Just Boatin’ in the Rain

Two coworkers from the US – Shane and Carrie – arrived in Brisbane Sunday morning. We invited them over after they got checked in for a boat ride to help keep them awake. The forecast called for rain, so we almost cancelled, but then decided a quick trip to Sanctuary Cove would be better than nothing. As we were pulling out of our dock, the sprinkles started, but it wasn’t too bad. Ty got to play in the beach/pool for a while. It came down pretty good when we were eating lunch. It lightened up a bit, and we thought it may get worse, so we thought we better just head on out. It rained the whole way home, but they didn’t seem to mind. I think they were just happy to be off the airplane, and in a place where going out on a boat was an option. :).

When we got home, we sat around and chatted. They both tried Vegemite – both hated it, as expected. The sun came out, a nice breeze was blowing through, so we sat outside on the patio a while. Shane had done an expat assignment in India. It was nice to talk with someone who has experienced this. I know it probably sounds like our life is all glamorous, but we really are just two working parents, trying to excel at our jobs as parents and at work, there are still only 24 hours in a day, and our support network is a 24 hour trip away. That is the hardest thing to get used to, and Shane knew exactly what that feels like.

They asked how the cafeteria at the branch is, and we had to break the bad news that there isn’t one. So, we hopped in the buggy and took them to the grocery store to pick up a few things for them to try for lunches. All in all it was a really fun day, despite the weather not being totally cooperative.

After they left, it was back to the typical Sunday evening rush. Make lunches, finish laundry, bath kids. It is 7:00 pm, feels more like 10:00. Ty didn’t take a nap today. He didn’t want to miss the fun (he has more of his aunts and uncle in him than me). I am fully expecting him to crash at any minute…but then he started watching shark videos on the IPad. A never ending loop of shark attack YouTube videos. If you are ever bored, check it out. Hours of entertainment.

Back to the grindstone in the morning. Have a great week!

The Glass House

Sleepless.
Friday night Lily had a rough time. She was up off and on all night, so restless and uncomfortable. Ty, however, somehow managed to sleep through it all. At about 2:30 in the morning, when we were actually all sound asleep, Jay and I were both frightened out of bed by the sound of a large crash. What the heck?!?! I turned on the lights and started to creep down the stairs. Jay’s sense of hearing must be better than mine, as he went to the guest bathroom. We always have the blind down over the window – don’t really use that bathroom, and the blind helps keep the sun out. He said that he thought the window had broken. My groggy mind had a hard time comprehending what happened. And then I noticed little bits of glass sitting on the ledge by the tub, and I heard a crackling noise. Jay was hesitant to pull up the blinds – didn’t want it all to fall in. There wasn’t anything laying around that looked like it would have caused the damage. We figured a bird hit it, never crossed our mind that anyone might have thrown something at it. As we were already sleep deprived from Lily we went back to sleep, figured we would do more investigative work when the sun came up. Ty didn’t hear a thing.

Saturday morning I showed Ty what happened. We pulled up the blind and I was shocked at how big the hole was! He and I went outside to see if there was a dead bird (or bat) laying on the ground. Nothing. We looked all around the ground, under the hedges, on the other side of the wall. Nothing. I figured we better notify security just in case there were other similar incidents. They haven’t received any other reports. He did say that sometimes the heat makes the glass shatter, but I don’t think it has been especially hot here the past few days. He also said that he has seen the bats run into windows, shatter them, and fly off. This is my best theory at the moment.

The real estate manager came by to assess the situation. As he was standing outside looking up, he said, “it almost looks like it came from the inside out.” I didn’t think anything of the comment at the time. I am certainly not an expert in assessing the evidence of broken glass, but I can say with 100% certainty that nothing went through that window from the inside. And then glass started falling on the guy. He went upstairs and knocked the rest of the glass out with the broom handle. And then he said to Ty, “I don’t suppose you threw something through that window.” And my sweet little sarcastic kid who “just wanted to give the man an answer” said, “yeah, I shouldn’t have thrown my monster truck.” Oh boy. So if the guy had any initial thoughts that we were nasty people trying to cover up something that we did, now he certainly thinks so. Great. This ought to be a fun one.

