Aladdin.
He made it through the ENTIRE movie. I have no idea how – the kid was so stinking tired, but he toughed it out.

Airport.
We woke up early so we could be on the road by 6:00 to pick up Uncle Rickey at the airport. We waited for what seemed like forever. The sign we made for Rickey didn’t last too long. Ty wanted to draw on the iPad while we waited, but it was fun while it lasted.

He finally arrived!! We were all so excited to see him!

Everything went pretty smooth for him, just really super long. He kept saying, “I can’t get over how much water there is – 14 HOURS!”

Role Model.
Even though it was freezing (probably 60 degrees), Rick couldn’t wait to “role model” his new board shorts and flip flops.

Straddy.
We went to the marina to pick up groceries before heading out on the boat. Didn’t want to mess with having to rush home to get to the store. Then, we all put on our warm clothes and coats and went for a boat ride. The benefit of going out on the water when it is “freezing” in Australia is that nobody else goes out. The water was really smooth, despite the wind. The kids fell asleep on the ride out, so Rick and I got to ride in the bow. We were cruising along the Broadwater and saw heaps of dolphins!! There were probably a dozen or so – have never seen that many! So cool.

We got to Couran just in time to catch the last tram over to the surf side of the island. I think Rickey’s mind was blown. It really is the most beautiful beach. I thought it would be windy and cold, but it was actually the best day to be there. The water was just rolling in, nice, smooth waves – much calmer than normal. No wind. Cool temps, but warm sun. We found done great new shells. I think Rick could have stayed there all day.

20140504-192939.jpgUnfortunately we needed to hurry up and eat a quick late lunch, then roll out to beat the sunset. We made it, with not a lot of time to spare before the sun went down.

Rick was starting to feel the jet lag, so he called it a night around 6:30. I hope he is able to sleep all night! I’m about done, as well. I didn’t sleep well last night – too excited. I can hear my mother’s voice ringing in my mind as I hobble around the house tonight… “Take it easy – don’t hurt your back.” Too late… :(. We had a great day, so stinking happy to have my brother here. G’day mates!

Mr. Muscles

Bonds.
Ty was watching the video for his favorite song – I’m sexy and I know it – on Jay’s phone. After about 15 seconds he pulled his pants down, took off his shirt, and danced around in his little Bonds undies. I guess he can’t dance with clothes on. Lord help me…

Swim.
Saturday morning Ty had swim lessons. He did awesome with his back float and back swim. Everything else he mastered a while ago. Not sure what the teacher is waiting for to move him to the next level. Oh well, no rush. He is still enjoying it.

Gym.
We went to gymnastics after swimming. When we walked in, the girl at the front said, “Ty! You came back!” Jay was like, how did she remember him? And then the girl said, “Coach Jake has been telling everyone about Ty’s muscles all week.” So this is the second person who has commented on his muscles. I guess he’s a brut. Gets it from his mama.

Today he did balance beams, and an obstacle course with somersaults, jumps, and handstands. It looked like more fun than it sounds on paper. Ty got a t-shirt at gymnastics – his first of many sports shirts. :).

Cute.
Seriously. I don’t mean to brag or anything, but this kid is seriously cute.

Picnic.
We didn’t have time on Saturday to take the boat out for a ride, but we thought it would be fun to have a picnic on the boat. We needed to give it a good wipe down, anyway. Ty’s sandwich of choice: peanut butter and mayonnaise. I couldn’t talk him out if it. Gag.

Growth.
Lily has mastered a couple new tricks this week. She is waving at everyone and everything. Clapping is the coolest thing in the infant room at daycare. And she can hold her own bottle! So big!

Mullet.
Dirty hippie. Get a haircut.

20140503-144023.jpg

So he did. Can’t really tell a difference. I think that short, nice haircuts on boys are non-existent here. Dude.

Bed.
We picked up a memory foam mattress topper today. Best. Purchase. Ever. I should have done that 6 months ago. This rental mattress (with no box spring because I don’t think they have those here) just wasn’t cutting it. I’m trying anything and everything to fix my back. Which, by the way, isn’t feeling too bad on Saturday afternoon. Dr suggested physio (which I think is physical therapy) or acupuncture. If it’s not feeling better in 2 weeks, she will refer me to a surgeon.

Rickey.
Uncle Rickey has made it to LA. He has a short layover, and then he is getting on the big mamma-jamma airplane and crossing the mighty ocean. Fun fact: He’s never seen the ocean. His first sighting will be from a birds-eye view. I can’t wait to show him the beach at South Stradbroke. The down side is that every beach after that will be a disappointment. :). I don’t know who is more excited – me or Ty. First thing this morning Ty was asking when it will be dark again. I think he just wants it to be tomorrow ASAP. I have heard about a hundred times in the past week “when will uncle Rickey be here?” Soon, buddy. :).

