Kids, We’re Going to Movie World

Bakery.
We went to the bakery (the grocery stores usually have a baker and a butcher shop just outside the grocery store – unrelated, ma and pa type places). I thought the cheesey rolls looked good, so I bought a couple. And then I saw something that looked like cinnamon rolls, and I started salivating…and then I found out they are rolls that are not filled with cinnamon, which would be delicious, but instead they are filled with Vegemite, which is anything but delicious. Sorry to all of you Vegemite fans out there…

Ink.
Australians love their ink. Tattoos (pronounced taDOOs here) are everywhere. You are in the minority if you don’t have a giant tattoo. Apparently Ty didn’t want to be in the minority. He grabbed a Sharpie when we weren’t looking and inked himself. I could barely contain my laughter. Part of me wanted to get mad, but the side that wanted to laugh won that argument. Jay was able to scrub most of it off, but it looks like he will be going to school tomorrow with remnants of his taDOO on his face and tummy.

WB Movie World.
At brekky we asked Ty what he wanted to do today. There was a 40% chance of rain so we didn’t want to take the boat out. He said, “I want to go to Disney World!” Well, there isn’t a Disney World in Australia, but there is a Warner Brothers Movie World the next exit down the M1. And we have free passes. So OK, son, let’s go.
The first stop was a show where motorcycles do ramp stunts and tricked out cars chase everyone around. It was pretty neat.
Ty is still too little for a lot of the rides, so we made our way back to the kiddy rides area. Ty wanted to go on the carousel, but he didn’t want to ride a “horse”, instead he chose to sit on the bench. Lily seemed to enjoy the ride, too.

20140202-152218.jpg
Next stop was the bumper cars. Ty did a pretty good job driving it around!

20140202-152300.jpg
After that he had worked up enough courage to try the “thrill ride” – Sylvester’s. At first he wasn’t too sure about it, but then he loved it! He wanted to go again and again and again! There is a video on Facebook of the ride.

20140202-180413.jpg
Next up was the batman show on the Main Street. We found a decent seat and jay went off to find lunch. The show started and a police car and the batmobile drove right in front of us! Ty thought the show was pretty awesome (a little too much fighting in my opinion, but I guess that is what batman does).

20140202-152933.jpg
After a quick lunch we headed to the Wild West area. I somehow talked Ty into doing the log ride. It looked pretty intense, but he wasn’t worried about the down hill part – he just didn’t want to get water in his eyes.
There wasn’t much of a wait, so we got on a boat pretty quickly. We went up a hill, into a tunnel, and then it shot us out backwards. Wasn’t expecting that, but Ty kept on being a trooper. After we got turned around face first, we had a nice lazy boat ride through an old western town. Ty said a couple times “we aren’t going up a hill.” And then we came up to the hill. I talked him through it, told him what I thought was going to happen. I told him to close his eyes when we go down the hill so he doesn’t get water in them. And then down we went!! Pretty fast! Splash!! Laughing, laughing, laughing! He did awesome – gave me a big high five when we got off the boat. 🙂

AC.
Ugh. So the air turned on for a bit last night, enough to cool the house down. Today it isn’t working again. So. Stinking. Hot. Thank goodness for the nice breeze. And the pool. I sent Jay to the store while Ty was napping. I got hot, so I put Lily in her playpen and I went for a swim. Jay came home, put Lily in a swim diaper, and the 2 of them joined me for a bit until Ty woke up. Pretty sure we are going to need a pool when we go back home…probably one just like we have here.

Quiet evening.
The night ahead should be pretty quiet. The boys went to pick up Thai for dinner. Lily and I are snuggling a bit. Going to make some fruit salad for the week, and then call it a night. Such a fun weekend. So blessed.

G’day mates!

Level 2.
Ty had an exciting day at swim lessons this morning. He was doing really well. He can hold his breath forever, float on his back and his tummy, do the “rocket ship” swim, pick up things off the bottom of the pool, and his kicking is pretty good. The supervisor stopped by his class and asked his teacher, Jara, if anyone was ready to move forward. Jara said he had one that was close. The teacher wanted to see the kids do all of the things required in Level 1. When they got done she said, “Yep, he’s ready for a new challenge.” And she was talking about Ty! Yay!! Whenever anyone moves up to the next level, they get to ring a bell and everyone at the pool claps and cheers. It is really neat – makes the kids feel special. They also get a certificate saying they passed. So proud of my little fish.

