

The road to get to the resort was quite curvy, lots of speeding up and slowing down, and Ty had insisted on sitting in the back of the van with dad, but thankfully he made it without any drama.

When we arrived at the resort – The Outrigger – we were greeted by a bunch of Fijians shouting “BULA!!!”  Bula is Fijian for hello.  What a beautiful place.  The lobby area overlooks the resort, with the ocean as a backdrop.  Wow.

A lovely older gentleman brought us a cold towel that smelled like mint to wipe our hands and face, and he gave us each a yummy glass of sweet tea (I think) to drink.  We got checked in and headed to our room.  We were standing outside our room waiting for Ty to put the key in the lock when the grocery bag that Em was holding did that thing that you only see in movies.  The bottom completely ripped open, sending our glass jars of salsa and olives with nowhere to go but down to the concrete floor.  They didn’t stand a chance, and I ended up with salsa and broken glass on my toes.  That was when I realized that Ty didn’t have his shoes on.  Initially my concern was about his feet and the broken glass.  Secondly my concern was about the fact that Ty’s flip flops were in the taxi that just dropped us off.  We tried to track them down, but I am now considering this a donation to some beautiful little Fijian child.  Guess we will be shopping for shoes for Ty.

Dinner.

We dropped off our bags, found Ty’s only other pair of sandals, and went for a walk around the resort.  By this time it was dark, but so beautiful.  A stream runs alongside the entire Palm-leaf-covered walkway to the restaurants, bars, pool and beach.  The pool is huge.  It is surrounded by a few different places to eat.  We chose to eat at the buffet – quick and easy.  And Emily particularly loved the fact that we had to walk between these two lads to get inside the restaurant.

We tried a whole bunch of new things, I can’t even remember what they were all called, most pretty tasty.  Ty was getting antsy, so we told him to go sit next to the group of Fijian men sitting on the rug playing their guitars and singing.  He was a little hesitant at first but when they handed him his own little guitar, he was sold.  He sat with them until the band stopped playing, letting other kids have a go in the guitar.  Lily got jealous and had to join in the fun – Ty watched over her carefully.

     Dancing.

After the band stopped playing, a group of Fijian dancers performed several songs and dances.  So cool!  Ty, Lily and Auntie took front row seats and soaked it all in.  It didn’t take long before Lily started moving her hands around like the Fijian ladies.

           Pool.

The first morning in Fiji.  Sigh.  As we were getting ready, the kids were sitting on the balcony shouting “BULA!!” To everyone that walked by.  Adorable.  The best was that everyone shouted BULA!!  back at them.

We walked down to the restaurants in the morning and it was fun to see how it actually looked in the daylight.  So beautiful.

Em and I had brekkie at the buffet, but the kids couldn’t wait to jump in the pool.  Jay watched the kids while Em and I stuffed our faces with yummy deliciousness.  I am likely not going to fit into any of my pants when we get back.  As Em says, “if they don’t like it, don’t look.”

Once our bellies were hanging over the top of our bikini bottoms, we joined Jay and the kids by the pool.  First on Em’s to do list was to get a flower for her hair.  For the next 7 days, Em was rarely spotted without a flower in her hair, and if she realized that she was out in public without one…she might as well have been walking around without any pants – the sheer panic on her face when she said “I forgot my flower!!!!!”

The Kids Club had a great little park that the kids loved to play on.

Jay and I took Lily over to the tour desk to figure out what we are going to do all week.  After chasing Lily around forever, we took the information and went back to the pool to get Em’s input.  I couldn’t relax until we made a decision, so off I went to book our trip.  And then it was game on.  Relaxation central.  It misted all day.  all. Day.  But we didn’t care.  We were the fools by the pool.  We were all wrapped up in blankets.  Er. I mean. Beach towels.  Lily slept on my lap.  Ty cuddled with dad.  We had cocktails and a beer tower of Fiji Gold.  Rough day.

Oh Emmy.  (I think I said that a thousand times throughout the week).  Jay and I took the kids down to the beach.  Em held down the fort by the pool.  We were gone maybe a half hour.  When we came back, Em was laughing, all goo-goo eyes.  “You will never guess what just happened.” She squealed.  Right, I wil never guess.  “You have a date.”  YES!!  The young lad, Tupeni, who she had been eyeing all day stopped over to have a chat.  Turns out the flower in the left side of her hair tells the boys that she is single.  Let me tell you, they noticed.

More pool.

It was still raining.  And we were still sitting by the pool.  It was wet.  Sort of cold.  We were nearly the last ones standing, but a crazy family from Melbourne had to show us up.  The dad was jumping off of the edge of the pool into a boogie board.  So of course Jay had to give it a go.

After a few good belly laughs, it was time to head to the hotel for a hot shower.  Em, bless her heart, said she would stay home with the kids so Jay and I could go to dinner.  They had a fun little slumber party.

We made reservations at Ivi, an adults only restaurant.  It was a bit stuffy – only a few other couples and so quiet. Just a guy and a guitar to help with the silence.  Jay and I had an amazing meal, and somehow Jay talked me into getting up and dancing (even though nobody else was going to).  Such a yummy dinner!!  It was so nice to have dinner with my hubby.

I was ready to call it a night but Em was still awake and ready to go out.  Well crap.  Jay had already put on his comfy clothes, so I (twist my arm) had to go out with her.  It was pretty quiet, not a lot happening, so she just had one drink.  I think that Emily has said “I love Fiji” about a thousand times by now.

Monday.

Monday morning Em wanted buffet brekkie but Jay and I were still stuffed from the previous night’s dinner.  Unfortunately the weather was even worse on Monday, so they switched to a wet weather program at the resort.  Somehow we didn’t seem to care about the rain (at first) and ended up down at the beach.  There were 2 small ponies and their babies wandering down the beach.  We gave them a little pat.  Ty found a bright blue starfish.  Awesome.

After I got sick of being out in the rain, we found some cover at the poolside restaurant. The kids didn’t mind the rain so they played in the pool.   We ate lunch – Lily loved the fettuccini…

Just when I had dried off, we heard the pool activities director announce that a handstand competition was about to start.  I used to be pretty good at underwater handstands, and the peer pressure was intense, so I thought I would give it a go.  A free river tour was on the line.  I was up against 2 Australian dudes, so my chances of winning were slim to none.  The water was freezing, and deeper than what I used to do handstands in at Auntie Shell’s pool, so I did pretty terrible.  Really bad.  As soon as I got upside down, water went up my nose and I panicked.  Not awesome.  I lasted approximately 4 seconds.  It’s a good thing that arm took this really great and super slimming picture of me before I attempted the handstand because she didn’t have enough time to snap a photo during my handstand.

I even tried a second time and came up before the two guys came up for air.  Pathetic.  Jess would have done a much better job.  She should have been here with us.  Despite my really awful attempt, since I was the only female to give it a try, I got a free cocktail.  That was better than a river tour anyway.  :).

Meimei.

