Busy Week.
This week was a busy one. Jay had month end, and I had heaps going on. It was the normal rush rush rush when I got home every night. Having Riley around to help with the kids was really nice. During the days, Riley watched sports, went on buggy rides, fished (nothing yet), went to the marina. He said he isn’t bored yet – hoping he can keep that up. He cooked our pasta dinner one night. It was so nice to come home and have dinner on the table. Thanks Riley!!

Friday night we fed the kids and went to the marina for a late dinner. Ty curled up in the chair under a couple blankies and fell asleep (shortly after he pushed too many buttons on my phone and caused it to restart). Lily snuggled up with dad and crashed, then spent the rest of the evening sleeping in her stroller. We had a lovely dinner. So nice.

Sea World.
Saturday morning we had swim lessons. It was the new coach again. He did better than last week, but still seems to not be doing as well as he did with the last coach. It’s good for him to have to adjust, but he must have been really thrown about having a different coach. She did say that he is close to moving on.

After swimming, it was time for gymnastics. He had a great time. So fun to watch him listen, play, and learn.

After a quick stop at the house, we headed to Sea World. We haven’t been there since we first moved here. We have a season pass, so we thought we better get some more use out of it. Unfortunately it was kind of a yucky day – wet & rainy. But it didn’t spoil our fun too much. The dolphin show was amazing. Ty’s favorite part was when the trainer was pushed around the lagoon super fast by the dolphin, and then he stood up on 2 dolphins noses. It was awesome. Lots of cool tricks – backflips, twists, jumps over boats. Lily was even clapping at the show.

We spent quite a bit of time in the underwater viewing area. So cool to see the sharks, turtles, rays, and other fish. They had a separate area that was a coral reef – gave us a taste of what we will see in a couple weeks when we go to Port Douglas and snorkel at the Great Barrier Reef. Side note on this…the humpback whales are starting to appear on their migration up the coast. The boat that is going to take us out to the reef says our chances of seeing a whale on the way to the reef is high, especially in June!!!!!! I can’t wait!!

We saw a polar bear, a 3D movie about Sponge Bob Square Pants, and had lunch overlooking a pond full of dolphins playing with balls. They were actually throwing the balls up to people standing alongside the water. Have I mentioned how much I love dolphins?

Prawns.
We stopped by the trawler prawn market on the way home. There were probably a dozen shrimp boats docked in a market area. I have heard about this place but haven’t given it a shot yet. Tonight is the night to try my hand at cleaning prawns. They are already cooked, so I just have to “rip the head off, peel the skin, and eat it” according to the fisherman that sold them to me. I’m a little nervous, but it doesn’t get any fresher than this, so I’m going to try. I’ll let you know tomorrow how it goes.

Aloe.
Just wanted to share this picture of my aloe plant at my front door. It has turned a really pretty yellow/orange color. I think it is supposed to do this, although based on my black thumb, it could very well be dying. In any case, it is pretty!

Relax.
Since we walked about 10 miles today, we are resting a bit this evening. Ty is watching a movie, Lily is playing in the toy room, and the big boys went to the grocery store. Looking forward to a yummy dinner tonight!

Happy birthday Ty!

May 25, 2010.
Jay and I woke anxiously after a restless night, full of excitement and nerves. After 9 long months, it was finally time to meet the sweet baby boy that I had been hauling around in my belly. I had a scheduled c-section since he was breach (thank god – I had zero interest in experiencing labor). It was love at first sight. Ty Allen Shearer came into our lives, changing it forever. He has brought joy to everyone he comes across, his handsome good looks and silly, yet sweet, personality make him a natural charmer. He is smart, funny, a constant negotiator. “Just one more book.” “Just 2 more minutes.” “Dad, how ’bout we switch, k.” Sunday was Ty’s 4th birthday. We had a great day celebrating.

Presents.
Ty came running into our room on cue at 5:00 am, ready to open presents. We tested his patience throughout the morning as we FaceTimed some family back home while he opened each present, and then we played with each one a while before opening the next one. He got lots of fun things – Legos, fishing gear, a new Iowa state hat, some clothes, a Spider-Man cape, pirate hat, Spider-man motorcycle, remote control car, movies, and a few other things that are not coming to mind right away. We spent the morning building Legos, then we had to run to the store. Ty insisted on wearing his new Superman shirt and Spider-Man cape to the grocery store. As soon as we got home it was rush rush rush to eat lunch and get ready to go to his party.