For the record, putting this out on the internet for the world to know, and I would put my life on this, Ty did not “throw a monster truck” out the window at 2:30 AM in the bathroom that he never goes in where the blind was closed which prevented the glass from going everywhere when he was sound asleep and all three monster trucks were tucked away safe and sound in their box in the toy room. Good Lord. If he had done it, we would be the first ones to ask “who do we make the check out to.” I am so worried now that there is going to be drama…. Ugh….

In other news.
We decided to keep Lily home from swim lessons since she had such a rough night. I took Ty to his lesson and he did great. Still not real comfortable floating on his back, so we need to work on that. We came home and made an appointment to have the doctor check out Lily’s ears. Am hoping that she doesn’t have another ear infection.

While we waited for the time to go to the appointment we caught part of the Iowa State sweet sixteen game, and Jay and Ty vacuumed the car. What a bummer for the Cyclones. 😦

Ears.
Dr. Simone checked out Lily and, just as I suspected, she has an ear infection again. Twice in a month. :(. She said if she gets another one, she will refer is to an ear/nose/throat specialist to see about putting grommets in. I suppose this is like tubes in the US. Hopefully she doesn’t get anymore, but if she does we will consider it, if it will prevent pain in the future.
And, because I knew my mom has been worrying about this, I asked the doctor if it could be caused by swimming. She said no, because her infection is on the ear drum. Swimmers Ear is in the canals. So we don’t have to stop swimming! Yay!

Glass.
We had lunch at the ramina and then came home to meet the ASAP Glass repair guy. It was pretty impressive. He fixed it right up, right there in the driveway. Ty was fascinated by the process. We sat outside on the buggy and watched him work. He showed Ty the tool he uses to cut the glass. Pretty neat. He cleaned up all of the glass upstairs, and tried to get most of the glass outside, but a ton of it ended up in the garden, under the bushes. He couldn’t get that. The worst part is that is where I have to walk to hang dry clothes. No more running out there barefoot! I hope neither of the kids (or Jay) forget and run out there without shoes. Ugh. What a mess.

A couple weeks ago we noticed that the neighbor next door had a shattered window. She was outside so I asked her if she knew what happened. Nope, they figured a bird or the heat did it. She hadn’t reported it to security. I told her what happened. She was going to call security to have them review the tapes (there are cameras all over the neighborhood) to see if they noticed anything. Seems a little coincidental…and now I have myself freaked out a bit. We will be sleeping with the lights on outside. 😦

Bomb.
And then the neighbor gave me some interesting scoop. Apparently the renters 2 people before us got evicted. They were apparently bad people that pissed off some even worse people. One day she came home to find that she couldn’t go to her house. A bomb squad was there to extract a freaking bomb from the driveway. What?!?! Yeah, that guy didn’t live here much longer. Oh the stories these walls could tell…

Pool.
It was hot on Saturday. Really stinking hot. And humid. Like a good old Iowa August day. So between the Lily not feeling well, the dr appointment and the glass guy coming , we didn’t have a chance to go anywhere fun to cool off ( like the beach or the waterpark). When Ty went down for a nap, Jay and I put Lily in her playpen and he and I jumped in the pool. Well, I stepped in, cautiously, trying not to get my hair wet. And then as I was floating on my back, relaxing, Mr. I Just Learned How To Cannonball did just that. Hard to get mad at him when he looks so proud of himself. 🙂

When Ty woke up, he wanted to swim, so he and Jay splashed around while Lily slept in my arms. She would occasionally sort of wake up, sort of not, whining and moaning. Poor babe felt like crud. :(. The view I had, however, made me smile. Watching Ty and Jay through the window, I could only imagine what their conversations were about. I sure do love those boys.

I am hoping for a peaceful night, and that the meds kick in ASAP for Lily. There are some people from the States flying in tomorrow, and the plan is to take them out on the boat. It depends on how Lily fares overnight, though.

G’night mates!