We had a quick lunch by the pool and it was time to take the kids to meet their nanny.  Yes, I am fully aware that we brought our nanny on vacation with us, but she needed a vacation, so we had to hire another nanny.  :). The nannies – or meimeis (pronounced may-may) have a fantastic reputation.  Jay and I took the kids to the Kids Club and met Diema, a lovely older lady.  We gave her the 5 minute lowdown on our children and she sent us on our way.  The kids didn’t shed a tear.  Lily was snuggled up in Diema’s arms and Ty was playing with toys.  We were free!!!

Bebe.

We grabbed our things and went to the adult pool, which was lovely but pretty quiet.  We had one drink – a Fiji rum and diet that is otherwise referred to as hammered in a glass.

Then it was time for Em and I to head to the Bebe Spa.  A golf buggy drove us up the hill behind the resort to a beautiful building with unbelievable views.  There was a wedding in the chapel next to the spa lobby, so we were able to watch the guests and groomsmen arrive.  We didn’t get to see the bride because our masseuses came and took us away.  Em and I had hot stone massages with a mini facial.  It was very different than Ania’s style, much more fast paced, but it felt great.

After our massages we got cleaned up and met Jay at the restaurant above the spa, which had even more amazing views.  We had some appetizers and a glass of wine.  It was too cloudy to see a good sunset, but it was still beautiful.  We had a lovely chat with Vara, who also goes by Francis, who has worked at the resort for a few years. She knows Diema and said she is great. A grandma, which is perfect for my kiddos who have been grandma-less for two years.  Gave me peace of mind that the kids were in good hands.

Sundowner.

We went back to the room to get cleaned up for dinner.  Diema and the kids came to the room, and they were so happy.  They had a really fun day.  They spent most of the day inside, and Ty chose to stay with Lily instead of going to kids club activities.  Such a sweet big brother.  When the rain stopped, they went down to the beach to look for seashells. The seas were a bit rough so they didn’t stay long.  They found a few shells and took them back to the kids club to paint them.

When it was time for us to go to dinner, Ty just said “have fun” and Lily had a teensy tiny moment that was quickly forgotten when Diema picked her up.  Dinner was yummy.  I am already overloaded with too much good food.  I should probably switch to fruit and salads…probably.

Crabs.

Jay went back to the room to relieve Diema, and Em made me go to the bar with her.  On our way, we stopped to watch the crab races.  We didn’t have any cash so we couldn’t bid on a crab, which was just as well because the USA crab didn’t win.

10.

We went to the bar and soon Emily had the entire bar staff flirting with her. She loves Fiji. I was thoroughly entertained by the evening. One of the guys wrote down the numbers one to ten on a coaster for me, and we spent the next half hour trying to memorize it. Well, I tried to memorize. Em couldn’t get past pronunciation, which was hilarious and all of the staff were laughing. So fun!  They let us go behind the bar to get a picture.  You can see how they all felt about little miss Emily.

   Tuesday.
Yeah, I think that is what day it is. You know it is a good vacation when you have completely lost track of time.  We started the day off with some beach time.  Jay and Ty went for a kayak ride.  Em and the boys went for a snorkel while I looked after Lily’s chunky thunder thighs.   Ty learned how to fish with a hand line – didn’t catch anything but had fun trying.

She was content throwing seashells into the water.  I hadn’t planned on going into the water, but after everyone came out saying how awesome it was, I figured I better have a go.  Ty said he saw 181 fish.  I think he was right.  The water wasn’t more than waist deep most of the way out, with heaps of live coral and so many beautiful fish swimming around.  It was amazing.  I wasn’t expecting there to be so many fish to look at.  And so different!  Love. This. Place.

The sun was shining (hooray!) so we camped out poolside.  Lily absolutely loves the water.

Ty was not wanting to get his face wet because we didn’t have his goggles, but he ventured out a bit.  Em and I did water aerobics, Em played water volleyball, and then just after lunch it was time to take the kids to Diema.  Ty put his arm around Lily’s shoulders and led the way to the kids club.  So sweet.  And then it was time for relaxation.  Em and I got some braids in our hair while we watched other people’s kids play in the pool.  No worries.  We ventured over to the adult pool where Emily’s dream of drinking a cocktail out of a coconut came true.  No, this drink is not on the menu.  No, it is not a problem.

We met another couple from the U.S. I think we were the only Americans at the resort.  We laughed at his recap of the first time he got behind the wheel here – similar to Australia.  Good fun.  I may or may not have fallen asleep by the pool, while Jay and Emily drank Fijian iced teas.  Let me tell you, the Fijians are way tougher than Long Islanders.  That red rum….

We headed over to the arena for the evening’s entertainment.  Fire walking.  Whoa.  Those dudes have tough feet.

We had dinner at the poolside bar, where Luke couldn’t be outdone on the coconut drink.

Time to call it a night.  Despite having eaten the entire snack bag that I had packed, Ty was still hungry, so he got to order room service.  He showed us his awesome new Fijian dance.

        Cave.

In Wednesday morning, we took a half day tour to a sacred cave in one of the villages in the Fijian countryside.  We took a jet boat across the river, climbed into a 4WD buggy, and drove about a half hour in the main highway on that side of the river (dirt road).  The countryside was beautiful.  Lush green plants, marble mountains, fields full of fruits and vegetables, more random cows and horses, and the most beautiful little children.  They knew we were coming and stood by the jeep to get lollies from us – thankfully we came prepared.  Everyone that we passed by shouted out “BULA!!” with the biggest smiles.  The people in the villages don’t have much in the way of material items, but they are rich with happiness.  What an experience.

We picked up a priest along the way, arrived at the entrance to the cave, and had to get permission from the chief before being allowed to go inside the cave.  The ladies had to wear a sarong, everyone had to remove our shoes before entering the home.  The men sat in the front, facing the priests, women and children in the back.  After gaining permission, we had a cava ceremony. Cava is a drink that is made by crushing some special roots and mixing it with water.  We all had to try it.  I thought it tasted disgusting, but drank it and smiled so as not to offend anyone.

We then walked down a path, passed by several banana trees (with actual bananas growing!!!), and found the cave entrance.  Once inside, we all had to hunch down, walk through water up to our knees, to get to the other side.  I was a little anxious about it, but had to swallow my panic so that Ty wouldn’t freak out.  Both he and Lily did awesome.  Turns out that part was Ty’s favorite part.  The cave was huge, tall and long with several different rooms.  I had a hard time hearing some of the stories, but what I did pick up was shocking.  Four hundred Fijians lived in the cave for 2 moth when the island was under attack.  This was during the (ew!!) cannibalism period of Fiji’s history, so the enemies that were captured were killed and cooked in a natural oven inside the cave.  Not exactly a pleasant thought.  Thankfully Ty did not seem to hear any of the stories so I didn’t have to try to explain that one to him.  Yikes.  The tour lasted about a half hour and was really interesting.  Somewhere along the way, Jay blew out his flip flop, so he had to finish the tour with one flip on and one flip off. We had a nice lunch back at the chief’s home, with chickens and dogs hunting for our scraps.  Lily loved the animals from afar but freaked out when they came close.  After lunch we got back in our buggies for the ride back down the hill.  About halfway down it started raining, so none of the village children came out to collect more lollies.  When we got to the bottom, they had us climb onto the floating “ferry” that was a very homemade contraption that looked like something Steven and Rick would build.  Then 2 guys used really long bamboo poles to push us across the river.  What the heck?!?!  It was definitely an interesting and unexpected ride back to the other shore.  Hilarious and awesome.  The water was only knee deep so we could have all just walked across, but it was much more entertaining with that form of transportation.