Flipout.
The Torrey’s met us at a new indoor trampoline park called Flipout. It wasn’t nearly as nice as the one in Des Moines, but it served its purpose. The jumpers all were officially exhausted, sweaty and stinky at the end of an hour of jumping. Ty was doing flips – landing on his bum by the end of the day. After our time was up, Ty opened more presents. The kids know exactly what Ty likes from playing at their house. Lego Batman, an airplane, matchbox cars, and a teenage mutant ninja turtle pillow pet. :). Ty loves everything! Then it was time for cake. A wife of a coworker bakes cakes and she made an awesome one for Ty. Spider-Man!! Yum.

Frozen.
When we got home, everyone washed the stink off and we did a quick photo shoot. Ever since Ty was born, I have taken a picture of him with his sock monkey on milestone dates. I couldn’t let his 4th birthday pass by without a picture. The lighting wasn’t great – it was dark, but they turned out OK. Riley cooked us a delicious steak dinner. I had made my first batch of potato salad ever (needed a taste of home) and it went well with the steaks, green beans, and sautéed mushrooms. Then it was movie time. Memaw sent a few movies over – Frozen was one of them. Lily was asleep in one arm, Ty was cuddled up into my other arm. Best movie night ever. Love my babies.

Goodnight?
Friday night around 7:00 Riley got off the couch and went to the bathroom. He never returned. Jay described him as the typical college kid, sneaking off to pass out. I figured he didn’t intend to go to bed, but couldn’t resist the temptation when he saw his bed. Jet lag wins again.

Swim.
Saturday morning we went to swim lessons and found out that Ty’s coach is leaving, so he had a different coach. I think we went backwards about 4 weeks – she has a different approach and he was a bit confused, I think. He still did OK, but not nearly as good as he has in prior weeks.

Gymnastics.
Ty nailed the balance beam at gymnastics. Must be due to all of his practicing at home. 🙂

Boats.
The boys both had hair cuts at the marina. We all rode over together so that we could walk to Sanctuary Cove when they were done. Our neighborhood is right next to it, but the 2 neighborhoods have not worked out a way to allow buggies to go from one to the other. Kind of lame because it would be so easy. So we parked the buggy at the marina, put Lily in the stroller, and hoofed it over to sanctuary cove. I haven’t had that much exercise in a long time. 20140524-213513-77713951.jpg
We walked through a big exhibitor tent and then headed out to take a look at the big boats. Unfortunately unless you were a potential buyer, they wouldn’t allow us on the really super big boats. But, we were still able to go on quite a few $1M + boats. There were some pretty amazing ones, but at the end of the day, I still like our boat the best. It suits us really well (and was a whole heck of a lot cheaper). Ty’s favorite boat was a giant police boat. Maybe someday he will be a police boat captain. That would be pretty cool.

Magic.
In the afternoon, they had a free magic show where Matt Hollywood did one pretty cool effect. I was standing next to one of his assistants and she said that there was a show that night and there were still plenty of tickets left. We have been wanting to see a show for quite a while but every time we try to go , they are sold out. Apparently most people thought that the boat show would interfere, which it didn’t, so we were able to go Saturday night. What a great way to end Ty’s 3rd year. He was pretty amazed at all of the tricks. He found one of the playing cards from the show on the ground and got Matt to autograph it. While we were waiting in line to get the autograph, Ty was turning the card back and forth – I think he was practicing magic. Then when we got home, he got out a sharpie and was autographing some random pieces of paper. :). Happy last data of being a 3 year old!!

Words.
Fall pregnant = get pregnant. Not sure where the “falling” part comes from. I guess you fall in love. And often times getting pregnant is what happens next, so I guess it sort of makes sense? Hmm.
Baddies = the bad guys.

Chips.
One would never walk into a Subway in the US and not have a plethora of chips to choose from. However, a Subway employee in Australia looks at you like you are from Mars if you ask for a bag of chips to go with your sandwich. A sandwich just isn’t the same without that salty yummy goodness accompanying it…

Emmy.
Today’s mail had 2 fantastically fun envelopes. Baby Emmy sent the most adorable baby announcement (ok, they are all adorable, but really, hers is super cute). And then Emmy’s mom sent a separate thank you note (Terra, you totally could have combined them to save on postage but we feel really special that you sent them separate). Have I mentioned how much I love getting real mail? I can always count on Emmy’s mom to write updates on Facebook in the middle of my day (middle of her night). One might think that I sent a prenatal message to little miss Emma to tell her to make sure she wakes up at all hours of the night so that when we move down under her mom can keep me company. But I swear I didn’t… Really.