Under water.
Meanwhile, in the Babies 1 level, Lily was having a great time. She loves the water. The teacher thought she was showing all of the signs to be ready to put her face in the water, so I let her take Lily. She said the cues – “wait. Ready. Go!” And dipped her into the water. Lily came out a little confused, but then she smiled. :). We did it a couple more times and she didn’t mind a bit. She is only under water for a second or two, so grandmas, don’t stress.

Broadwater.

20140201-174439.jpg
After stopping at the store to pick up some food for a picnic lunch on the boat, we packed up an esky (cooler), made some sandwiches (finally used a picnic backpack that we got for a wedding present, which worked great!), and loaded up the boat. Lily wasn’t too sure about the life jacket. She kind of hated it at first, but eventually realized that she better get used to it. :). Ty wanted to go fast…unfortunately you have to go slow (6 knots) until you get out of the canals (the red line on the picture above was our route). Lily slept most of the way out. By the time we got to the Broadwater where you can hammer down, Lily was ready to eat, and so were Ty and I. And Ty had to go potty. We have a toilet on the boat, but Jay only wants to use it in an emergency, so Ty had to go wee off the back. It was a little choppy and windy, so he had some serious stage fright, but eventually he took care of business. And when he finished, dad cranked up the stereo and we had a celebration dance party. We floated around a bit, got everyone’s tummies full, and then we let Jay play a bit. Ty loved it when we hit some waves (me, not so much).
We decided we need to ask around, figure out where we can go and safely either dock it or sand it (nervous about this), swim, eat, use a toilet. The first outing was a good confidence builder for both Jay and I. The kids did great. They were worn out when we decided to head for home, and both of them fell asleep (under the shade of the biminy). I got to relax in the front bow for a bit while Jay drove us back up the canals.
We were pretty much incident free, until the boat made an awful noise. Jay threw it into neutral really quickly, and realized we had missed a buoy and needed to be a ways to the right. The water level was only 2 feet. That is not deep enough….I was immediately thinking about what we were going to do if we got stuck on a sandbar. I was really hoping I wouldn’t have to jump in the shark infested waters and push it off the sand bar…thankfully we were able to get back on the main channel without getting stuck. Yikes. That was a close one. Hoping we don’t make that mistake again. Rookie mistake. Keep it between the buoys.
Overall it was a great first family outing – so much fun. I can’t wait to take family and friends out!

Air Con.
When we got home, we noticed that the air conditioner wasn’t running. Crud. It was 30 degrees upstairs – that’s hot. We called the property management company and they told us broken air conditioners are not considered an emergency, so they won’t pay extra to send out a repair man on the weekend. Grrrrrr. There is a nice breeze outside, but remember, we don’t have screens. And remember where we live – amongst the poisonous everythings. We are braving it a bit and have the windows and doors open, but as soon as the sun goes down and the lizards come out, everything is getting sealed up tight. Going to be a hot one tonight…

Pool.
To cool off, we put Lily in her playpen (in the shade) and Jay, Ty and I jumped in the pool. We splashed around for about an hour before coming inside to cook dinner. Lily wanted to snuggle so Jay threw some brats on the barbie and I sat on the patio with my sweet sleeping babe.

Signing.
When Jay was feeding Lily rice cereal and zucchini, she ate every last bite, and then she put her hand up to her mouth, then put her fists together in front of her. Jay said he thought she was signing “eat. More.” I think she was. They have been working on it at school. Amazing!! So I gave her some carrots. Happy babe.

G’day mates!

No Dramas, Mate

HH Update.
A producer from House Hunters International wanted to talk to me on the phone to discuss a few things. They really would like it if one of us could fly back to the US to do a day of filming for the back story. She said it isn’t a deal breaker if we can’t do it – I really don’t think we can do that bit. Hopefully that isn’t the deciding factor. We discussed dates (good sign) and I requested a week that Sherry is here. How fun would that be to have her here for the filming?! There is some paperwork that the homeowner and property managers have to sign, so I am hoping to get that in the next day it two. This might actually happen!!
I told my boss that I might have to take some time off that week, and then surely after that Hollywood will need me to go do some full time shows. Surely. Just wanted her to have a heads up that she might need to look for a new SME. 🙂

Headlock.
Jay got a call from Ty’s teacher on Thursday. Apparently he was playing play-doh with a little girl today and he decided to put her in a headlock. Where would he have learned that? What would cause him to do it? Ugh. No TV the rest of the week… Whoever said parenting is easy is crazy. How does one go about raising a gentleman without completely squashing his natural personality?