Evening.

We got back to the hotel, took showers, started a load of laundry, and went down to the restaurants to feed the children.  It was still raining, so our options for activities were limited.  At 6:00 we checked Ty into the kids club.  We came back at 6:30 to watch the Fijian dress-up parade, which was awesome.  We must not leave here without grass skirts for both of my children.

Em, Jay, Lily and I went to dinner, where Lily fell asleep pretty quickly.  Let’s talk about dinner.  This place has the most amazing food.  I haven’t had food this good in 2 years.  And the service is outstanding.  At this point in the week half of the staff knows all of our names.  This is what makes it 5 star.  Emily has bought into it hook, line, and sinker.  We might have a hard time getting her on the airplane out of here.

After dinner, we checked in on Ty to see if he was ready to go back to the room.  He chose to stay longer, so we brought Lily up to the room.  Jay brought Ty back at 9:00, then met Em at the at to watch the State of Origin game.  She convinced Jay to put a flower in his hair.  Sounds like they had another fun night!

  Rain.

Thursday we woke up and weird…it was rainy and windy.  Again.  I am about at my limit for wet and colder weather.  I want to sit by the pool and be hot.  And only get wet when I choose to jump in the pool.  Such is not the case, though.  We are trying to make the most of it.  Running out of rainy day activities for the adults.  Em and I did some modeling at the beach – you know, trying to capture that wind blown look…

Lily was soaking wet and her hair was blowing everywhere, but she was still finding sea shells.  Ty enjoyed the morning kids club session, and then we all ate lunch before taking the kids to see Diema.  She has the day off on Friday, so when we met her on Thursday she had a little gift for each of the kids – a necklace and bracelet for Lily and a carved wooden mask for Ty.  So sweet!

 Sigatoka.

Once the kids were happily settled in with Diema, we caught the city bus and went into the nearby town of Sigatoka.  We wandered around the shops and the outdoor markets.

As we were crossing the street I thought I heard someone shout “Emily!”  I thought there is no way someone in town knows Emily, but sure enough, 2 of the staff from the hotel were there – Maggie and Michael.  They walked us around to some of the shops, and laughed at Em’s hat selection.

I found an adorable little wooden fish bowl/plate, and Emily bought a neck-breaker (for real, that is what it is called – yikes!).  We bought some t-shirts and hats and caught a bus back to the resort.

Hair.

Em and I couldn’t resist the little hair salon shop that said “scalp massage” any longer.  We drank a glass of wine and were soon thoroughly relaxed.  Jay found relaxation at the swim up bar.  :).

Mexican.

The theme at the buffet was Mexican, and oh my, was it good.  We stuffed ourselves full – ate way too much.  We went to the lounge for one drink and chatted about cava.  The picture below is what the root looks like after they ground it up, before they mix it with water.  All I wanted to do after was sleep, so we called it an early night and went to bed.

   Friday.

We woke up and went to the beach.  It was a little cool so I didn’t brave the water, but everyone else went for one last snorkel.  Then we set up camp near the pool, next to Luke and Sandy.  Sandy has been coming here every 6 months for over 30 years.  Her son, Luke, has pretty much grown up with the staff at the hotel.  They were so much fun – kept Em thoroughly entertained all week.   Somehow Em didn’t get a picture with Sandy, so they will have to come to the Gold Coast before we move back to the U.S.

Lily got to go spend the day with the new nanny, Elenoi, but Ty wasn’t up for it.  He preferred to spend the day with the adults.  He was pretty worn out and ended up taking a 2 hour nap by the pool.  Em and I played against each other in the sand volleyball match (my team won, of course), then Em ran off with Luke, a bunch of guests and staff to watch the Outrigger rugby game.  The hotel sponsors a team, and several of the guys that have become friends during the week play.  She and Luke rode the bus to town with about 75 people (really only holds 40).  She has never been to a rugby game, what an experience!  The Outrigger team won!

               Shoes.

Emily loved watching the game, but could not stop thinking about the fact that the guys didn’t have enough shoes to play, and many didn’t have the right size.  Things that we take for granted, like a decent pair of shoes, are a luxury for many of the Fijians.  I was battling guilt all week as we were living in a luxurious escape from reality that was only made possible by the beautiful people that work at the resort and live a life far from luxurious.  But they are so happy.  So happy.  There was never a moment when I thought that they wanted anything from me – other than a smile and a laugh.  If anyone is looking for a place to donate money/clothing/shoes, any of the Fijian village churches, schools, or orphanages are in need and would be forever grateful.  Many of the children only get one meal a day – lunch at school – which costs about $1 FJD per child, which is about $0.50 USD.  It has been a very eye opening week.

Tears.

Friday night was our last dinner at the resort.  Ty promised that he would behave like an adult so that he could join us.  Em was still at the game, so it was a special dinner for Jay, Ty and I.  We had a yummy Italian buffet, complete with candles lit for a true Italian feel.  Ty accidentally nearly knocked the candle into my lap, as he was learning about the science of wax.  Thankfully Jay saved my life.  And then the couple that has been playing guitar everywhere around the resort came over to our table to sing us their farewell song.  The evening staff joined in, and before I knew it, I had tears stinging my eyes.  I tried to keep them in, but when they told the story of the song, how it means that they hope we have enjoyed our time, consider them friends, sincerely hope we come back, and have a safe journey home, I was done for.  Couldn’t hold back the tears.  I don’t think I have ever actually cried when leaving vacation.

After dinner I stayed back to wait for Emily and had a fun chat with a couple from Melbourne until Em got back.  Then Em, Luke and Jasyn showed up for more laughs.  Off to bed for me.

 Saturday.

Ugh.  The day of departure.  We packed up our things and went down for brekky.  Ty decided that he wanted the seat with the best view.  One of Em’s new best friends, Tupeni, asked the guitar players to come do the serenade send-off for Emily.  I wanted to leave – no time for more tears, but Em made me stay.  We were both sitting there tapping our feet, fanning our faces, trying to hold them back.  No such luck.  Gosh, I love this place.

We went to the Eco Park per Ty’s request, which was just a short walk from the resort, past a few cows.  Ty and Lily both held a lizard and then wrapped a disgusting snake around their shoulders.  Eww!!

The park wasn’t very big, and mostly had a few birds and a tropical fish tank, so it didn’t take long to walk through.   I was fascinated by the fruit bats – just like the ones that fly over our house every night.  I hadn’t seen them up close before.  Nasty.

We went back to the hotel, had lunch, said a few more goodbyes, and went to the lobby to check out.

Paid the bill (yikes!!!!!) and promised to eat Ramen noodles for a month to make up for the expense.  Luke, Sandy and Russell, the manager, came up to see us off.  They gave Ty and Lily new ankle bracelets – so sweet!  I don’t think either kid will take them off. Ever.