And speaking of babies keeping moms up, I think that Courtney needs to get a smart phone and check her Facebook a little more often. Just saying…

Riley!!!!
Jay picked up Riley at the airport at 5:00 AM on Friday morning!!! Jay took the day off and showed him around. They went to Surfers Paradise to walk on the beach, and took the boat over to Tipplers for lunch. They saw dolphins – came right up next to the boat. Riley slept for 12 of the 14 hour flight so he seems to be doing pretty well with the jet lag. We have a fun month ahead of us!! Jay booked our flights to the Great Barrier Reef in a couple weeks. I can’t wait for that!
20140523-183426-66866542.jpg
Riley arrived with a suitcase full of goodies. Birthday presents for Ty, sweatpants (it is pretty much freezing here you know), shirts for Jay, the most adorable swimsuit/hat/cover up for Lily, and a whole pile of loot from Berkshire Hathaway. Thanks Memaw and Papa!!

Snail.
Check out the giant snail that was creeping along our patio. “I can’t be late for my first day of school!”

This is the cuteness that is Lily. This amount of adorableness is banned in most countries.

Chair.
Have I mentioned that I got a new chair this week? And weird, my back coincidentally has felt great ever since. Thank goodness I have some relief!! I am hoping it stays this way for a while. I have zero time for another bed-ridden week.

More to come throughout the weekends adventures!!

Happy Hump Day!

Seashells.
I can finally tell the story about the fun adventure Rick and I had the last day he was in Australia. He had been looking for the perfect souvenir for Haley the whole time he was here, but hadn’t had any luck. He had an idea on our last day to gather a bunch of shells and make a necklace or bracelet for her. So we were on the hunt to find the perfect shells. He found one really neat, shiny one and thought it would make a really pretty pendant. I was like, um, you fly out tomorrow morning, and I’m not so sure we have quite the right tools to do this, but things usually just fall into place for Rick. So I didn’t stress too much. We left the beach and he said he wanted to find a chain, so we headed up the coast, keeping our eyes out for a jeweler. We passed up a couple sketch places and decided Surfers would likely have jewelers and lunch.
After a yummy meal, we started walking around the shops. One jeweler said he couldn’t help, but he directed us to this little Chinese man down a dark alley that does jewelry repairs. After a little bit of translation issues, we were finally able to convey what we wanted to have done. The man drilled a hole into the shell (was harder than it looked), put a chain on it, and polished it up. It looked fantastic! Such a fun gift – I hope Haley loved it!

Artist.
Some of Ty’s artwork was sent home from school on Monday. I quite like his style, but question his captions…
“I made footprints from dogs.”

20140519-183649.jpg
“I painted the Easter Bunny’s stuff.”

Girls.
Monday was not a good day for the Shearer girls. My back flared back up – I think that it was feeling pretty good this weekend and I might have overdone it. I could barely move this morning – sitting and standing both hurt, so I stayed home and alternated between the two. I managed to get a decent amount of work done, too, which was nice.
Lily’s teacher called and said that se was having a really rough day. She rarely has a bad day, so when she showed signs of discomfort, her teachers were concerned and called to see if we wanted to come get her earlier. Want to? Yes. Could I? Ugh. This is the worst part. My daughter needed me, just wanted to cuddle with mama, but I was scared that if I got her before Jay was ready to come home, she would need me to carry her. :(. I knew my back couldn’t handle it. I waited as long as I could stand the guilt before going to pick up the kids. Ty was a big help, and Lily slept in her swing until Jay got home. Snoring. Poor thing is drooling, snoring, constant runny nose, and in pain. :(.

Words.
Smoco = break (smoke & coffee)
Pluto pop = corn dog

Better.
Tuesday and Wednesday were better for the girls. Lily seems to have gotten past the super painful part of getting her new teeth. My back has felt better the past couple of days – but I am taking it pretty easy. Great news, though…I got my new chair!! Unfortunately it is still too big for me, so they are replacing it with an even smaller and shorter model in the next couple if days. Thank you, Geisler-side, for my midget legs.

Riley.
Riley gets on a plane on his Wednesday and will arrive in Australia at 5:00 AM in Friday (Australia time), which is 2:00 PM on Thursday in the US. I am spelling this out for my mom who still struggles with this time zone thing. :). We are sooooo excited for him to arrive! He will be here for just about a month – so we should have some fun times ahead!

Under 8s.
This week has been “Under 8’s” week in Australia. Well, I think it is a national thing, but it is quite possible that it is just a thing at our daycare. On Monday the kids got to wear their pajamas to school. Ty thought that was pretty silly! Mondays are his News Day, so he brought his camera that Sundie, Brad, and Lucia gave him. Judging by the pictures, it looks like all of the kids had fun snapping photos of each other. The daycare has a rule against posting pictures of other kids on social media, so I can’t share them.

Tuesday was kite making day for Ty, and Grandparents Day for Lily. :(. I know that her grandparents would have loved to have been there, but there are many more in the future to attend.

Wednesday was costume day. Ty went as Bob the Builder, complete with a hard hat and safety goggles (safety first!). Lily has outgrown her bunny costume, so she got to be an Iowa State cheerleader. So cute! And nope, I didn’t take pictures. Sorry!