Aladdin.
Ty didn’t take a nap today. His teacher said that he has been skipping it this week – seems to have outgrown it. So we didn’t force it on him today, but had quiet time instead. By 5:00 he was staring off into space, but we rejuvenated him with a bit of a chocolate muffin (great parenting, I know). At 6:30 Aladdin was due to come on the Disney channel, so we hurried up, got him showered up (and cleaned the lasagna off of Lily’s head and toes) and all crawled in the big bed to watch the movie. How long do you think he will last? $5 AUD to whoever comes closest…lines open now.

Back Attack

Warning. Not a fun blog. Medical update, some whining to follow…

X-ray.
I had a massage Sunday evening and was given advice to rest on Monday, if at all possible, to give my back a chance to heal. I took her advice and scheduled a doctor appointment for Monday afternoon. Doctor ordered an x-ray, which I did right away, and told me to use a medicated cream and ibuprofen to ease the pain. I haven’t had x-rays very often, but I thought it was strange that the clinic handed me an envelope with the x-rays, along with a little card that has a website, user id, and password to view my x-rays online. Kind if cool. Not that I can make any sense out of them by looking at them.

Work.
Tuesday I really wanted to get back to work. I was facilitating a meeting that I really did not want to postpone, so I thought I would give it a go. An hour and a half of sitting in my gargantuan chair that might be too big for a gorilla, and I was in agony. Several times I had to choke back tears (so not cool to cry at work). I hobbled around and survived the day. Barely. I requested a new chair, and was told I need a doctor’s note with a suggestion on what needs to happen at the office to help. I haven’t had to get a doctor’s note for anything since I was in high school, so I found that a bit frustrating, but so be it. I will get a note, if that is what it takes.

That night I was pretty much useless. As soon as Jay was home and the kids were fed, it was off to bed to lay on my heating pad.

Wednesday.
I wanted to go back to work on Wednesday (more fun meetings – I know, I’m a nerd), but Jay refused to let me go. I think he is about at his limit as he is in charge of all of the heavy lifting/chasing Lily/getting up at night to lift her out of her crib/etc. He needs me to be healthy, so I obeyed his commands. I had to get a doctor note anyway, so I scheduled an appointment to pay the doctor another $65 so she could write the HR department a note telling them that, hello, my chair is no bueno.

And so the doctor did just that. She hadn’t had a chance yet to review the x-ray results, so she pulled them up and let me know the verdict.
The X-ray shows severe degeneration of my lower spine, and an abnormal shifting. She referred to it as a type of arthritis. She prescribed a pain killer, and told me to get a CT scan today. She also suggested that I don’t go to work for at least one more day to try to get the inflammation and pain under control. She said depending on the CT scan results, she may refer me to a back surgeon. :(. I might cry. The thought of any type of surgery in a foreign country terrifies me. Without my mom. Ugh.

So I had my CT scan and am now just waiting to hear what the results are.

Annoying.
I am finding the mental struggle with this situation almost as hard as the physical. I hate feeling useless, hate that I cannot hold my baby, hate that I am dumping all of this extra stress on Jay – especially during quarter end, hate that when I pick up the kids we sit on the couch in front of the TV and wait for dad to come home because I am afraid that I may have to bend over to pick up Lily, hate that I can’t concentrate on work, hate that I hurt and can’t seem to shake it. Ty would say, “mom, we don’t say hate” but in this case, I really really really don’t like the situation. If this is at all what it feels like to grow old, ugh….

Sorry for that. I tend to get angry when I am in pain for days on end. 😦

CT Results.
I haven’t talked to the doctor about my Ct results but I could view them online. Thursday evening. It says I have severe degenerative disc disease and disc osteophyte complex. My brief google search eases my concerns a bit – might not be as bad as it sounds – but I am hoping to hear from the doctor tomorrow to discuss next steps. I stayed home from work and rested in the morning, then worked in the afternoon – standing at the kitchen counter. I felt the best I had in a week, but by the end of the day my back just felt tired.

On a positive note.
In spite of my misery, there have been some positive things this week. Jay has had a pretty good closing, so he has thankfully been able to get home by 6:30 most nights this week, with only a bit of working from home at night. Yay!

Ty was carrying around Jay’s phone, with “I’m sexy and I know it” cranked up as loud as the phone can go, dancing around the house in his undies, showing us his “cool moves”. God I love that kid.

And last, but not least, we received another Christmas card in the mail today!! Yay for Christmas cards – and for friends that are willing to pay the extra postage to mail them overseas. I would be totally happy receiving Christmas cards staggered throughout the entire year. There is definitely not a rule against sending them to us in a month other than Nov-Jan. :). Thank you Zimmerman’s!!