The car service company must have been short a van, because they drove us to the airport in a full size bus.  No joke.  All to ourselves.  They cranked up the music, threw our luggage on the back seats, and gave us a nice tour during the ride back to Nadi.

Both kids slept – Em and I did as well.  After we got checked in, the kids played at a Lego table for a bit, and then we sat in a room with no windows for over an hour until our flight arrived.  The airport is under construction, so hopefully there are plans to put some windows in.  Felt like a holding cell.  Ty was entertained by the iPad, Emily slept like an old man, and Jay and I took turns going for walks with Lily.

 Vinaka.

All good things must come to an end, I suppose, but it really sucks to be leaving this beautiful country, amazing people, rich culture.  This has been an unforgettable experience.  Best vacation ever.  As they say in Fiji, vinaka.  Thank you.

Goodbye.
Emily experienced her first goodbye down under on Monday, as Sue, Lynsey, and Kaden caught an early flight to Sydney. I could see her getting choked up as we pulled out of the driveway. It’s such a strange feeling as most people that come here on vacation want to stay forever, and have a hard time understanding why we feel so sad when our friends and family have to go back to the “real world”. I think having people leave to go back home makes us miss the comforts of home. But it usually just takes a day or so before we get back on track and appreciate what Australia has to offer. I didn’t know Emily’s friends before they came here, but they were such a sweet family, and I am so glad that we were able to help make their trip to Australia happen. Sue said she has never really left the farm, never flown. Go big or go home. :). Kaden was such a good boy – jet lag and all. And Lynsey took more pictures in 6 days than I have in 2 years. :). Thank you for arriving just in time to help Em get over her first Little Dipper, for forcing her to stretch herself and venture out further down the M1, for being a “grandma Sue” to Lily, and for including both of my children on several of your outings.  They came as strangers and left as mates.  Here are a few more pictures from their adventures.

Kaden wore this costume for 3 days straight. Including sleeping.

Nanny Cam.

This week Em had some friends over to the house for a play date. Lily and Sage are best mates – 2 peas in a pod.

You can never do too much to protect yourself from the Aussie sun.

Speaking of the Aussie sun, what is Lily going to do when we move back home and she doesn’t have 365 days of sunshine and this view to admire?

Getting fizzy.

Rough day… This is what the girls do when they are waiting on a tradie.

Daddy Boat Lights.

Em and I took the kids to the marina to pick up a movie and pick up a few groceries.  I entertained the kids while Em went to the store.  Lily and I were sitting on the bench chatting about the boats.  I asked which was her favorite and she pointed to one in the front with some fun lights around it.  She said “daddy boat lights.”  I told her that she should tell dad when we get home that she wants him to put lights on the boat.  A half hour later, we walked in the door and she ran up to Jay and said, “daddy boat lights.”  Em and I looked at each other, jaws dropped.  Wow.  Three days later, Em and Liky went to the store.  When Em was putting the groceries in the buggy, she looked up and spotted Lily in the bench looking at the boats.  Em went up to her, Lily pointed and said, “Daddy boat lights.”  Jay better pick up some lights…

 Run Ty Run!

Ty had his first school sports competition. They had a Prep to Year 3 cross country carnival, which they called a “fun run”. Yes, everyone got ribbons (actually a piece of paper but for effect I am going to refer to them as ribbons). I suppose I am OK with that, as 600 meters is quite a long way for little 5 and 6 year old legs to run. The one little boy who nearly puked just before the finish line but held it in certainly deserved a ribbon for showing extreme control over his gag reflexes. And if they didn’t give ribbons to everyone, then Ty wouldn’t have received one. However, if they had run a 100 meter race, Ty would have won first place. I was giving him a pep talk that morning and I told him not to get caught in the adrenaline rush at the start of the race, but he must not have been paying much attention. He did hear me talk about Aunt Jekka getting to run in the statewide competition for the 100 meter hurdles. He said, “but what happens if you step on the turtles? Won’t you break their shell?” Kids say the darnedest things! So I showed him a couple videos of people running hurdles sprints. Maybe that is why he blew everyone away at the start of the race. Or maybe it was because he dressed like a ninja turtle that morning. Or maybe it was from rocking out to TNT the whole way to school – I am dynamite. Whatever it was, he took off like a shot. And then he crashed. Yes, if you are wondering if he walked, the answer is yes. And my competitive spirit was shouting “run Ty run!!” He walked a bit, let half the kids go past, and then got a burst of energy and went off on his second 100 meter dash. His timing was terrible, though, because he was tuckered out near the finish line, and he actually walked to the finish. Oh boy. We have some work to do, but he did show hints of greatness. Just need to polish that little diamond in the rough. One of his mates, Harry, won the race easily. He could have just kept on going. I think he is going to be a little star. Great job to all of the kids who gave it a go! While Ty’s team (the red team) – the Greasley house – was the favorite, the yellow team took home the trophy.

Cooly.

Saturday was a big day. After swim lessons (Lily got a new swim cap),we took Brumby out to his first car show. The old ute was finally road ready. Ty and Jay followed behind us girls, so Em got some good selfies of Brumby’s maiden voyage down the M1. After looking for a parking spot for an hour and a half, we both finally found spots. We saw some cool cars, and the girls got to do some shopping. I was looking for the perfect Australian 1950’s dress to wear to car shows back home – no luck yet.

        Queen.
The queen’s birthday was on Monday so we got the day off. I did some work while Em and Jay washed cars and ironed clothes.  And then we cleaned the fish tank.  For an hour.  For the love of God, how can one tiny little fish make such a mess?  And where are Jess and Jason when I need them to clean the nasty tank?  The tank looks better today than it did on day 1.  Ty picked out a new addition to the Great Barrier Reef.  I don’t think Nemo and Doodie are big fans.

We did a little shopping and then went to the park with Ty’s bicycle – minus the training wheels. Jay and I got a good workout, and Ty did great. It will take a few more attempts before he is totally comfortable, but I think he did a great job.  There may or may not have been a bribe of candy involved in this activity…  I think Jay was more nervous than Ty.  Apparently his first real bike ride was traumatic.  Would love to hear Kirk ad Sherry’s version of the story…

Laundry Room.

The laundry room is where we send the kids for a time out when they have been naughty.  Sometimes I send myself there.  Not necessarily because I haven’t been a good girl, but because I need to sneak away to eat an ice cream bar.  So I guess that does make me naughty…  There is also a fridge full of beer.  I love the laundry room.

 Fiji.
We leave paradise for another paradise on Saturday, as we are flying to Fiji. I. Can’t. Wait. Going to (try to) unplug and relax.  Might be a while before you hear an update.  We don’t really have any plans – will see where the adventure takes us!

G’day mates!

