Crocs.
We went to the Australia Zoo today, which was created by Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter. The place was HUGE! Almost too huge. It was a really nice zoo, very clean and well cared for. But, in my opinion, not as good as the Omaha zoo. I think that because of its size, it needed more animals. Still really cool, and we would (and probably will because we bought an annual pass) go back again. As expected, there were tons of crocs. They had an awesome crocodile show in a huge crocoseum. Steve’s wife, daughter, and son all participated in the show, which was unexpected but pretty cool. Steve’s son is 10 and he was feeding the crocs. Yikes!

Koalas.
We saw more koalas, and although we didn’t hold one, we did get to pet one. They are as soft as they look.

Roos.
So one of my worst fears happened today. Because we had such an awesome experience at Currumbin, and Ty LOVES all animals, even though jay and I tell him over and over again to be careful, go slow, yadda yadda, Ty came across an angry kangaroo today. The Australia Zoo has a huge park like setting that has a few kangaroos. Some people were petting them. Ty went up to one that was laying down, and even though he went up to it pretty slow, it didn’t feel like getting touched. Without any warning, it reached out its paws that unfortunately have some long nails and scratched his chin and chest. He cried and cried. It definitely hurt, scared him, and probably broke his heart a little that the kangaroo didn’t want to be his best friend. :(. Like a trooper, though, he didn’t want to leave. We washed off his battle scars as best we could and kept making our way through the zoo. He learned a valuable lesson today about animals. Hopefully he will remember this the next time he comes across animals. I just hate that he go hurt, especially by an animal that we get so excited about seeing. We thought that we better pick up a kangaroo toy when we left. On the bright side, there aren’t that many dudes out there that can say they got attacked by a kangaroo. It will be a great ice breaker for him throughout his life…”hi, my name is Ty. I got attacked by a kangaroo once. What’s your name? Do you want to play with me?”

So this fun mini vacation is coming to an end. Back to work and school tomorrow. G’day mates!

Cool. Cooler. Coolest. Coolum.

Hide and Seek.
After swim lessons on Saturday we drove a couple hours up to the Sunshine Coast. As we were driving along we saw a store with cowhides hanging on the fences, so we whipped the car around and went to check it out. We walked out of there with a brindle cowhide for our living room and a kangaroo hide for Ty’s room.

Saddlery.
Just down the road was a western store, so we had to stop there, as well. We got a kick out of their sign.

Palmer Coolum Resort.
We checked into our room at the Palmer Coolum Resort. We chose this hotel because it has a dinosaur park. The resort has received a lot of negative press, ranging from poor service, to run down rooms, to incorrect statistics about the dinos, to complaints about dinos roaring all night. But, we knew Ty would think it was pretty cool so we decided to give it a go. I pictured a handful of animatronic dinosaurs, but apparently the richest man in Australia follows the “go big or go home” approach to Dino parks. If I had to guess, there were probably 100 dinosaurs. I know there are a lot of haters out there, but I thought it was pretty wicked (Ty’s new word). There were SO many of them, most of them moved and made noises, some were babies hatching out of eggs. Lily loved the pterodactyls flapping their wings overhead. And Ty skipped through the park. “Whoa look at that one!!” His reaction to everything was priceless.

Wild Roos!
I have been looking for wild kangaroos since the day we landed in Oz, and have not seen one. Until today. Right outside our hotel room balcony. And on our buggy ride to the beach (this hotel is ginormous) we saw Roos on the golf course. I love kangaroos!

Beach.
After a good nap (and the first time that I have sat on a couch for more than 10 minutes since we moved down under), we went to check out the beach. The Sunshine Coast is a bit unique in that they don’t allow development in most areas directly on the beach. So we walked along a beautiful sandy tree-filled path (and tried not to think about all of the poisonous critters watching us). We did see a bunch of little white crabs – Ty thought that was cool. We ended up at a beautiful beach. There was hardly anyone there, it kind of felt like we had the beach to ourselves. We dipped Lily’s toes in the ocean – she wasn’t sure what to think, but she didn’t freak out. There are a couple videos on my Facebook page if you are interested. Here are some still shots.

Pool.
After the beach, Ty wanted to swim in the pools. We had the first one all to ourselves!

Dinner “with” a billionaire.
We ate dinner at the Village Square, where all of the restaurants have an indoor/outdoor feel. We sat outside, at a table directly in front of the man behind the dinosaurs – Clive Palmer. He is the guy in the white shirt in the middle of the table.