Growing.
So I know that growing up is part of life, and is currently my 8 month old daughter’s number one job. But I get a little misty eyed when I think about how just a few short months ago, when she was immobile, cuddling with her mama was the highlight of her day (I assume, as it was usually the highlight of mine). But ever since she has figured out this whole crawling gig, she only wants me for food. Sometimes if I put her down she will whinge (whine) but when I pick her up she isn’t exactly cuddly – I think she just wanted the birdseye view of things. So when I get those rare moments near bedtime when she will actually just relax in my arms, I am in my happy place.

And then I look at Ty and see a smart young man, not the baby I swear I was holding just last week, it makes me wonder where the time has gone…

Tide.
The price of Tide is ridiculous. A bottle (not bulk size) is about $22 regular price. So when we find it on sale, we stock up. This week Jay found the deal of the century – $5 a bottle!!!!! Ty asked Jay, “dad, are you going to buy ALL of the bottles?” “Yep”

20140328-194018.jpg

Fever.
Friday morning after I had finished getting ready for work, I noticed Lily looked really flushed. Checked her temp, and she had a low grade fever. Jay had month end things to wrap up, my calendar was pretty free, so I stayed home with her. She was pretty good about letting me get some work done, but when she wasn’t happy, she let me know about it. She took a couple good naps, temp has come down. We will see how she goes tomorrow. Runny nose, grabbing her ears, putting everything in her mouth, mild diaper rash. Pretty sure it is more teeth, but I can’t see any yet.

The best part about staying home was getting to FaceTime with mom, Steven and Brooke. Lily and Papa had a great conversation – lots of shrieks. Brooke took this picture during the call. You wouldn’t know by looking at that smile that she wasn’t feeling well. So darn cute!

20140328-180302.jpg

Rain!
Queensland is in a drought – I think someone said it has been like a 7 year drought. So everyone seemed to be pretty happy when the rain came this week. It rained for several days straight. Jay has drained an inch or more of water out of the pool a couple times now, and it keeps filling right back up again. Crazy! Hopefully it keeps raining and gets to the farmers that need it most. Crop insurance is not available here, so farmers tend to struggle.

Pigs.
Speaking of farmers…when I think about the diet of Australians, I think pork. The steak sucks. Maybe some lamb. But pork wins by a landslide. Bacon. Middle bacon. Streaky bacon. All different types of bacon. Sausage rolls. More sausage options than I can count. So I have asked a couple people – where are all of the pork producers in Australia. The response I have received was, “Um, not sure, nobody has ever asked.” This answer doesn’t satisfy my curiosity , so I did a little research.

Pork is the most widely consumed form of animal protein
Australia’s pig industry has a farmgate value of just over a billion dollars (Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resource Economics, ABARE).

The Australian pork supply chain is valued at $3.5 billion and employs more than 33,000 people.

Approximately 87% of Australia’s pigmeat production is for domestic consumption.

I found this map at http://www.daff.gov.au

Mystery solved!!

Barricade.
Lily is all over, everywhere. The house is pretty well kid proofed, but today I blocked off the kitchen so she couldn’t get at the trash and pantry. She wasn’t impressed…

20140328-193636.jpg

Month end.
Jay is really getting into the swing of things, as was evident by the very smooth month end the week. He was home most nights by 6 or 6:30 (yay!!).

Now it’s the start of the weekend. Pizza and movie night, and about the 100th time we have watched Oz the Great and Powerful. Hoping to have a fun, relaxing weekend. G’day mates!

A Buggy’s Life

Ice Cream Brekky.
We forgot to pull bacon out of the freezer on Saturday, so on Sunday morning we loaded up the buggy with all sorts of fun things, threw on our swimsuits, and went to the marina for breakfast. Ty said he wanted waffles. I am pretty sure he can’t read, but the menu said it is served with ice cream. Good choice, son. What the menu didn’t say was that the waffles were made with 50% sugar. So after brekky we needed to burn off some of that sugar high.

20140323-155426.jpg

20140323-155452.jpg

Corvettes.
We have only seen a Corvette or two down under. We were all pretty excited to see a whole bunch of them parked in the marina parking lot! Sweet!