I love surprises that go off without a hitch.  I have been planning a surprise birthday party for Emily’s 30th for over a month now.  I told her I had lined up a babysitter and we were going to to the marina with a few friends for dinner, and then just hang out at the tavern for the rest of the evening.  She was OK with the plan but did mention on a couple occasions that it would be fun to go into the city to Leftys Old Time Music Hall.  I said that with Jay away, I didn’t want to venture out on the trains by myself, would be too much since we have the kids to take care of without Jay the next day, blah blah blah.  So we decided we would just get overly dressed up for an evening at the tavern.  We met Katie and Jo for dinner, and Ania showed up a bit later.  Dinner was lovely, but Prince Charming (aka Larry) called at 8:00 to let us know that the chariot awaits.  It was raining a bit, so we were all huddled up under our jackets, following Em as we made our way to the tavern.  Her reaction was priceless when she realized a) hey that is the Cinderella limo we saw that one night at netball and b) holy crap that is here for US!!!!!!  There was lots of screaming and laughing and “oh my god!!!!”.  Classic.  We waved so long to the tavern – see you next time – and off we went.  Em was in a state of shock.  We opened our complimentary bottle of bubbly and laughed and drank champagne and ate Lindt chocolates all the way to Leftys.  Did she really think I was going to take her to the tavern for her 30th birthday?!?!  Our driver, Larry, was so adorable.  Talk about riding in style!  The car attracted quite a lot of attention on the drive in.  It was so fun to see people’s reactions to it.

Once inside Leftys, the dancing began, and it didn’t stop until we left at half past midnight.  The people watching was fantastic.  Leftys draws in such an eclectic mix of people.  Old, young, lots of beards, all drawn together by live music that you can’t resist the urge to dance to – and play air guitar.  I tried a new drink, as suggested by an Aussie gal sitting at the bar.  I thought she called it a Sayla and Diet.  Turns out it was a Sailor Jerry and diet, which is like Captain Morgan.  Darn “R” sound – gets me every time.  It was a great suggestion – yummy!  Some of the most memorable people of the night were the old man at the front of the dance floor, the tall drink of water that really needed to drink a tall glass of water (or 10), the Keanu Reeves look alike bartender, the Fred Hoiberg look alike and his Hawaiian shirt mates, and last but not least, the poor bloke that fell in love with Ania at first sight who looked like a lost puppy as he watched us get into the limo and she gave a little princess wave – “all the best”.  Sorry mate, this carriage is for ladies only.  I haven’t laughed that much in I don’t know how long.  Thanks to Jo, Katie, and Ania for making Em’s 30th birthday perfect!!

Highly recommend GCLuxCars.com for anyone looking for an extra special night out!!

As much fun as Saturday was, Sunday was the opposite.  Em and I were struggling.  Not so much from the booze (for me anyway), but from lack of sleep.  I went to bed at 2:45 and the kids woke me up at 4:45.  We took turns dozing off.  Needless to say, we didn’t get much accomplished during the day.

The week went on, kind of a blur.  We survived.  And then on Thursday, thank God, Jay came home.  Life could get back to normal again.  I don’t think that Lily wants Jay to go away without her ever again.

Disco.

Ty had his first school dance.  He dressed up for the occasion.  Such a handsome little fella.

Friday night Em and I left Jay in charge of the kids and we went out for a much needed glass of wine.  One turned into a few as we met some super fun people.  The wine bar turned into closing down the tavern.  I’m too old for that.  But, boy, was it fun.

Saturday was go-go-go.  Swim lessons, hair cuts, Costco, birthday party prep.  Who knew preparing for a 5 year old’s birthday party could be so much work.  Ty invited his entire class, and nearly everyone came, plus some other friends.  Em went to the Boat Show with our new friends and was amazed at some of the boats.

Sunday morning Emily picked up her friends Sue, Lynsey, and 4 year old Kaden.  The poor souls arrived in time for the mad rush of the birthday party.  The bouncy house arrived several hours early, so Jay and Ty went to the park to help get it set up.  Then Jay went to pick up the Captain America birthday cake.  We loaded up the buggy and the car with all of the stuff and got everything ready.  Kids food and drinks, adult food and drinks, gift bags, balls, and bag chairs.  Instant party.  The first guests started arriving at 2:00 and the fun began.  I don’t know many of the parents because I don’t do pick up and drop offs at school, so I had fun chatting with everyone.  The kids had a blast.  As we were wrapping up at sunset, an awesome pirate ship floated down the canal.  A perfect ending to a perfect day.  When we got home, Ty opened up the way too many presents.  Thank you to everyone who helped make his day so special!!

5.

Hold on.  My baby just turned 5.  In his own words…what the heck?!?!  I remember the day he was born like it was yesterday.  He has packed a lot of life into 5 years.  He is handsome, smart, sweet, determined, and hilarious and awesome.  I love you Ty Bear!

Nanny cam.

While jay and I had to work this week, Em and Lily did all sorts of fun stuff with Sue and Lynsey and Kaden. Snapper Rocks, Currumbin, Movie World, surfers Paradise, Australian Outback Spectacular.

Cowboy.

My brother was helping at a branding and a couple ladies that take amazing pictures asked if they could take some of him.  They turned out awesome!  Makes me miss Wyoming…and my brother.

Bandit.

And then Brooke posted pictures of the farm.  I miss my dog.

Sick.

I think my body is trying to tell me to slow down and rest.  I have been running myself ragged for about a month now, and have not been able to keep away the germs that have been making everyone else sick.  It could be worse, but I have some sort of cold/sinus/sneezing/runny nose yuckiness going on.  Lovely.

Boat.

Saturday morning after swim lessons we went out on the boat.  We went to Jumpin’ Pin so that Ty could test out his new yabby pump from Aunt Brookie.  He caught a ton of yabbies and soldier crabs.  I didn’t take any pictures so Google soldier crab.  The beach was literally crawling with them.  So cool.  We played for a bit on the beach, Lynsey found 10,000 sea shells, we all took a turn on the sand sled I made, and then it was time to head home before the sun set.  The water was like glass – a perfect day at the beach.

Sunday.

We were all going to explore Tambourine Mountain on Sunday, but my cold  needed a rest, and Jay wanted to work on Brumby.  Em took her friends up the mountain, I cleaned and chipped away at Mount Laundry.  I could use about 5 more Sunday’s (back to back).  2 more weeks until Fiji…

G’day mates!

Nanny Cam.

Lily has shown us recently that she is not happy unless she is about a foot taller.   Boy, is she going to be disappointed when she realizes that height is predetermined by genetics, and things are not looking as though they are in her favor.  Good thing she isn’t afraid to climb.  She must have some prop to lift her up to new heights.   This week Em and Lily were busy.  They went to a book time at the library, read by a real ballerina.  They went to a mummy play date at a park.  They cheered Ty on at soccer practice.  They had a lunch date with me at the office.  Busy girlies!

Tradies.

Anyone that does a specialized trade job (plumber, electrician, carpenter, etc) is called a tradie here.  If you have been following my blog for a while, you may recall some of the drama we have had with tradies.  No worries.  We will get to it tomorrow (or not).  She’ll be right.  We have had a leaky roof causing a really bad stain on the ceiling that looks like it will collapse during the next storm for a year and a half.  Attorneys number one to fix it was to paint over it.  Weird.  It came back.  I have heaps of examples…

We have received unexpected news that there are some people interested in renting our home in the US for a short 3 month contract.  We didn’t have it listed because we were waiting to do the repairs when a friend was available.  But, now that we have a renter, we had to find someone quick to get the job done.  Huge thanks to Ann and Kurt for hooking  us up with a guy that was able to start work immediately.  He is going to have our entire house put back together before the stain on our ceiling is fixed…  I don’t have any pictures of the damage to our house – only some of it after the demo work was done to rip out all of the wet, ruined stuff, but it gives you an idea of what we are dealing with.  Not fun to do from 13,000 miles away, but thankfully we have awesome friends that have been a blessing.