Have a great rest of the week!

10 Months!
Lily is 10 months old now. She is a busy little thing, always on the go. She wants to be wherever her brother is, or in the pantry. This little Chica likes to eat. She will take down anything within reach…unfortunately not always food items. She rarely complains about anything, only exceptions are when she runs out of food or is getting a new tooth. She still likes to eat puréed veggies, but has started eating fruit pieces, chicken, ham, pancakes (she loves pancakes), Mac and cheese. Pretty much anything. She says a few words: dada, mumma, Ty, baba, and mwump (kissing noise). She waves, blows kisses, “walks” along the furniture. Always so happy. It’s been a wonderful 10 months – can’t remember what life was like before Lily.

Sports.
Saturday morning Ty had swimming and gymnastics. They tried to swim the long way again. Ty is so close. He needs to keep his face looking at the ground and keep his legs up towards the top of the water, but he is really doing well. Just needs more practice.
After swimming we went to gymnastics. More fun times were had in the gym.
Jay and the kids went and picked up our giant shipment of Pampers diapers (we got a little excited when we saw that Groupon come through). 750 diapers later, and I don’t think we will have to buy more in Australia. :).
I had a hair appointment. The rest of Saturday was spent tooling around on the buggy and doing some chores.

Gym.
Jay has been thinking about joining a gym since we moved here but the hours of the one nearby weren’t convenient. The gym within our neighborhood (5 minute buggy ride) just changed its hours to 24/7. They have a lot of nice equipment, including a combat course. Jay went ahead and got signed up, and went over there after me and the kids went to bed Saturday night. It gives him something to do after his lame wife falls asleep at 8:30.

Snowy River.
Saturday night we watched The Man From Snowy River. Still one of the best movies of all time. It was fun to see Ty taking it all in. Of course his favorite scene was the brawl in the bunkhouse. “Whoa! That was awesome!” Such a boy… As long as he only watches fights on TV and never gets into one…

Teeth.
Lily is getting 2 new teeth – the top ones that have been threatening to arrive for the past 7 months are now here. Unfortunately they come with a runny nose and a sleepless couple of nights. How many more to go???

Snails.
Nana’s and Memaw’s…you should probably skip this next section…

There were 2 large snails on our patio Sunday morning. They appeared to be “stuck” together, so one can imagine what they were up to. (Google image mating snails for a visual – confirms our suspicions). So anyway, kind of a random start to the morning. We were rushing around to get things ready for the day. Jay was hauling a load of stuff down to the boat, and I was finishing getting ready upstairs. Ty and Lily were playing downstairs. A thought crossed my mind…”if Lily gets out on the patio, she will go straight to those snails.” So I go downstairs, and see that Ty had gone outside and left the patio door open. And Lily had followed him… It was like I was in slow motion. I saw her, saw what she had in her hands, and that her hands were in her mouth (ewwwwww!!!!!) and shouted “Noooooooooo!!!!!” I ran outside, pulled the mating snails out of her mouth, threw them on the ground, and had to fight to control the vomit that was attempting to come into my mouth. Jay, in his usual calm manner, realized what had happened, and looked at me from the boat. “You know that is a delicacy in some countries.”

Picnic.
A bunch of people from work were getting together at a park down the coast on Sunday morning. We thought it would be fun to take the boat down there. We headed out and about 20 minutes in, the clouds that were threatening to ruin our trip opened up. Ugh. Third time we have been out in the boat in the rain. Thankfully it didn’t last long. Aside from being a little chilly, we had a nice time at the picnic. Ty had a blast playing with the other kids. He had taken a 20 minute nap on the way to the park, and slept most of the way home. Lily also slept the whole way home. It was a peaceful little afternoon. Hoping for a restful Sunday night before the work week kicks back in.

Riley.
Jay’s nephew, Riley, flies in on Friday morning! Yay!! We are all pretty excited to have another visitor. :).

This Episode is Brought to You By the Letter P

p.p.p. P!!!
This week’s letter at Ty’s school was the letter P. In true psychic form (that he gets from Nana), his first P word at school was “p.p.p.presents!” Much to his surprise, when he got home he saw many presents waiting for him.

P is for Practice.
What do you get when you cross a sports wagon, Bunnings, and 2 bored blokes? A balance beam!

20140512-194925.jpg

20140512-194958.jpg

P.p.p.pole!
Rickey bought Ty an early birthday present – a fishing pole and tacklebox. I was really impressed with Ty’s patience and determination as he practiced for a long time in the yard. I got a bit misty-eyed as I watched Rick patiently teaching Ty how to cast. Grandpa Rick would have been proud.