20140323-160656.jpg

Tennis.
We drove the buggy to a nearby tennis court. Ty had a free lesson at school and seemed to like it. And it is a pretty easy sport for us to play together (and have him chase balls). We played for quite a while, I gave Lily a bottle, she snoozed while we played some more. It started to get warm so we hopped in the buggy to cool off in the breeze on our way to our next buggy destination.

20140323-155623.jpg

20140323-155701.jpg

Basketball.
In another little neighborhood, they have a basketball hoop with a little slab of concrete – not enough for a pick up game, but enough to get some shots in. There was a covered picnic area close by, so jay and I took turns keeping lily entertained in the shade while Ty threw the basketballs (and then the tennis balls) in the general vicinity of the hoop. We didn’t stay there too long before we really got hot and decided a dip in the neighborhood big pool was just what we needed.

20140323-160512.jpg

Cannonball!
When we arrived at the big pool, we had it all to ourselves. Some other kids arrived about 20 minutes later. Ty did great – swam in the deep end with Jay nearby. And then he climbed out of the pool and started doing cannon balls! With a running start. It was awesome.

Which reminds me of a story Jay told me last night at dinner. When he was playing in the pool by himself on Saturday, I remember him doing a cannon ball and then looking at me through the window with this look on his face like he just did something totally awesome. Well, come to find out he has never, ever, not once in his entire life, jumped in a swimming pool. What?!?! How does a person go 35 years without doing a cannon ball? I think I am going to have to give him diving lessons, too. :). Love this man. 🙂

After about an hour in the pool, it was nearly lunchtime so we headed home. Fixed grilled cheese sandwiches, then Ty laid down for a nap. I was researching flights for my brother to come to australia and Lily fell asleep in her high chair eating puffs. So sweet.

20140323-162041.jpg

Rickster.
And then we found a good price and decent routes for my brother, Rickey, to come to Australia!!!! He is flying out on May 2, will arrive here on Sunday, May 4 in the morning. I. Can’t. Wait. After we booked his ticket, I started wondering if Rickey even owns a pair of shorts and flip flops. Might have to go shopping immediately after he lands. :). Gosh, the sun hasn’t seen his legs for probably 20 years, let alone the Aussie sun. I will buy more aloe vera before he lands in the sunburnt nation.

Bug’s Life.
Jay went to the grocery store, and when Ty woke up we popped A Bug’s Life into the DVD player. A perfect way to round off “a buggy life” day.

Have a great week!

Feet on the Ground.
Lily was really stretching herself on Saturday. She pulled herself up on the steps (see Facebook video), and on her car-car. She was holding on with one hand. I think walking is in her near future.

20140322-144530.jpg

Sale.
After swim lessons on Saturday, we followed the signs to a garage sale. We picked up a bike for Jay, a rake, some fishing poles, and a tackle box. Then we realized we don’t have a bike rack. So guess who had to ride the bike 5 kilometers home? Jay. In his nice weekend clothes. Getting passed by serious bikers in spandex left and right. I am sure they were wondering what the bogan on the bike was doing. He came stumbling in the house, covered in sweat, looking like he might pass out. Said his legs were jello. But by golly he made it. 🙂

Relax.
I had a hair appointment, and I stopped by the marina boutique afterward. Jay and the kids had a fun time playing while I was gone. They went for a bike ride to the park to play baseball, and then Ty rose his bike around the majority of the neighborhood. I came home just in time to watch Ty fall asleep on the trampoline.

20140322-144415.jpg

Jay jumped in the pool and I got some snuggles in with Lily-bean. Based on his apparent level of enjoyment in the pool, I think my chances of getting one when we move back home are pretty good. 🙂

20140322-144621.jpg

Date!
Jay and I were needing a nice dinner alone, so we asked one of Lily’s teachers to babysit. Ty basically kicked us out of the house – he was super excited to play. Jay and I went to Marina Mirage and are at a place called Saks. We sat outside, had a table right next to the edge if the boardwalk. Our entertainment was throwing scraps of food into the water and watching the fish pounce on it. Of course when we looked away from the water, we heard some girls on the dock squeal and the guy at the table next to us say a shark swam by. Nuts! Our food was delicious. Even had dessert. Yummy!