El Bandito.
Aussies like to use the term “no dramas” but it seems like nothing ever actually gets done here without drama. The Seapen was supposed to be delivered on Thursday, and it was…sort of. They got it to our house, but got called off in an emergency (leaking Seapen) so they couldn’t do the permanent installation. The guy that would have been the backup plan to install it was off crook (called in sick). They promised to get it done on Friday.
We heard from the mechanic that the boat was ready on Friday morning. Jay called the Seapen place and they didn’t realize it hadn’t been permanently installed… So they sent a guy over to do it right away.
Meanwhile, Jay and I took a half day of vacation to go pick up the boat, so we were really hoping the Seapen would be ready soon.
We paid the mechanic (ouch) and chatted with him and his wife a bit about places to go, how to catch bait for fish, what to do as a first mate (I wasn’t even sure how to tie the rope to the boat & dock).
The Seapen guy called and said everything was all set. So, we climbed aboard, and nervously set off.

20140131-181541.jpg
We had to fill up with fuel so I had my first duties as first mate. I used my new found knowledge and tied the ropes to the boat, and after jay pulled up to the pump like an old pro, I got us tied off. Phew.
$250 later, the tank was almost full.

20140131-181808.jpg
The Gold Coast Marina (where the boat was getting repaired) was way closer to our house than I thought. It looked close on the map, but it takes 10-15 minutes to drive there. It probably didn’t take us more than 20 minutes to get home. We were both pretty nervous, but thankfully it was pretty uneventful. The Seapen worked great, so El Bandito is sitting high and dry.
We picked up the kids from school (Ty had a much better day) and Ty couldn’t wait to get home to see the boat. We got it all cleaned up and the cover put on before the rain comes. We are hoping that the weather stays clear a bit this weekend so we can go exploring!

20140131-182857.jpg

Sharks.
The neighbors were excited to see our boat. We talked to them more tonight than we have in the 3 months we have lived here. :). They were telling us that the other day, the guy was fishing off their pontoon. His line drifted downstream to right next to our pontoon. He caught ELEVEN bull sharks…right in front of our pontoon… Holy moly.
In true redneck Australian fashion, he put 3 of them in their pool to freak out the lady of the house. I wish I would have seen her face when she came home to that!
I told them they have to knock on the door the next time they go fishing. I want to see this with my own eyes!

G’Day mates! Happy weekend!

The Purpose of a Porpoise

Dolphins.
Sunday night I was up with a fussy baby several times. I finally let her come to the big bed around 4:30 to sleep in the middle – amazing how much better she sleeps next to mama. I know there are mixed opinions out there about this…not trying to start a debate. I just really didn’t want to get out of bed again.
Because it was month end, Jay had to get up on Monday morning and go to work, while I stayed home with the kids in celebration of Australia Day. He went downstairs for brekky, and not long after that Ty woke up and went downstairs. At about 6:00 I heard Jay yelling “Babe!!! Go look out the window!! Hurry!!” I jumped out of the bed to see what was the matter. And what to my wondering eyes did appear but 4 freaking DOLPHINS swimming in the canal. I was as excited as a kid on Christmas morning. At first I thought it was sharks, but then they jumped out of the water and squirted air out of their breathing holes. I checked on Lily (still sleeping…finally), grabbed my phone, and took a couple videos of them. They are on my Facebook page. A.maze.ing.