Invites.

I finally found the invitations that we wanted for Ty’s birthday (although I had to go back to buy more the next day because why would anyone stock more than 2 packages).  Ty helped by writing his name on all of them, he stuffed the envelopes, and put a sticker on the flap.  He was really excited to invite all of his friends.   If anyone else wants to come, it is Sunday, 24 May from 2-4 at Allabah Park.  See you then!

Tea.

Ty’s class was hosting a Mother’s Day afternoon tea, and there was no way I was going to miss that.  I left work early and didn’t quite know what to expect.  The tea exceeded all of my expectations.  I need to take tea party tips from Mrs H and Mrs Winter.  The kids were all sitting at the front of the classroom and as soon as all of the moms were in the room, they started singing a beautiful Mothers Day song.  I nearly cried.  So sweet.  The tables were all pushed together with tablecloths, a place setting, pretty pink gifts, and an envelope of adorable and precious artwork.  Ty and I decorated cupcakes, drank some juice.  I was so touched by the whole event.  Absolutely perfect.

Soccer.

This term Ty gets to play soccer on Thursdays after school.  Jay and I got to go to his first practice – right after tea.  He was really into it, listened well, ran and ran and ran.  His coach looks like Puckerman from Glee.  Ty looks like a pro.

Wine.

Jay flew home for his niece, Miranda’s, high school graduation.  This is what Em and I needed to survive the next two weeks.   Keep calm and drink wine.

Awards.

We have been encouraging Ty as much as possible to sit quietly and listen at school.  This has not been easy for him.  Even though he doesn’t seem to be able to sit still, the amount of information that he is storing in his little brain is shocking.  He has weekly tasks to do on the computer on a program called Literacy Planet.  He has 5 activities that he has to do before he can play other games.  If he isn’t happy with his score, he can try again to improve it.  He loves it.  Last week he attempted a couple tasks several times, getting better every time.  His dedication paid off – he was so excited to show me his awards on Friday!  Not just one, but TWO awards!  On for brains, one for behavior.  Way to go mate!

Saturday.

Our first weekend day without Jay went surprisingly well.  Swim lessons, followed by a trip to Bunnings.  Then it was back home to do what I thought would help calm my nerves and would teach my kids a lesson in organization and colors.  Hello.  My name is Nicole and I sort Legos.  Ty actually enjoyed the activity as well (I have created a monster).  It was amazingly therapeutic.  Highly recommend as a natural remedy for anyone suffering from anxiety and uber-stress.

Oh, and that couch that I wanted to move downstairs for a year and a half that Jay wouldn’t help me with is now sitting downstairs.  And it is awesome.

A little cleaning, fort building, costume party, and buggy/scooter ride to round out the day.

Mama’s Day.

Ty could not wait for Mothers Day.  At approximately 5:00 AM he came into my bed and said he really needed to go downstairs.  He woke poor Auntie Em up and they came upstairs with not one but two pots of flowers, a perfect card, and Ty’s envelope of crafts made at school, and the biggest smile ever.  Love my kids so much!!!

The day got me thinking about my own mom.  I miss her so much.  She would do anything for her babies (no matter the age), has sacrificed for us our entire lives, bends over backwards to make us happy, has super model good looks (just ask Andy Reutter) and loves us all so much.  I can only hope to be half the mom to my kids that my mom is to us.  And she is cool. I mean really, how many moms dress up like this for a Halloween party?

Shop.

Against my better judgement, fueled only by the need for Em to look hot on her birthday, we took the kids to Harbour Town.  We got there just in time for lunch and then Lily slept in her pram most of the afternoon.  I think Em came home with 5 pairs of shoes.  Not just shoes.  High heels.  After we finished shopping, we took the kids to see Pitch Perfect 2.  Both kids loved the dancing and singing.

When we got home we asked Facebook to vote on which dress Em should wear on her 30th birthday.  Red or blue, it’s up to you.  And the overwhelming winner was…….red!

Week.

The week has been a blur.  It was one of the busiest/stressful weeks at work. But I have an awesome team that pulled together to get through it all.  At home, Em took care of the day to day stuff – laundry, cooking, cleaning, chauffeur.  Evenings were eating, cleaning, bathing, reading.  Attempts to sleep.  Mostly failed.  Mornings were rush rush rush.  Repeat.  Survive.  We have done surprisingly well, but we miss Jay.

Birthday.

And then it was Friday, May 15.  30 years ago, I got a new baby sister.  She is my 6-year-later twin.  Despite being born with a heart defect, everyone that crosses her path quickly realizes she has the world’s biggest heart.  She is a natural born caretaker.  She is the most carefree, hardworking, hilarious, loving, all around awesome person I know.  I am lucky to have been able to live with her in Perry, Waterloo, and Hope Island during different phases of our lives – when we were kids, when she tried to be a college kid, and when I had 2 kids.  She has been such a blessing to us and I am so lucky to experience this adventure with her.  Happy birthday kiddo!!!

Nanny Cam.

Mad.

Ty got his school pictures this week.  He looks so handsome and grown up.  As soon as Jay posted the picture on Facebook, several people said he looks like Alfred E Neuman from Mad Magazine.  This side by side picture that my sister, Sundie, made is pretty shocking.  The freckles, the smile, the clothes, the hair, the ears…  Adorable.

Disco.

In a couple weeks, Ty gets to have a disco at school.  Awards go to Best Dressed and Best Dancer.  He will be rocking his suit.  To prepare, we thought we should see how one of the world’s best dancers moves.  Queue Michael Jackson You Tube videos.  I haven’t ever really sat down and watched MJ videos – they really are impressive.  Lily and Ty were glued to the iPad.  Ty has to work on his moves…

Cowboy Jeans Day.

The first Friday of every month is Jeans Day at the office.  Recently my department has started a little joke about line dancing in our aisle when we have a win during the day.  So we decided that it would be most appropriate for us to all wear our cowboy clothes for the next jeans day. Everyone joined in the fun.  Three of us wore acubras – one lady even brought in her bull whips.  Hilarious and awesome.  Such a fun group of people!

Ye Ol’ Barn.