20140514-184402.jpg

20140514-184456.jpg

20140514-184523.jpg

Passed out.
A picture says a thousand words.

20140514-184645.jpg

Play day.
The big boys went fishing Monday afternoon. Rick caught a catfish (I think he is still trying to wipe the slime off his hands). Jay “caught” a giant crab, but the crab let go before Jay could reel him in.

20140514-185034.jpg

Prawns.
Rick had been using frozen prawns as bait. When the boys were working on the boat, Rick dropped a line in the water because one of the poles still had bait on it. He set the pole down on the dock, went inside to grab something, and when he walked outside they heard “plunk!” “Zzzzz!” And that was the end of the pole we found by the tree…

Perfect.
I spent the day with Rick on Tuesday. It was the perfect day to play hookie (yes, I took a vacation day – didn’t just call in crook). We went shopping for a couple souvenirs, bought a replacement fishing pole, and went to Tallebudgera beach. I wanted him to try stand up paddle boarding, but realized they only do that on the weekends there. The beach was basically deserted, except for a few groups of kids that appeared to be in a PE class on the beach. We wandered down the beach, looking for sea shells (Rick’s favorite new activity). As we walked along, we noticed some black stuff in the water. We figured it was either rocks or seaweed. We kept on walking and saw a few more areas of the same thing. We got down to the “end” of the beach (the beaches are endless here – it was more of a rocky outlet) and there were heaps of shells. We collected a ton of them. There was another giant pile of the black stuff in the water, and there were two guys snorkeling in the middle of it. A guy with a net and bucket came down and said they were schools of bait fish. Rick had never snorkeled, so we had brought our gear just in case. We quickly grabbed them and jumped in. The water wasn’t too cold (not exactly warm though), however the wind outside of the water was more than a little chilly. We put our faces under water and swam out just a little way (hands still touched bottom) to the fish. I have never seen so many fish. Ever. There were thousands of them, maybe millions, just swimming around in circles. They were probably 2-4″ long, silver bellies, black backs. So stinking cool. Rick had a hard time avoiding a panic attack when he went under, but he can at least say he has sort of snorkeled. We helped the fisherman put the fish in his bucket. And of course made a few friends who had come down to check it out (because that’s what Rick does everywhere he goes). One guy told us that from June to October the whales migrate up and down the coastline. THOUSANDS of whales. I cannot wait to see that!!

20140515-190438.jpg

20140515-190507.jpg

Paradise.
We were both getting pretty hungry, and Rick wanted to try to find some things for one more souvenir (which I will blog about after it has been delivered – fun story), so we went back to Surfers Paradise. We had lunch with a great view. Such a fun day. I don’t think I have ever spent so much time with just my brother. I will never forget these past couple of weeks.

20140515-190725.jpg

Port (air).
Wednesday morning I took Rick to the airport. I hate saying goodbye to people. Rick, thank you so much for suffering through the horribly long flights and living our crazy life for a couple weeks. We miss you already!

Package.
I purposefully have not blogged about something I have been stressing over for a couple months, but since my lovely husband posted a picture on Facebook, I thought I better explain. I didn’t want to make any readers uncomfortable, especially the dudes, but it appears as though I don’t have any choice. I haven’t really had to worry about this because I have been nursing Lily, but now that I am down to one feed a day, I have started shopping around for some female necessities, if you know what I mean. I had not seen my favorite brand, but was trying to find an alternative. The aisles are stocked full of pads (ew!) and tampons with no applicator, which is basically a cotton ball (quadruple ew!!). When I was at the doctors office dealing with my back issues, I asked the doctor if she knows where I could find tampons with applicators. She had gone to med school in the US so I knew she would know what I was talking about. I didn’t even finish my sentence and she blurted out, “I KNOW!! They don’t have them here!” WHAT?!?!? It was a good thing I was at the doctors office because I nearly had a panic attack. So I can deal with a different kind of conditioner. I can deal with a different kind of toothpaste. I can deal with lots of different food. I can deal with a lot of things. But I CANNOT deal with this.
Before I hyperventilated and started the process to ship the family back to the US, I sent my sister a note. “Dear Jess. Send tampons ASAP. A 2 year supply. Love, Nic”. Or something like that. Jess to the rescue!! She (and the poor guys that work in the packaging area of her work) express mailed a package with tampons and a few other things for Jay, me, and the kids. Sister #2, Em, is going to buy a bunch of them using the dog fund and Jess will send another package later. And I suppose it won’t be long before brother, Rick, starts importing tampons into Australia and makes billions. Australia…the land of opportunity… I am never going to be able to look at another Australian female the same again. EWWWW!!!!!