After our bellies were full, we walked around the marina. The Palazzo Versace hotel is on the marina. We decided to stroll through the lobby. Um, I was impressed before we even got inside. The walkway had beautiful pillars, the circle drive entrance was made of little pebble stones meticulously places into a work of art. The lobby was breathtaking. The most beautiful hotel I have ever stepped foot in. I told Jay that I didn’t care if it was only a half hour from our house – he could take me there sometime for a mini “getaway”. Palazzo Versace Hotela

Clever.
Ty has a handful of books that are considered “activity” books and don’t make the cut for bedtime books. One of then is Goldbug, which is a 40-50 page “where’s Waldo” type of book where you have to find Goldbug. That little stinker told the babysitter that he wanted to read that book. She pushed back a bit, but he won. They read the whole thing. So clever…

And with that, this bedtime story is complete. Good night!

Ewwwwwww!

Huntsman.
I nearly fainted on Thursday. I haven’t been that close to actually fainting in a long time, if ever. Let me recap.

So there I am, sitting at my desk, nose to the grindstone, minding my business, you know, solving the world’s problems. I notice a flurry of activity in the aisle next to mine, so I pop out into the aisle to find out what is going on.

“Spider.” Well crap.
“How big?” “Big.” Double crap.
“Poisonous?” “Not sure, don’t think so.”
“Where?” Oh wait, don’t answer that. If the guy under that desk with the Tupperware is any clue, I’d say it is probably over there…under the desk that SHARES a cubicle wall with me.

Oh Lord. Ok, so I guess this is an opportunity to see a real live giant spider. I crept over towards the desk, then hear a flurry of activity from the guy under the desk, and then see a HUGE spider scurry along the outside of the desk and head straight towards…you guessed it….my desk. Triple quadruple crap. That spider was gi-freaking-normous. I felt a wave of heat rush over me, knees felt weak. I might have squealed like a pig. I might have ran down the hallway. I might have caused a bit of a scene. You would have, too.

Thankfully I work with some awesome people who came to my rescue. My boss and one of the guys in my department set to work pulling everything out from underneath my desk and spraying insect repellent. Thankfully I had a meeting and didn’t have to sit down right away. I think I have looked under my desk a dozen times since he sighting. I hope I don’t see it again. Once was enough for me.

This is not my photo, nor is it my hand, but this is a slightly larger (but not by much) version of my new cube-mate.

20140321-212103.jpg

Artist.
Apparently my niece did not get her artistic abilities from her Aunt Nicole. Brianna is in a nationwide art contest for a drawing she made. I am super impressed – it is really an awesome piece of artwork. If you want to vote for her, you can go to Artsonia

Good luck B-ster!

20140321-212244.jpg

Snowy River.
I had very little exposure to Australia before moving here. Everything I knew about Australia I learned about from Crocodile Dundee and one of the best movies of all time: The Man From snowy River. “You’re getting the hang of it. I’ll be back later to check on your work.” I have mentioned to Jay a few times that I would love to go visit the place where the movie was filmed (still not entirely sure where????). So I was pleasantly surprised and slightly amused to spy this in the freezer at the grocery store (have I mentioned how much the Aussies love their meat pies?)

20140321-212926.jpg

Mary Poppins.
Friday night pizza and movie night this week: Mary Poppins!!!! I was so excited to watch it, and Ty had been asking questions for 3 days leading up to it. He was very curious about this lady that flies through the air using an umbrella. He was really into it, soaking it all up. I, unfortunately, fell asleep halfway through (nuts!!), but he and Jay watched the whole thing. He loved it.

20140321-213249.jpg

Weekend!
And now it is the start of the weekend. Let the fun begin! More to come over the next couple of days.

Holy Tacos Batman!