I think I have posted pictures before of the old barn on the farm I grew up on. It is nearing the end of its days.  Steven has said every spring for the past 5 years “this is the summer that we are going to bury the barn.”  But he hasn’t done it yet.  I think it is because he can’t bear the thought of losing it.  It is the first thing I see when I turn down the gravel road and get close to home, sitting high on top of the hill.  I have helped cows give birth in that old barn.  I have brushed countless calves, attempting to halfway break them to lead before the county fair.  I have stacked a bazillion bales of hay in this barn.  God.  The heat.  The dust.  The itchiness.  The cute boys that were hired to help.  (I love my husband). The  disgusting wolf spiders that made the barn their home, but as much as I hate spiders they wouldn’t keep me from my hoop.  Oh, my basketball hoop.  I practically lived in the hay mount of the old barn.  I risked my life walking over a floor of straw and 100 year old chicken wire to retrieve a basketball.  I would dangle my heels off the edge so that I could practice my free throws.  I perfected what I will always call “the barn shot” which was as far back as I could go when there wasn’t hay for a floor.  The only time I could practice 3 pointers was when the rest of the barn was stacked with hay.  I was out there in the scorching heat, the freezing cold (wearing gloves with no fingertips), first thing in the morning, last thing at night.  Whenever I was home with no homework to do, you could find me in the barn.  *sigh*. Some might call it obsessive.  I guess we all have a little OCD in us…

As you can tell by the photos, there isn’t much hoop shooting going on in the barn these days.  I probably wouldn’t let Ty or Lily go inside for fear that those bowing boards would finally snap with them inside.  So it is certainly time for it to go.  The memories will never fade.

Here are some more pictures of the beautiful place I call home.  Living on the Gold Coast of Australia is about as different from my life as a kid as it is far away.  This experience makes me appreciate even more how lucky I was.  Missing home a bit, if you can’t tell…

Floods.

On Friday, the Gold Coast got hammered with torrential downpours.  Flash flooding was happening everywhere.  It took us over twice as long to get home as normal.  Jay looked outside in the middle of the night and the canal was over the brick wall.  Eerie.  There was a bunch of debris floating the next morning – mostly branches – and the water is a chocolate brown color.  But amongst the filth was a beautiful pelican.  Love how his reflection hit the water.  I watched him float up the canal, eat some breakfast, and fly away.

Horses.

The rain wasn’t going to stop Em from driving to Gatton to help some friends of a friend show their Shires.  She has been away from horses for a few months now, and for a girl that practically lived in Ray’s barn, she was missing it quite a bit.  The drive was quite stressful, but she made it.  She slept in a swag in a horse trailer, and according to her it was great.  She and I couldn’t be more opposite on our preference for accommodations…  The group of people that she was helping couldn’t have been more welcoming and inviting.  They heard she was missing bonfires, so they had one for her on Saturday.  Emily introduced them to the wonderful world of s’mores (sans the Hershey bars and graham crackers but with a suitable Aussie replacement).  She came home so happy – it was just what she needed.

May Day.

Big thank you to the Coen’s for bringing back wonderful childhood memories of May Day!  The kids loved getting their baskets.  I will join in the fun next year!

Locks.

On Saturday we had to run to the mall for a few things.  I am trying to get a head start on Ty’s birthday party planning – not going great.  No idea why 3 Knarts would be sold out of Captain America invitations…  We walked past a salon that wasn’t booked solid.  We looked at Lily with her sheep-dog mullet hair and decided to give her her first hair cut.  She did awesome.  She just sat there, on Jay’s lap, staring at herself in the mirror.  She didn’t move a muscle.  Such a good girl!

Rest.

Sunday was a relaxing day.  After realizing that Brumby has some wiring issues that were causing it to smoke (yikes) – thankfully before Jay and Ty left the house – the boys took the grass clippings to the dump.   Then they drove around and found the set for Pirates of the Carribbean – still no Johnny sightings…  They decided to go see the new Avengers movie – a good boys day.  Lily and I went grocery shopping and she slept for most of the afternoon.  I penciled in some plans for a trip to Melbourne and the Snowy Mountains and made a pot of chili.  Another week is in the books.  G’day mates!

Another Weekend in Paradise

Nanny Cam.

Em loves her job.  I don’t have to assume this – she tells me this every day.  And I love that Em loves her job.  She cooks, she cleans, she does laundry, she chauffeurs, she teaches, she cuddles with sick babies, she keeps the kids happy.   Seriously – all you single men out there have been missing out on Em.  She is going to make a fantastic wife someday!

Brumby.

Since Jay was able to finish installing the windshield wipers last weekend, he was chomping at the bit to get it inspected and (fingers crossed) registered.  He was able to get it in for an inspection on Wednesday.  For the first time, Brumby left our neighborhood and ventured out into the streets.  Jay was pretty nervous, hoping that it ran OK, didn’t overheat, and didn’t break down.  The old ute ran like a champ.  The only thing the inspector said needed to be improved was the way the seats were attached to the floorboard.  Since Jay is lacking a chop saw and some other key tools in his garage here, he booked an appointment to get it fixed up on Friday.  Overall, he was really pleased with the outcome.  And I think he enjoyed spending some time in a dude’s garage.

I was planning on working from home on Friday to focus on some things, so it worked out that I could follow Jay to the garage first thing Friday morning.  I should have led the way – that thing kicks out some major fumes!  We all went to pick it up at the end of the day.  I have never had a chance to ride in it, as I always had to stay home with the kids.  Since Em came with to pick it up, I got to go on my first ride.  I had a hard time getting the seatbelt to stop squeezing the life out of me, but once I got past my panic moment, I was able to relax and enjoy the ride.  It’s weird – I have no idea why – but everyone turns to look at Brumby as he’s cruising down the road.  ๐Ÿ™‚

When we got home, Ty had to go for a ride.   The boys went to the marina to pick out a movie – so fun!

Next step is to actually get it registered – hoping we can do that this week.  *sigh of relief*

Jumpinpin.

On Saturday morning, the kids climbed into our bed at 5:30 and Jay looked at the weather.  We were too late to go to an ANZAC (Australia New Zealand Army Corp) Day ceremony – have to leave the house at 3:00 AM and try to find a parking spot with 30,000 other spectators.  While it would have been an experience, we decided to go a different route.  It was looking like it was going to be a perfect day for a boat ride.  Ok, twist my arm.  The Coen’s didn’t have any set plans so they joined us.  We decided to go a little farther north and try to find Jumpinpin, which is the channel between North and South Stradbroke Islands.  Um.  Awesome.  We probably should have been going there for the past year and a half.  It was just another 10 minutes or so past Tipplers (one of our go-to destinations).  We beached the boat and had a quick picnic before going exploring. Tide pools, sand dunes, surf side, jellyfish, crabs, and SAND SLEDDING!!  Yes, I said sand sledding.  Give an Aussie a sand dune and a for sale sign, and you get a super fun time.  Even Lily gave it a go.  Sand and ocean as far as the eye can see.  We found a nice little spot to sit and relax while the kids splashed in the tide pools – a perfect depth to let Lily play without have to stress constantly.  We played pickle (like base running in baseball) in the water for a bit – reminded of the fun we used to have playing pickle in the creek back home.  Jack played DJ on the ride back home and picked out some pretty sweet old hits – and sang every word. Katie took some fantastic pictures of the day.  The weather, the water, the exploring, the friends – simply a perfect day.  Just what I needed to relax.

Fiji.

Sunday morning I told everyone that we were not leaving the house until we had a vacation booked.  I didn’t care which one, as long as we did more than just look at things.  Earlier in the week I saw a flash sale for a trip to Tasmania for dirt cheap, waited until morning to talk to Jay about it, and the seats were sold out before we could book them.  Damn.  Not going to let that happen again.