Recovery.
We thought Lefty’s was fun while we were there, but we didn’t realize how fun it was until Sunday. We left the bar a little after 11:00. Caught the midnight train to the Gold Coast, which dropped us off at the station at 1:00. By the time we drove from the station to home and chatted with Miss Steph a while about the kids, it was nearly 2:00 before I got my PJs on. And then, of course, Lily decided she didn’t want to sleep anymore. I brought her into bed with us, gave her a bottle, but she tossed and turned and grabbed and kicked and whined for EVER before falling asleep. I had tried to wake Jay to take over, but he messed up his back (great…) and had taken a pain killer that knocked him out. I was up until after 3:00 and kept getting woken up by wiggle worm. Thankfully the kids slept until almost 7:00, and them since it was Mothers Day, Jay took the kids downstairs and let me sleep until 8:00.

Mother’s Day.
Jay and the kids made me an awesome Mother’s Day card(board). Jay made eggs and pancakes. Rick was feeling the pain probably the worst out of all of us. As we were talking about options of things to do, he suggested just vegging out, which was exactly what I wanted to do but didn’t want to waste a vacation day. We went for a little morning swim, but it was a bit chilly so we didn’t last too long.

20140511-191721.jpg

Rick had wanted to buy some shrimp off of the shrimp boat, so we drove to Sanctuary Cove to see if the trawler had arrived. It was there, but it was unfortunately sold out. :(. The restaurants were all booked out with reservations for Mothers Day, so we ate ice cream to hold us over. We went to the grocery store and picked up some stuff to grill. I made an awesome discovery while I was at the IGA in Sanctuary Cove. They have Franks Red Hot Sauce, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Pop Tarts, and Nerds. Score.

BBQ.
I made guacamole, and Jay made buffalo chicken dip when we got home. The boys marinated some pork chops. Rick, Lily and I all took a little nap. When we woke, Rick helped Ty plant my Mother’s Day plant in the garden. :). Rick grilled steak, pork chops, and veggies – delicious!

After dinner we put together a puzzle and took it easy. Have a great week!

Last Blog Update.
I forgot to attach some pictures to the last blog from Currumbin.

Tuesday.
Jay and I had to go to work on Tuesday, so Rick was on his own. He went to the marina in the morning, talked to a guy about fishing. He didn’t stay long because a guy was coming to fix the snaps on the buggy rain cover. Rick chatted with him and learned that if you don’t have any bait (which we didn’t) you can use a piece f a plastic bag on your hook. Well, nothing else to do, so he gave it a shot off the dock. Don’t get too excited – it didn’t work. Not saying it would never work, just didn’t that time. He had lunch at the marina, tried to fix the speedometer on the boat, did laundry, picked up the house, fiddled around.

Georgia.
Tuesday night we went to the marina for dinner. Ty quickly made a friend named Georgia. They were playing and having a great time. Then Ty comes over to our table, all goo-goo-eyed and said, “she is totally awesome. And hilarious.” And then when she was leaving, he got all panicky and blurted out, “TOYS! Do you have toys? Like what kind of toys?” For those of you that don’t know the language, that is toddler for “what’s your number?” As she was leaving, he saw the Dalmatian stuffed dog he won in the claw machine (he ALWAYS wins) and said, “can I give that to her?” Jay and Ty told him he better hurry. So he sprinted over and caught her just as she was leaving. Phew. That was a close one. I think he was really smitten…

Wednesday.
Jay stayed home with Rick on Wednesday. Of course they went out on the boat, and once again I had to see pictures of them on the boat while I was sitting at my desk. They cruised over to Tipplers and beached the boat. The plan was to have lunch but the restaurant was closed. They walked over to the surf side of the island and walked the beach, looking for sea shells. There was only one other person on the beach for miles. They were getting hungry so they tried to go down towards Surfers Paradise. We haven’t had much luck getting down there in the past, as the big boats cruise that way and make the water too rough. Since it was the middle of the week, there weren’t many people out, so the water was fine. They docked and ate at Marina Mirage. Jay took Rick into the Versace Palazzio hotel. Pretty fancy.

20140510-091135.jpg
Jay had picked up some fishing tackle, so they attempted to catch some fish, but did more casting than fishing. Got skunked. As soon as I got home with the kids, Ty wanted to go down to the dock and try to catch some fish. He lasted about 5 minutes, but it was cute to see him try.