Is That a Taco Truck?!
I am apparently starting to hallucinate. Someone call 911. Jay was driving down the road and I saw a trailer of some sort on the side of the road with flags flying off of it. The sun was in my eyes and the windshield was a little foggy, so I couldn’t quite make out what the vehicle was. My brain deduced that it was a taco truck. My heart went pitter patter. My mouth started salivating. I shouted, “is that a taco truck?!?!” For the record, I have never actually eaten from a taco truck, but at this point the thought of any type of Mexican food makes my mouth water.
Jay started laughing. We got closer, my eyes adjusted, and I realized it was an oversize flatbed semi trailer hauling a load of drywall or something. Whatever it was, it was not tacos, queso, or guacamole. Damn. Better luck next time.
Jay was kind enough to follow it up with, “Is that a unicorn?!?!” Because the likelihood of seeing either in Australia is about the same.

This Episode is Brought to you by the Letter S.
Ty learned about the letter S at school. I was really impressed at how well he could ssssssssound sssssssstuff out to find out if it starts with the letter s. Sssssssunglasses. Sssssssswim. Sssssstars. Ssssssssslily…hmmm… Ssssssssssdad….hmmmm… Sssssssssmom… Ok, maybe not genius level, but still pretty good for the first day. 🙂

Batman.
Ty has been really into playing pretend, and he usually wants to be Batman. We try to discourage the fighting that comes along…boys…. He also has really enjoyed watching Oz the Great and Powerful. I think it is a bit much, a little scary, but he doesn’t seem to mind. Monday night he wanted to be Batman, Jay was Oz the Great & Powerful (said in full every time), Lily was the wicked green witch, and I was Glenda. He ran from the toy room to the kitchen 50 times, telling us what was happening, what we should be doing, and most importantly where the flying monkeys were. The best was when Jay would try to throw an idea out there, Ty would say, “no, Oz the Great and Powerful doesn’t do that.” Apparently in Ty’s pretend world only his rules count. 🙂

Bite.
On Tuesday I got a call from daycare. Turns out Lily tried to steal a toy from an older boy, he didn’t like it, and he expressed his feelings by biting her finger. Dang. It didn’t leave a mark, just frightened her. Oh, how I hated this phase when Ty went through it. Awful on both the receiving and the giving end. It is an animal instinct, one of the few ways they have to communicate at an early age. I get that, but it still sucks. I really hope this isn’t the start of a recurring event. Ugh.

Snoozer Sunday

Warning.
Nothing too exciting in this blog post. I just can’t let a Sunday evening go by without an update.

Plants.
So we live in a tropical climate. There are beautiful flowers all around us. Our landscaping is pretty low maintenance, which is fine, but is lacking some color. I remember the first time I saw the plant Birds of Paradise. I was in PLR and Lynnette’s husband sent her a bouquet for her birthday. It had a couple BOPs in it – such a cool plant. Many of the gardens around here have them. They almost seem like hostas back home. I had to have one. Jay and Sherry bought 3 plants and we finally found time to put them in the ground today.
I wanted them to be in the backyard, but we were going to have to dig up some grassy plants. No big deal….until Jay dug in and giant ants came out from everywhere. Ty wanted to help but freaked out when one went crawling inside his shirt. Ty and I left Jay to the backyard and we went to the from to clean out some bushes (and get away from the nasty ants). Two minutes later Jay wandered up, said he quit. There were too many ants, rocks, and the ground just wasn’t ideal.
So we ended up sort if sticking them in the front yard, bunched together. Not what I was envisioning, but not worth being ant dinner.

Robina.
After a quick shower Jay wanted to take me to the mall that he and Sherry found – Robina Town Center. Finally!! A great mall! It was really nice. I didn’t buy anything for myself, but Jay and Ty found a few things. Ty picked out a hat and some new flips.

20140316-180815.jpg
Watching Ty walk in flip flops for the first time was pretty entertaining. It is a skill – I don’t think he was expecting it to be so hard.
Look closely at his hat. Jay was a proud dad. I just laughed. This will have to be a “night and weekend” hat. Probably not appropriate for school. But at least it doesn’t have a lame flat bill. 🙂

This is kind of random, but pretty slick. The parking garage at the mall told you how many spots were available on each of the levels as you drove in. And then each of the stalls had a red or green light above it, so you could look down the lane and see if there were any open green spots. Smart. We need this in the US.