20140112-092625.jpg

Ty was playing in the game room (finding change, of course), Lily was sleeping in her stroller, and Jay and I were enjoying a glass of wine, waiting for our meal to arrive, when a furry critter scurried up the pole behind Jay. I jumped up and ran from the table. Apparently my maternal instincts are lacking because I left Lily and the stroller at the table. A group of teenagers at a table nearby were laughing and said, “we saw it go under your table!” Thanks guys. Upon further inspection, it was a possum. They are not like the possums in the US, though (thank goodness). I wouldn’t go so far as to say they are cute, but they are better looking than their US relative. And I probably shouldn’t have been quite so nervous because at least there are no known cases of rabies in Australia. That being said, they do still have teeth. And it did nibble on Jay’s toes at one point (ewwww!!!). I ate most of my meal with my feet up on the bench. At least it gave is something to entertain us during our meal.

20140112-101148.jpg

More Roos.
Sunday morning we got up and ate breakfast (again with Clive) and as we were walking back to our hotel room, we came upon a mama Roo and her Joey. We must have scared the Joey because we watched him actually climb into his mama’s pouch. Might have been the coolest thing ever. After a couple minutes he peeked his head out of her pouch, checked us out, then went on eating grass with his mama. I decided to take a video and filmed them eating, then walking across the path in front of us, then hopping up the hill. It’s on my Facebook page. Wicked awesome.

Zoo.
We are on our way to the zoo now. More to come!

Things that Make me Happy

Mail.
Today’s mail included Christmas cards from the Bach’s and the Merrill’s! Yay! Thank you guys. Makes me happy.

Fashionisto.
Ty has been worrying more about what clothes he is wearing. Several times he has said, “I am going to go change.” And he comes downstairs in plaid shorts and a collared shirt (often with the collar popped like Papa and Uncle Rickey). Before Christmas he would get dressed up, brush his teeth, and put on a dab of Jay’s cologne if he thought we would run into Santa. Tonight we are going to the marina for dinner (been a long rough week at work for both Jay and I so we thought dinner, wine, and fresh air would do us good), and this is what he came downstairs in. So stinking cute.

20140109-175105.jpg

Weekend Plans.
We decided that we are going to go somewhere fun this weekend to do a little more exploring. We are going to drive up the Sunshine Coast a ways and stay at a dinosaur hotel Saturday night – Palmer Coolum Resort. Clive Palmer is one of the richest men in Australia and he spared no expense making a dinosaur park and hotel. It might be cheesy, but I think Ty will get a kick out of it. Sunday we are going to the Australia Zoo (this one’s for you, Ann). This topic is to be continued…

Boat.
Buying a boat in Australia is no easy task, but like most things here, we are chipping away at everything that needs to happen. Jay was able to get his marine drivers license today. The mechanical inspection was done on the boat today and quite a few things need repaired or replaced (mainly just due to it being an 8 year old boat). The mechanic seemed to think it would still be a good deal (and a really nice boat), so we will probably move forward. Next step is to negotiate some of the repair costs out of the original offer. Assuming we agree, it will take a couple days to wire the money. So….I am keeping my fingers crossed that we will have it by next weekend.

Jay also put an offer out on a Seapen. He talked to the guys at the Seapen factory and figures we can replace/refurbish a lot on it and still come out under market value for them. So looking good on that end.

Bachelor.
I know you were all losing as much sleep as I was over not being able to watch my favorite smut TV show – The Bachelor. You will all be relieved to know that I found out (all by myself!!) that I can buy a Season Pass to season 18 of The Bachelor on iTunes for $15. Done! I did log an official complaint with Watch ABC that I thought it was ridiculous that free television programming now comes with a cost (or impossible to purchase in some locations) just to make me feel better. But what made me feel most happy (and avoided me having to go see a psychiatrist) was being able to watch an episode last night. I just watched the “get to know Juan Pablo” episode last night, and am planning on watching the first real episode tonight or tomorrow. I know, I know, you don’t really care. :). But I had to give you an update and close the loop on that bit of drama.

Now That’s Funny Stuff

Diaper.
Or nappy, as they say here. The other night I got the task of dinner clean up while Jay got the kids bathed, pj’s on, and ready for bed. When I finished up, I came upstairs and found my three favorite people all laying in Ty’s bed, pj’s on, ready to read books. We went through our normal bedtime routine of reading 3 books, goodnight moon, and prayers. Lily seemed extra interested in the process, didn’t make a peep. Jay usually lays in Ty’s bed for a few minutes after we are done, so he picked up Lily, and laid her on his tummy for me to take her to bed. And then he said the most funny thing of the week. “Um, you might want to put her in a diaper.” What?!?! Playing with fire, Mr Shearer. How does one snap all of those buttons on pajamas and NOT realize that the baby does not have a diaper on? He is SO lucky she didn’t relieve herself…. Hilarious!

More visitors!!
Jeff and Rachel are coming to visit!!!!! They will be here for a couple weeks in April. And I think Riley and Miranda are coming in June/July. Add that to Sherry’s trip in a few weeks, and time is bound to fly by. I am so looking forward to everyone’s visits.