20140128-205138.jpg
I googled it today and it doesn’t sound like dolphins in canals is a very common occurrence. A few days ago a family of dolphins was spotted in a canal quite a ways south of us. The article said that in 10 years, they had never seen dolphins. The coast guard was monitoring them to make sure they had enough to eat. The high tides are partially to blame. My professional opinion is that the developing cyclone in northern Queensland is either throwing them off course or making them run for cover. And whatever has been keeping my kids up at night also affected the dolphins. I am sure there is scientific evidence to back up my theory.
I have limited memories of my dad (he died when I was 8), but I do remember that he always wanted to live on the water. He was a die hard fisherman, wetting a line whenever he had the chance. He even made a living out of his passion. I wonder what he would have had to say about us seeing dolphins in our backyard. :). Might have been a little sign from above that even though I might have a not so great day every now and then, to not forget about how fortunate we are right now. Thanks for that, dad.

Australia Day.
So the dolphins swam off, leaving me and the kids to find other ways to entertain ourselves. It was pretty windy out, and on the cooler side, so my plans of going to the pool were nixed. I did a little housework while Ty watched Wreck It Ralph. We wanted to get some fresh air and a “work out”. The last time Ty rode his bike he got a little ahead of himself and took a spill, so he has been a little gun shy about climbing back in the saddle. I somehow managed to talk him into it, and we took off down the road at a snail’s pace. We made it half a block before the fear took over and he said he was done. I convinced him to ride it home, only after promising a special treat. Thank goodness he didn’t fall off. We will try again soon to reinforce his progress. After dropping off the bike, we walked around the block. As soon as we saw our driveway Ty reminded me of the treat (he doesn’t forget a thing), so we had a Zooper Dooper (freezy pop) to cool off.
I fixed a bowl of rice cereal for Lily and started feeding it to her. Ty crawled under the table, and I smelled something stinky. Wasn’t the kid wearing a diaper, unfortunately. So I left my starving baby crying in her high chair to clean poo out of undies, then returned for a few bites before hearing, “mom, I’m done” forcing me to leave the starving baby again, only to realize that toilet paper wasn’t going to cut it. I sent Ty up to get in the shower, finished Lily’s morning tea to stop her screaming (she was probably going to die of starvation), and helped Ty get cleaned up.
After the shower, we went back downstairs and I put Lily in her bouncy chair. She got a little fussy, so I picked her up and my hand went right onto a wet spot on her shorts. You guessed it. More poo. On her, on her clothes, on the bouncy chair, on me. So we got that all cleaned up and decided it was time for lunch and a nap. 2 hours later, I woke up (my excuse for that is that I hadn’t slept for 3 nights) and fiddled around for another hour before the kids woke up. After nap we played Legos and cooked dinner. We were happy to see dad pull in the driveway. It was funny, though. Any other day I would have complained about all of the poo. But then I remembered that we saw dolphins in our backyard. Life is good.

House Hunters.
I have (not so) secretly wanted to be an actress my entire life. I was really surprised when Hollywood didn’t come knocking after my 1996(ish??) appearance as Aunt Eller in OHS’s performance of Oklahoma. Weird.
Back when we first found out we were moving to Australia, I used lots of different sources to find information about the country way far away that we were about to call our temporary home. I talked to co-workers who had worked at the branch in the past, I nearly found the end of the internet, and I even recorded HGTV’s House Hunters International to catch glimpses of what life is like in Oz.
As I watched episodes of House Hunters I thought, hey, we have a pretty cool story. We have a newborn baby, a toddler, and we are leaving small town Iowa for the beaches of Australia. Seems like a good storyline – at least as good as the chic who quit her job in the states and hurried to Australia for her new job as organizer of the solar eclipse…. So what the heck, I sent them an email and a family photo (thanks Ann Steward Photography for the great pic). I didn’t embellish, really didn’t say much more than what I just told you. I didn’t expect to hear back from them.
Jay’s house hunting trip came and went. At one point I had the thought, “I’m kind of glad I didn’t hear back from House Hunters because I wasn’t able to do any of the house hunting.”
Here we are 3 months settled into our new life and I get an email wondering if I am still interested in being part of the show. Um, pretty sure I had said in my original email that we were moving at the end of October. I politely replied that I would have loved to, but we were already moved in, and if our lease runs out before it is time to move back to the US, I would surely let them know.
*spoiler alert!!!*
And then I got a reply back saying, “oh, that doesn’t disqualify you from being a part of the show.” Silly me. How crazy to think that to be on House Hunters you had to actually hunt for houses. Just answer a few questions, send some more pics, and we will see if we can get you on the filming schedule.
WHAT?!?! For real?!?! I knew Hollywood would call someday. I just knew it.
So…don’t get your hopes up (talking to myself here…) because a lot of things could prevent this from actually happening. I have to make sure the company doesn’t have a policy against this sort of thing since we are here for work. We have to make sure the week they want to do filming isn’t during month end, or SAP upgrade testing. And the fact that we can’t go back to Davenport for “pretend that we are leaving Davenport to move to Australia” filming might be a deal breaker. But just the thought of it, and getting a real response back, is pretty stinking exciting.
Surely the dolphins had something to do with this stroke of good luck.