20140316-181351.jpg

Cyclones.
We may be on the other side of the world, but we were showing our support for the Cyclones back home. Go State!

20140316-181140.jpg

Pool.
When we got home, Ty and I put together 2 puzzles we bought at the mall. I went for the 60 piece puzzle, and thought it might be a stretch. But my son is apparently a genius and knocked them both out pretty quickly with very little help. Impressed (and proud since I am a puzzle fan myself / can’t wait to do a 1000 piecer with him….).
Ty and I swam a bit, Lily played poolside, and Jay went to pick up groceries. Should be a relaxing rest of the night.

Sorry this was kind of a snoozer of a weekend. Have a great week!

Better.
Ty had a much better day on Friday. I was worried because it was crazy hair day at school, and I figured all of the kids would be wound up. We gave Ty a Mohawk and sprayed it green. I would like to point out that I think my over-concern about spiders and snakes has sunk into his little head. We went outside to spray his hair and I told him to stand in the grass. He didn’t have his shoes on yet, and he seemed very timid. He said that he didn’t want to get bit by a spider or snake. He wouldn’t go in the grass until I reassured him that it was safe. :). The finished hairdo definitely met the definition of “crazy hair.”

20140315-082033.jpg

20140315-082053.jpg
And we couldn’t let Lily go to school without attempting to make what little hair she has crazy.

We left work a little early to try to catch Mr. Lucas to discuss Ty’s behavior this week. Thankfully when we got there he said Ty had a great day! Phew! I think that his little world was shook up when Memaw went back home, he felt sad, but couldn’t explain his feelings. :(. Poor little guy. It’s tough being a kid.
Mr. Lucas did say that most of the time Ty is such a sweet little boy, helpful, and kind. He just has his moments, like all little kids. He also mentioned that he is starting to be sneaky (although clever) and blaming stuff on other kids, so we will have to keep an eye on that.
Ty is a napper. Every day, after lunch, he takes a solid nap. But for whatever reason on Friday he couldn’t fall asleep. He got a little sad early afternoon, probably just from being exhausted. When we got home, we started watching Wall-E while Jay made pizzas. I could tell Ty was hanging on by a thread. When supper was ready he wouldn’t eat anything, just wanted to lay on the couch. Sure enough, by 7:00 he was out like a light. And Lily fell asleep on Jay. *sigh*. We watched the rest of the movie (even though I think it is pretty boring) and put the kiddos to bed.

Rugby.
For the first time in probably a year and a half, Jay and I sat on the couch and watched football. Only it wasn’t American football. Aussie rules football – rugby. Wowza! These boys are t.o.u.g.h. They look like cavemen. They play the sport like ancient warriors going into battle. Non-stop for two 40 minute halves, with only a 10 minute max halftime. No pads. No helmets. Lots of blood.
I don’t know the rules, but here is what I saw. Pick up the ball, run into a crowd of men equally huge and scary looking. Get shoved to the ground, clotheslined, kicked, then give the ball to a guy behind you. Repeat. Do this until you cross the goal line (hopefully) or run out of passes, which I think is 6. They have to throw the ball behind them, or they can kick it forward to a teammate. Hmmm. Seems kind of like how a lot of the things I have come across at work have gone…plow forward. Road block. Back up. Pick another route. Plow forward. Road block. Back up. Pick another route. Repeat. Thankfully on some of the stuff I have been working on we have crossed the goal line.
I digress. The sport is crazy. I don’t know what they pay those guys to play, but there is no way it is anywhere near enough. I felt like I had been in a bar brawl just sitting on the couch watching it on TV. We are planning on going to a game when Jeff and Rachel come to visit. I am looking forward to it now. I think it should be pretty entertaining watching it live!

Rough Night.
Lily must be having teeth pain again. Her nose is stuffed up and she didn’t sleep worth a darn last night. I went to bed at halftime of the rugby game and Jay was thinking about going to the marina to watch the second half, but he stayed home since Lily was so upset. :(. Poor little peanut. Teething bites. Saturday morning after I fed Lily, Jay asked if I thought she should go to swim lessons. Before I could respond, Lily projectile vomited all over me, the wall, the carpet. I guess that answered that question. So she and I stayed home while Jay and Ty went to swim lessons. Afterwards, they hit up some garage sales looking for a bike for Jay. No luck yet.