Thursday.
Rick had to entertain himself again on Thursday while Jay and I went to work. He trimmed our hedges, went grocery shopping, and chatted with the owner of one of the marina restaurants. The guy, John, told him to come back that night for the live music (guy and a guitar) and Rick could sing a few songs. So, when we got home we got the kids bathed and went to Red Rock for a later than normal dinner. Ty must have used up all of his energy at school that day because he wanted to lay down on the buggy ride to the marina. And he sat in his chair at the restaurant with a 10 mile stare. It wasn’t long before he was about to crash, so we pushed 2 chairs together and covered him with a blanky. He was out by 7:00 – before dinner arrived. Lily drank her bottle and fell asleep. So for the first time ever, both kids were asleep at dinner and we had a normal, uninterrupted dinner. Ty is in here somewhere…

Copenhagen.
John wasn’t at the restaurant so Rick didn’t get to play, but he made friends with one of the waiters. He is a German/American and asked Rick if he had a “skoals ring” in his pocket. Apparently chewing tobacco is hard to come by here – so Rick offered him a dip. His eyes got big, he looked around and said, “Really? I can’t do it right here.” So he took the can back to the kitchen and came back happy as. So then, of course, Rick’s wheels start spinning and the rest of the meal was spent figuring out how we can become millionaires by importing tobacco. Just need to figure out what is legal and what isn’t. :).

Rick had been struggling to find ways to keep himself entertained, until he saw Ty’s big box of Legos. He built a ship for Ty, so when we got home we had to test it out. After a bit of re-engineering, it floats!

Cattle.
One of the benefits of working for an agricultural company – we had an opportunity to visit a cattle operation. They own over a million acres throughout Queensland. We had the pleasure of seeing the feedlot, where they run 10,000 head through 4 times a year. They also do some crop farming on the land surrounding the feedlot. We watched a cotton picker harvesting the crop. I didn’t get a chance to take many pictures – was too busy taking it all in to think about grabbing the camera. We also got a quick tour of one of our largest dealerships in Toowoomba. It was a really pretty drive. A lot of it reminded me of different parts of the US: Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota. One of the better days of “work” I have had, and Rick got to enjoy it, as well.

20140511-000827.jpg

Expats.
We recently found out that another family is moving to Australia in a couple months. I have worked with Brian in the past during my Treasury days. They were here doing a house hunting trip, so we invited them over for dinner. They have narrowed their search down to a couple places – all within buggy distance away. They have 3 kids, the youngest is Ty’s age. We are excited for them to come!

Beaches.
Saturday morning we had swim lessons and gymnastics. At swimming, the instructor unhooked the rope separating 2 smaller areas in the pool and had the kids try to swim the whole way. Ty couldn’t quite do it. She told us later that she did that to see if Ty is ready to move to the next level, and he just wasn’t quite there. So close!

We then headed down the coast to a place called Kingscliffe Beach. We thought we might be able to snorkel, but it was too cold and didn’t look like it would be great for seeing many fish. So after letting Ty play in the playground equipment, we decided to go up to our favorite beach – Rainbow Bay. Rick wanted to stop and see the Girls from Snowy River one more time, and he also wanted to go walk out on the big rocks that break the surf. We walked into the Surf Club and the mom from Snowy River got all excited and flustered. Wasn’t long before she came over to him with 2 Snapper Rocks t-shirts. She asked him if he wanted black or white, then just gave him both. Such a charmer. Two for the price of none.

The boys went out pretty far into the ocean this time. Far enough that the waves were picking them up. They found a rock pool and Ty, who earlier in the day said he didn’t want to get wet and therefore didn’t put on board shorts, wanted to join them. He didn’t want to go in in his mesh shorts, so he kicked them off and jumped in wearing just his undies. Who brought the bogan to the beach??? He had fun, though. Lily spent most of the day crawling on the beach, only trying to sneak in a handful of sand a few times. :). Fun day!

Leftys.
Saturday night we asked Miss Steph to come watch the kids so the big kids could go play. We took the train into the city and went to Lefty’s Old a Time Music Hall. The place was awesome. Kind of had an old speak-easy feel about it. Not real big, but a long bar, a balcony area, and a live band. It was rhythm & blues, so I wasn’t familiar with most of the songs, but we still had a good time. I kept the dancing to a minimum to spare my back any trouble, but I did dance with a couple blokes that Rick had quickly befriended. Twenty minutes after we arrived, some chic came up and said, “so I hear you are from Wyoming.” And then later another chic came up and asked “who the mate in the Stetson is.” He doesn’t even try, people just swarm around him. Fun to watch. :). These pictures were taken early on. By the time we left it was packed.

Now it is about 12:30 in the morning and we are on the train back down to the Gold Coast. Rick’s asleep, and I am about to crash. Apologies for the delay in getting this out, but we have been a little busy… 🙂

Crappy Day.
Today was anything but crappy, but it was full of it.