Bottomless Pit.
Even after introducing rice cereal and veggies (so far squash, zucchini, and carrots), my little chunky monkey is still hungry. So, the 2-3 bottles of milk that I am producing in a day isn’t keeping up with Lily’s 3-4 bottles per day consumption. I am admitting defeat (sadly) and starting to introduce a little formula into her bottles this week. *sigh*. I will keep producing as long as I can and be thankful for what I have been able to give her.

Here’s to a great week ahead. G’day mates!

Apple Pie.
We ate a piece if the Yatala apple pie Saturday night. It didn’t taste like mom’s (not even close), but it wasn’t terrible. The crust was strange – was more like a cookie. I was going to have another piece on Sunday, but the ants got to it first. Every so often if I leave any food on this one counter, we will have an infiltration of tiny ants. They don’t go beyond the counter (somehow they haven’t noticed the entire pantry full of food). So gross.

20140126-210839.jpg

The Bearded Dragon.
We heard from a co-worker that a restaurant/tavern has a reptile show and cane road races every Sunday. We saw online that the reptile show was at 11:30, but weren’t sure about the cane toad races. We took our chances and “hopped” for the best (wah wah). We had to drive over Tambourine Mountain to get there, and I have been wanting to go to Mt Tambourine since the week we moved here, so I was all for the Australia Day adventure.
The drive over the mountain was beautiful. The road could use some repairs, and I was glad the kids fell asleep so I didn’t have to catch puke. I was amazed that there is a for real rainforest 30 minutes from our house. At the top of the mountain there is a little village with a bunch of shops and people milling about. Hold that thought…
About 10 minutes later we pulled into The Bearded Dragon. I am not exactly sure what I was expecting, but it wasn’t that. In the spirit of Australia Day they had a “carnival”, which consisted of a sketch Ferris wheel, bumper cars, a haunted house, bungy jumpers, and an inflatable water slide (that was held up by ropes tied to the wheels of a car). It was kind of chilly, so I didn’t see a single kid go down the water slide. There was a large covered outdoor patio area. We grabbed a table and ordered an early lunch since we had about an hour to kill before the reptile show. The food was just meh, ok. The people watching was great – quite an interesting group of people that chose to spend their Australia Day at the Bearded Dragon. I guess we were one of them, so what does that say about us? Ty didn’t really want to do any of the rides (thank goodness). 11:30 came and went and a band was setting up where we thought the reptile guy was. I asked a bartender if there was a reptile show today and she said, “oh yeah, he’s out back. Running a little behind today.” Turns out “out back” also contained a small pasture with a couple alpacas (random). We found the reptile guy. He had a little pen set up with 5 or 6 covered tubs inside it. He pulled out some gross looking reptile, walked it around for everyone to touch (ewww!), and talked for 10 minutes about lizard facts – for each one… Ty was the kid that said, “dad, I’m done.” We made him tough it out for 3 reptiles, and then we decided to hit the road. Kind of a flop.
Oh, and the cane toad races…those didn’t start until 3:00. We for sure were not wasting the whole day at the tavern. Nuts. I thought it might be fun to start adding pictures of maps of the places we go so 50 years from now we can remember where we went.