Shortly after we found out we were moving to Australia, I realized how close Fiji is, and told Jay that we have to go there.  When I started looking at flights on Sunday morning, I went to the sale section and saw that there was a flight to Fiji on sale for the week that we were planning on going to the outback in June.  Fiji had been penciled in for October, but we decided to take advantage of the sale price and do a swap.  We all were scouring the Internet trying to find a place to stay, and ended up booking the Outrigger, which seems to be a great place to go with kids.  We booked the flight and hotel – the rest will get sorted later.  I AM SO EXCITED!!!

Sea World.

As soon as we booked the trip, I got out-voted by everyone (kind of wanted to stay home and relax), so we got ready quick and headed down to Sea World for the afternoon.  Em’s jaw dropped when she walked into the Penguin Encounter, and I don’t think she lifted her jaw until we left.  Polar bears, Sharks, stingrays, seals, Dolphins, jetskis, jet packs.  I have seen the dolphin show twice now, and for all of you Sea World haters out there, you’re crazy.  Those Dolphins are happy as can be.  And the dolphin trainers have the best job in the world.  So. Stinking. Awesome.

For not having any plans going into the weekend, we ended up having a really fun time.  The kids were SO GOOD, which meant that all of us could just relax and have fun.  This one can go down as another fantastic weekend on the Gold Coast.  Feeling blessed and so fortunate for the opportunities we are living.  G’day mates!

Outings.

Ty got to go on 2 more field trips at vacation care this week.  They went to see the movie Home at a theater, and they went to a trampoline park.  He loves vacation care!

Nanny Cam.

I think Emily loves her job.

Queen.

Thursday was a big day for our little princess.  We traded her cot in for a queen-sized big girl bed!!  She absolutely loves it.  She has slept through the night every nights since its arrival.  She insists on taking naps in it – she never wanted to nap in her cot.  And when she wakes from her nap she wants to stay in bed to read books.

Balloon.

We can usually see 2 hot air balloons off in the distance, over the mountains, in the mornings.  Lily loves to watch them – she gets so excited “BALLOON!!!”  This week a balloon almost went right over the top of our house.  So exciting!!  I snapped this picture when it was on its way toward us.

Ibis.

There are birds here that are known to be food thiefs – an Australian ibis.  We see these birds everywhere, and we know that if we are eating outside we have to be careful that an Ibis doesn’t steal our food.  We have to do the same with Lily – she is always stealing food.  If anyone leaves a tasty snack within reach, consider it gone inside Lily’s belly.  Here is a picture of an ibis from the Internet, and a picture of our little ibis “helping” dad make his lunch.

Saturday.

Saturday was great.  Just a normal day, nothing extravagant.  Jay and Ty worked in the garage.  Ty cleaned out the dirt in the garage, and then cleaned the dirt that blew into the house.  Jay made progress on the wipers on Brumby – one step closer to getting it safety certified and registered in Queensland.  Em hadn’t heard it run before and was shocked at how loud it is.  Jay took her on a 2 minute ride through the neighborhood to dust off the cobwebs.

We signed Ty and Lily back up for swim lessons at Gullivers.  We will see how we go – we were spoiled by one teacher who he really wanted to impress and unfortunately isn’t teaching lessons on the weekend.  He did pretty good on his first day back.  Lily loved every second of her lesson.  Jay swam with her.  Couldn’t wipe the smiles off her face.  Such a water baby.

 Shop.

Em gets to help a friend of a friend at a horse show in a couple weeks, so she needed to go shopping to pick up an outfit to show in.  We decided to also try to find something for her to wear out on her 30th birthday.  She surprisingly has mentioned that maybe she doesn’t want to go out in her normal boots & jeans…perhaps a fancy dress and high heels.  SHOCKER!!!  We had fun trying on some clothes – I think we found a couple options.  Yes, I said a couple.  Emily Geisler bought multiple dresses. Now we are on the lookout for the perfect pair of heels (yes I said heels).

The Gem.

We heard on the radio that there was a bulls and Broncs rodeo at a bar a few exits up the road.  Of course we had to go.  It was at the Gem Hotel (hotel as in bar with rooms available if you get too smashed to drive home but not the type of motel that you would book in advance to holiday at).  I knew the people watching would be interesting, but wow.  Some interesting choices of outfits, for sure. Ty set up his bag chair right up front – he didn’t want to sit back by the rest of us – too cool for that.  The rodeo started at 6:30.  First “novice bull rider” out of the chutes ended up being hauled off on a stretcher, setting the tone for the rest of the night.  I don’t know where they found these guys, but if your day job is selling real estate, perhaps you should think twice before climbing on a bull in a Saturday night.  I don’t think more than 2 people covered their rides.  I am not positive, though, because I lost interest in the rodeo after so much time was spent trying to haul people out on stretchers.  Not a good night when more people rode an ambulance that rode a bull.  On a positive note, I got a lot of snuggles with Lily, and because the rodeo wasn’t keeping my attention, I took a little nap as well.

The best part of the rodeo was the after party.  We turned our chairs around to watch the “dance” which consisted of the rodeo announcer strapping on a guitar and singing some country music.  I don’t know how it happened, but two doo-dahs that were very much happy drunk put on an unplanned comedy show right next to where we were sitting.  They were doing all sorts of dance moves (if you can call it that) and challenging a group of kids to one-up them.  The blokes attempted to do a back flip that was a hilariously massive fail.  The kids got all excited and started to push one of their mates into the circle.  He took of his cowboy boots and landed an awesome back flip.  By this point there was quite a crowd watching and everyone went wild.  One of the blokes had a bit of a belt problem so the whole time his red undies were showing.  At one point Em told some guy next to her that someone should give him a wedgie.  3 seconds later, the guy walked into the circle and gave the bloke the world’s most giant wedgie – and ripped part of his underwear off.  And it was all downhill from there.  Dude’s cheeks were hanging out, he mooned the kids, and we quickly packed up and removed our children from the scene.  Ty was taking it all in, I’m sure, and packing all of those crazy moves into his little memory bank.  Oh boy….

Sunday.

Sunday morning after breakfast Em, Lily and I went to Sanctuary Cove to do some shopping.  The boys stayed home and worked on the truck.  Lily wasn’t a very good shopper – was pretty fussy – so the plan to go to the beach afterward changed.  (At what age can I enjoy a meal at a restaurant with the kids????). I didn’t want to drag her out.  We all went for a big swim at home, then Ty, Em and I went for a bike ride.  Ty got tired of riding his bike, so Em ride ahead to get the buggy to pick us up.  When we got home, the neighbor boys were outside playing, so I chatted with their mom while the boys came over to play a bit.

Em has Polska Kielbasa on the stove, Ty has cookies baking in the oven.  Nice quiet weekend.  Ty has one more day of vacation care before Term 2 starts on Tuesday.  Excited to see what he will learn this term!  Hoping for a low stress week at work.  Em has netball on Monday, me on Wednesday.  Not sure what else we have going on – sure something fun will come up.  G’day mates!