We all got up early and got ready for the fun day ahead. We all dropped off the kids at daycare, Jay went to work, and Rick and I drove down to Currumbin. We timed it perfectly so that we arrived right at 8:00 – just in time for the Lorikeet feeding. I have seen this event once before, but it was an afternoon feeding and there were tons of people, and not many birds. Today, we learned that the early bird gets the worm. There was nobody there when we got there, so we literally had a hundred wild lorikeets (at least) clawing their way all over themselves and us to get to the tray of brekky Rick and I were holding in front of us. I was not mentally prepared for what was going to happen. I didn’t realize that they were going to land on my head, dig their claws into my arms and scalp, and screech in my ear. I did not realize they were going to dangle off of Rick’s cowboy hat, and poo all over everything. I did not realize I was going to laugh so hard that I cried for 10 minutes straight. So awesome. Can’t believe we didn’t do that sooner. Next time I will wear long sleeves… At one point, a bird knocked my sunglasses off of my head, onto my eyes.

Right after the birds were full, Rick held a koala, where he became best mates with the koala keepers. And it pooped on him. And then we held a baby croc – it didn’t poop on Rick. Rick is now best friends with the park croc handler and the photographer.

We made our way back to the kangaroos, where he immediately captured the mateship of Bill, the volunteer who thought Rick was pretty awesome. After chatting with him for quite awhile about NRA and Global Warming, Bill talked Rick into snuggling with the big kangaroo. And of course, he stood up with Roo poo on him.

Next up were the crocodiles. Rick hasn’t seen a croc before, so he was first impressed with the little guys, and then was shocked when he saw the giant male croc. I think that was his favorite thing about the sanctuary. That or the dingos – they are quite cute little critters. And the tree kangaroos – so pretty. We watched the free flight bird show – always fun to see.

Rainbow.
It was almost lunchtime, and we had seen most of the park, so we headed down to Rainbow Bay Surf Club for lunch. As we were signing in, one of the waitresses said to rick, “You’re from the country, yeah?” His response was (wearing his 10 gallon cowboy hat and boots) “is it that obvious?” A few minutes of small talk and we find out that she is from the Snowy River area. Both of our ears perked up, and we were like, as in, the Man from Snowy River? More chatter, lines from the movie, and we finally got some lunch. The view from the balcony is amazing, we had a beer and a great chat. Rick decided we needed to buy some swim trunks (he left his at the house – didn’t know we were going to a beach). As we were walking inside, one of the ladies came up and said that I just made her and her daughters’ day by bringing in my brother. She said, “you probably get that all the time.” Gag. Eye roll. Yes, yes, I know. Rick just pours in the charm and gathered up the ladies for a photo shoot. The Girls from Snowy River. They practically begged us to come back before he leaves.

20140505-202427.jpg

Trunks.
We stopped by the Kirra Surf Shop to get Rick some swim trunks. He moseys into the store, and a surfer dude greets him. “Hey mate, what can I help you with?” Rick says, straight-faced, “I need you to get me into the ocean.” All righty then. Board shorts and flip flops and a towel later, and we were on our merry way to find a beach with a good lifeguard.

Surfers Paradise.
Everywhere we go, you can see Surfers Paradise. Rick keeps asking if it is Brisbane. It blows his mind to think that there are that many high rises that aren’t filled with office space, but instead apartments and hotels. He actually had a dream last night that Surfers Paradise wasn’t as big and cool in reality as it appears from a distance – kind of like the castle at Disney World. So, I thought we better go check it out. I knew there would be plenty of people and lifeguards to make sure he came out of the water alive. He made me run into a surf shop and buy him a t-shirt – because even though we are in the land of no worries, everyone else was wearing clothes. That was because it was kind of chilly and only a few brave souls were jumping in the water.

We found a spot to sit in the sand, and watched the waves roll in, old men in speedos walk by, and people swimming between the flags. After a while, I reminded him that the sun sets at 5:15 so if he’s going to go, he better get to it. Rick doesn’t rush into things, especially the ocean, but he finally worked up the courage to give it a go. In he went. He went far enough in to have saltwater splash up into his nose when a wave rolled in, and then decided that was probably long enough. But hey, Rick swam in the ocean. Cross that off the bucket list.

Night Swim.
Since he was already dressed for it, when we got home Rick jumped in the hot tub. Ty got home a few minutes after us and was super excited to see Uncle Rickey in the pool. It didn’t take him long to join him, and then Jay couldn’t resist the temptation. Lots of fun splashing around before dinner.

20140505-203802.jpg

Buggy.
After dinner (Lily LOVES lasagna and green beans( we went for a quick night buggy ride. Halfway through Ty climbed in front and nearly fell asleep on Rick and my laps. Lily fell asleep in jay’s arms. We got home and Ty wanted to go straight to bed – laid down at the bottom of the steps. Rick carried him upstairs and he was out. It was 7:00.

We did a little research on catching bull sharks to get Rick an idea on what needs to happen if he decided to fish off the dock, then all decided it was time for bed.