20140126-210152.jpg

20140126-210202.jpg

20140126-210340.jpg

20140126-210402.jpg

Village.
We got in the car and drove back up the mountain to go to the little shops that we passed on the way over. I was imagining it to be kind of like Galena or a Breckenridge sort of shopping experience, full of interesting things made by local artists. Um. No. The “handmade crafts” were cross-stitched doilies. There was one store that sold Australiana, but it wasn’t great stuff. There were, however, about 15 different places to have tea… There were HEAPS of people, willing to spend cash on stuff, but there was absolutely not a single thing worth buying. More opportunity for all of you entrepreneurs…

Next time.
So the next time we go to the mountain, we will not be going to the Bearded Dragon or the shops. We will do more of the adventurous things that we didn’t feel like doing today with the kiddos. There is a skywalk that goes out over the rainforest canopy. There is a waterfall with a pond at the bottom that you can swim in (just like the movies). There is a distillery, some wineries, and breweries. We just picked the 2 worst things to do on Tambourine Mountain. We will give it one more try…

Swim.
Since the day’s outing was a flop, we decided to go for a swim when we got home. It was kind of chilly – pretty windy, but as long as we stayed in the water it was fine. Ty and I played a bit while Jay kept Lily happy and warm outside the pool (and cleaned up carrot puke – the new veggie of the day).

Holiday.
So all in all, Australia Day was kind of lame. I still couldn’t tell you what the holiday is celebrating – am guessing many Aussies couldn’t either. It sure didn’t feel like the 4th of July. I think it didn’t help that we were tired because Lily was up several times during the night before with a stuffed up nose.

Jay has to go to work tomorrow (unfortunately the corporate month end schedule doesn’t care about Australian holidays), so the kids and I are flying solo. Not sure what we are going to do yet. Hoping for a better day tomorrow.

Boat update.
Jay and I took a half day of vacation to go check out the progress on the boat repairs. Jay took some pictures that I am sure will appear on his Facebook page. It wasn’t very interesting to me (so not a gear head), I just wanted to know when I can get out on the water. Good news: It should be all put back together by Thursday. Bad news: they are only open during the week and Jay has month end. I am really hoping we can figure out how to pick it up before the weekend!!
The Seapen is getting installed this week. We are also talking to a guy to see if we can get the boat’s name put on it. Since we couldn’t bring our dog Bandit with us to Australia, we decided to have him here in spirit by naming the boat El Bandito. I can picture him riding in the front of the boat, ears flapping in the wind, dog-grinning from ear to ear.

Yatala Pies.
Jay and I needed to get lunch somewhere before we went to the boat shop. Every day we drive past the exit for the “Famous Yatala Pies”, so we figured we better give it a go since we had some time. Keep in mind, these are not fruit pies (although they do make fruit pies so we picked up an apple pie to take home). These are meat pies. My prior encounter with meat pies, if you recall, was not a great one. The pie had been sitting out too long and had become lukewarm. Plus I think it was just a frozen appetizer type thing, not homemade, and really was quite disgusting. But I was willing to try one more time at the “best place to get a meat pie”. I ordered a steak, cheese, and bacon pie. Jay got the same thing. In order to complete my Aussie meal, I grabbed a Bundaberg Peachy out of the cooler, as well. I was quite nervous, so I ordered chip (fries) and a pavlova just in case the pie was icky.

20140125-090802.jpg

20140125-090818.jpg
So I took a bite and couldn’t really decide if I liked it or not, so I didn’t say anything. I took a few more bites and said, “um, I don’t know” which I then repeated probably 20 times. The crust was really good. I guess I was picturing in my head that the filling would be ground beef (or mince as they say here) or steak pieces with melted cheese and delicious bacon inside. But it was more like they ran the beef through a blender until it was nearly the consistency of puréed baby food, added some gravy and chunks of ham, and sprinkled a few bits of cheese on top.

20140125-091240.jpg
I choked down half of it before I decided enough was enough, I gave it a fair shot, and switched to chips and pavlova. That goodness I ordered those. :). I suppose I could have ordered a sausage roll, instead… Ewww!
So I won’t be stopping at the Yatala Pie shop anymore, unless our guests really want to experience some authentic Australian food. But on the bright side, at least now I don’t have to wonder whether or not I like meat pies.

Fish.
Lily had her first swim lesson this morning. She took to it like a little fish – kicking, splashing, laughing. She LOVED it!! She didn’t put her head under water today, instead the teacher took a bucket of water and sprinkled it over her head. She thought that next week Lily will be able to go under a bit. I will see how she and I both feel about it – will only do it if I feel comfortable and if Lily seems to like it.

20140125-134359.jpg

Tripod.
Lily somehow managed to balance herself on 3 limbs the other day. It was pretty impressive – I am not sure I could do it. Ty wanted to try, though.