When the boys got home I put a roast in the crockpot and started making some baby food. Zucchini, peas, mango. I was about to start kiwi, but my head started pounding. I could barely clean up my mess before I needed to lie down. I laid on the guest bed for a half hour, trying to ease the pain before my hair appointment. Didn’t work. :(. I had to cancel my appointment. Jay and Ty took my place, and they took lily with them. I basically crawled up the steps and fell into bed. I fell asleep, heard them come home, then fell asleep again. I woke after a while and tried to eat lunch, then slept some more. Finally by around 4:00 it had pretty much passed. What a wasted day. :(. Maybe my body was trying to tell me I needed to take a break. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Pool.
When Ty woke up from his nap, he and Jay went for a “swim”. It was a little breezy, so it took Ty a while to get in. And then he didn’t want to get his hair wet. I made them come out when his lips started turning blue. Lily and I sat poolside and watched the boys splashing around.

XXXX.
Check out this awesome writing on the back of the XXXX beer can. I don’t think I have seen anything similar in the US, but there should be. Pretty sure the rugby guys drink this beer. If the line “man in a can” doesn’t make a dude want to drink the beer, nothing will.

Beef.
One thing I am starting to miss is a good cut of Lingren beef. My roast that I had been smelling all day was just OK. It was super salty, not the best flavor. Good beef is something go will not take for granted when we move back home.

Fort.
We made a fort after dinner. Ty sported his head lamp and turned off most of the lights in the house. Lots of fun, imaginative play.

Here’s to hoping for a healthy, productive day tomorrow!

Missing Memaw

Navajo Tacos.
Yum. Yum. Yum. Memaw made Navajo tacos for us for our last dinner together. Yum.

Ugh.
Memaw left on Tuesday. I suppose she had to go back to the US at some point. I was in denial about that the entire time she was here. We had such a great time together. She got a taste of our normal, crazy life, and she helped out a ton. It is going to take a few days to adjust back to life with only 4 adult hands in the house. I have to get used to coming home to a dirty house, doing our laundry and ironing, and fixing meals again. The house feels so empty. I was able to choke back the tears on the outside to keep Ty from getting upset, but inside my heart was crying when she left. :(. Ugh.

8 Months!!
Lily is 8 months old! She has mastered crawling, and likes to pull herself up to her knees. She often times does this odd crawl/walk where she uses her feet and her hands (with her fanny in the air) to get from point A to point B. She definitely says “da-da” now. She has added bananas and Cheerios to her diet. She can chug down a bottle of pure formula like a champ (even though she still prefers the good stuff). She is a seasoned boater, rarely complaining about her bulky life jacket. The thing that makes her most happy is her brother. It is amazing that the love they have for each other is so apparent. I hope they stay best buds for life. Being a mom is a pretty cool gig, especially with 2 awesome kiddos. And with that, I give you the 8 month Owl picture.

Testing.
Literally 2 days after I wrote about how awesome my kids are, Ty decided to take a turn for the worse. He is really testing our patience. He has gotten in trouble at school for hitting, kicking, spitting, and throwing food. :(. The first night we took away TV, and then when he decided to be a little stinker at home (not listening, throwing things at me, telling me no, etc), we took away books at night. We started the next day really well, but then again the teachers said that he was spitting and throwing food. The punishment increased to spending time in his room alone, to think about his choices. This sucks. Why can’t he be a perfect angel 100% of the time? 😦

IIFY?
It is Thursday night. It’s been a long, exhausting, emotionally draining week. Jay and Ty are at the ramina getting some groceries and dinner. I am home with Lil. I have things that I want to look at for work but I have decided (just now) that I want to sit on the couch with a glass of wine and watch a movie with the fam. And fall asleep early. So looking forward to the weekend. No real plans, just catching up on everything Memaw had been spoiling us with, I am getting my hair cut…other than that we don’t have anything on the agenda. And I am ok with that (just this once).