20140125-135202.jpg
She pushed herself up on all 4s last night but hasn’t tried to move forward. I predict by the end of the weekend she will be crawling. Time to install the baby gate!

Sanctuary Cove.
This morning we went to Sanctuary Cove. I needed to return some things Jay got me for Christmas (he told the lady at the store my US size, which is 4 sizes different than Australia – I only wish I could squeeze into a size small). Lily and I shopped around while the boys explored the resort hotel and pools. About the time Ty decided to have a meltdown at the restaurant at lunch, was about the time we decided he needed to go home and get a good nap. It got me thinking about school. In a year he will go to prep (kindergarten) and he won’t be able to take a nap during the day. He is going to be a hot mess…I am amazed how many kids his age don’t take naps. How do they make it through a day? Maybe their days don’t start at 5:00 like Ty’s day. Maybe in a few months we will start trying to ween him off of naps.

Barriers.
Along the interstate, many of the noise barrier walls are painted with scenes of Australia – kangaroos, koalas, etc. The trunks of trees that are hidden behind the walls are painted onto the walls. It is a nice touch to try to make something that could be pretty ugly, pretty awesome.

Random kid pics.
Aunt Jekka complained that it has been 4 days since she saw a picture of the kids. This is the best I could do before school.

MAIL!
Today we can declare Dusty & Terra Day because we got 2 pieces of mail that were Blint related. First, an adorable Christmas card with a picture of baby sandals on a beach (ahhhhhh!) and a fantastic letter about everything and nothing and everything in between that me laugh out loud on multiple occasions. And secondly an invitation to baby Blint’s baby shower. Unfortunately I am going to have to RSVP my regrets, but I will be there in spirit (maybe we can do a quick FaceTime). I love mail. I love babies. I love things that make me laugh. Thank you!!

Lazy.
Ok. Really. If you are too lazy to walk your dog, don’t get a dog. If your solution involves using your buggy to “walk” your dog, don’t get a dog. I have seen this on numerous occasions in our neighborhood. In a way, it reminds me of Wall-E.

Cockroaches.
I think the cockroaches here are on steroids. I wouldn’t consider killing them by stepping on them – the thought of the crunching noise it would make causes me to nearly vomit. Ewwwwww! I tried to find a good picture online that shows the size of these, but couldn’t find the perfect one. Just Google “Australian cockroaches” and have a barf bag ready. Thankfully the only ones I have seen in our house have been dead, but some at the office have been alive. A small child could ride these things (nearly).

Fruit bats.
I don’t know if I have mentioned this in a prior post, but most evenings we see giant fruit bats flying along the canal. Lately there have been heaps of them. One of the guys at work said he saw hundreds flying near his house. Ewwwwww!

Seniors.
The CEO and a few members of the senior executive staff visited the office today. Call me a nerd, but I was thoroughly interested in what they had to say. It was nice to see some familiar faces (not saying we are best buds, by any means, but reminded me of my days at Corporate). I left feeling proud of the company I work for – not that I needed a reminder. I have to admit I was most interested in the bits of the discussion that were related to Treasury, JD Financial, and our investors. You can take the girl out of Treasury, but it’s tough to take the Treasury out of the girl. All in all it reminded me of the big picture. I think that lately I have been overwhelmed with the details. Feeling refreshed and motivated (for a while anyway…).

Saturday.
Nothing really exciting to share about our Saturday, I am sorry to say. We had swim lessons in the morning, then we went to a mall, picked up the boat “title” (really just a printout saying we own the boat…apparently boats and used cars don’t have titles???). I had a hair appointment after lunch and snuck out a few minutes early to hit the little boutique at the marina. I found a couple cute things, very “marina-ish”.

Church.
Saturday evening we went to church. I asked Ty to go pick out a nice outfit for church. First attempt was a tshirt and mesh shorts. I clarified by saying he needed a collared shirt. This is what he came up with. I guess I should have told him he needed shorts, too.

Ty was excited, even when I told him he had to sit there and be quiet for almost 2 Dora episodes. I don’t know if he is even quiet for that long when he is sleeping. He said, “I will mom.” He did really well. The hardest part was seeing his friend Maddie in the front row and not being able to go say hi. Lily did great too, just a couple squeaks. The church isn’t heated or air conditioned, so it was pretty warm, but we kept cool by using the program as a fan. Towards the end of the service I could tell Ty was getting bored. He was laying his head on my lap, and a man behind us handed a paper airplane to Ty. It was just what he needed to make it through the rest of the mass. And then a boy (probably 10) behind us gave Ty another paper airplane. So sweet.
After mass, Ty finally got to go play with the Torrey kids. He and Maddie play so well together. They had fun running around while we met a few other people and chatted with Father John. He grew up in Vietnam, one of 10 children raised during the war. Really nice man. There is also a guy who looks like Santa Claus at the church, so Ty thought that was awesome. He wants to go back to church. :).

Marina.
We had a late dinner at the marina after church. We were the parents who bring their kid to the restaurant in her PJs…past her bedtime. Lily slept in her stroller, Ty played the video games. Nice evening.

Real Food!
Sunday morning we woke up and made a bunch of baby food to freeze for Lily – squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, and zucchini. Jay cooked a yummy brekky of bacon and eggs. And Lily ate rice cereal for the first time!!!! She did great. She seemed to like it, didn’t spit too much out, and so far doesn’t seem to have had any negative effects from it. Such a big girl!

2 Beaches.
What do you do when one beach isn’t enough? You go to two beaches. Why not? We went and checked out Palm Beach this morning. They have a pirate ship playground and the beach is very protected so there aren’t really any waves. It was great for Ty to go into the water without being afraid of the waves.

We needed to go pick up our Surf Club card at the Rainbow Beach Surf Club, which gave us a good excuse to grab lunch there. The views are phenomenal. It must be a great place to ride the waves because there was an endless stream of surfers running down the beach, catching a wave, and doing it all over again. We had heard the surfers were getting excited because there is a cyclone brewing out to sea that is expected to bring in some big waves and a bunch of the professional surfers.

*reality check* did I really just say all of that? Still have a hard time believing we are here, living in Australia.

Ty loves to play on the rocks and in the little pools that are formed when the tide goes out.

The rest of the evening should be pretty quiet. I am hoping everyone goes to bed a little early – the sun sucked all of my energy today. Hoping for a good week ahead!

G’day mates!

TGIF.
I have been feeling a little emotional the past few days, in a bit of a funk. Work has been stressful since Christmas break. I am feeling a little homesick. Ty has been talking about missing Bandit. I think Sherry’s visit in a few weeks will do us all some good. I can’t wait for a hug! In the meantime, I am just thankful it is the weekend!

6 Month Checkup.
Lily had her 6 month checkup on Friday. She tips the scales at just over 18 pounds and is 25.5 inches long. She is doing all of the things that a 6 month old should be able to do, so she is developing nicely. We have held out on solid foods (except for a couple tastes of ice cream and Vegemite), but we are going to give it a go this weekend. We picked up some rice cereal and I am going to mush up some carrots, squash, zucchini, and sweet potato. Enter super stinky diapers…..
She had to get a few vaccinations, which she took like a rock star and barely cried. I am expecting her to be extra cuddly tonight, which is just fine with me.
We saw the same doctor that checked out Ty when he was sick before Christmas. She is great – very competent, confident, great with the kids. She is moving to another clinic down the road but we will continue to see her for regular appointments. It was a much better experience than the 4 month appointment. Yay!

Australia Day.
There are heaps of Australia Day items sprinkled throughout the stores. Anything they can stick the Australian flag onto, they do. Today I couldn’t resist the temptation and picked up an Australian flags water bottle and an inflatable thong (going to leave you hanging on that one – pictures later).

Seapen.
A guy from the Seapen factory went and checked out the Seapen Jay bought to figure out what repairs/maintenance needs to be done on it before installation. He told Jay that we got the deal of the century. He said it just needs a good cleaning and they will check to see if it needs a new pump (it shouldn’t because the prior owner said he just had it replaced). So Jay scored a great deal again! Yay!!

Weekend Plans.
Saturday morning we have swim lessons and then we are going to pick up the paperwork for the boat. I have a hair appointment. Then we might try to go to church again. Ty has been wanting to go and we haven’t been around on the weekend since the Christmas puking episode. Sunday is beach day. Should be nice and relaxing!