Spiked Bikers.
I have noticed some bikers riding their bicycles around with these homemade spikes coming out of their helmets. This piqued my curiosity, so I googled it.

Random Stuff

Snorkels.
I am not talking about the kind that you use to look under the water. I am talking about the kind you use to drive through the water.

20140106-172047.jpg
A lot of the trucks that we see on the road have them. We were thinking, really? Who drives through water often enough to require putting a snorkel on their truck?

Turns out that when people camp here, they often go onto a remote beach that you can only get to during low tide. If you don’t time things just right, you might have to drive through water to get in or out.

I have a few problems with this concept. One: I don’t think I would want to be somewhere where I might get stranded. Gives another meaning to “deserted island.” Two: you couldn’t pay me enough to camp anywhere in this poison infested country, I don’t care how beautiful it is. Three: Mama always told me “never, under any circumstance, drive through water.” Especially tidal ocean water…

Reese’s.
Sigh… I ate my last Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup tonight. I sucked every last morsel off of the wrapper, trying to make it last as long as possible. Remember a few weeks ago when I wrote the blog about opportunities to get rich in Australia? If someone would open a PB cup factory or figure out a cheap way to import those delicious treats, I think the American population alone would make the business profitable here. And I know there are lots of Aussies that love them, as well. Can someone please send Mr. Reese’s a letter? Thanks.

Cuddles.
It never fails. Lily goes to bed at 8:00 every night. I can go to sleep at 8:30 or 10:00, and without a doubt she will fuss 10 minutes after I turn off my lamp. As annoying as it is, especially if I had started to drift off to sleep, those sleepy cuddles are some of the best ever. She is a snuggle buddy, deep relaxed breaths, chin on my shoulder, fist with a death grip on my hair. Love.

Nickled and Dimed.
After completing a very positive review of our Queenstown condo, we received an email saying that after we left the housekeepers had to do additional “spot cleaning” and were going to deduct $86 from our deposit. Um….hold the fort. We were barely there, and we were super careful about keeping it clean. I left that place spotless. But mysteriously some “stains” appeared. They could not provide pictures, said the spots were around the dining area and on the stairs. Um. Stairs? So I sent a few nasty emails expressing my disappointment about the situation. I am trying to decide if I should keep fighting it or let it go. So hard for me to not put up a fight. I am guessing they do this to everyone…

Vending Machines.
Whenever we come across one of the candy or toy vending machines, Ty usually finds either candy or money. The positive reinforcement has really worked for him because now he checks all of them. One night we were sitting on the deck at the marina and Ty went inside to the area with the games. Somebody must have felt bad for the poor kid whose parents didn’t give him money to play games so he had to scavenge for some spare change, because he came back to the table with a stuffed lizard. Not sure exactly how he worked that one…did he beg, or cry, or just bat those adorable little eyelashes? Whatever he did, it worked.

Mail.
I have always liked getting “real mail” in the mail box, but now I absolutely love it! There is something about a handwritten note from friends and family far away that makes my heart happy. So thank you to Jack and Molly (I know it is strange to say thank you for sending a thank you card) and mom, Steven, and grandma grandma for the newspaper article and letter.

Bachelor.
I have survived the things that I thought would push me over the edge. The lack of ice, the horrible coffee, driving on the wrong side of the road. But how am I going to survive without the Bachelor? I have heard there are ways around the blocks but my tech-savy hubby has been a little busy with month end lately so unfortunately solving my TV problem isn’t his top priority. Sigh…

G’day Mates!

Break’s Over

Lunch.
Jay has BoatSafe class today so he can get his marine drivers license. It is supposed to be approximately 6-noon. This morning while I was feeding Lily at 6:00 AM, Ty came into Lily’s room. He said, “Mom, I just ate my lunch!” I said, “Do you mean breakfast?” “Nope, lunch. Will dad be home now?” Ahhhhhh, such a thinker. Then I asked him what he had for lunch. “Cheeseballs!” Of course. If only he could survive on cheeseballs…

Crumpets.
We decided we better have a proper brekky. The last time we went to the grocery store Ty threw a package of crumpets in the cart. Sure, why not?! I have asked him a couple of times if he wants to eat them and he has said no. Today, though, was the day he wanted to try them. I am not sure what the recommended topping is for crumpets. Ty ate his plain. I put strawberry jam on mine. It wasn’t too bad. It kind of tasted like a mix between an English muffin and a waffle. Ty loved it. Ate every last crumb.

20140105-160946.jpg

Safe Boater.
Jay passed his BoatSafe course with flying colors! After a couple hours of classroom learning and a couple hours of hands on jet ski and boat training, Jay aced his 80 question exam. In the words of the instructor, “that never happens, mate.” So, he has the book smarts down, now we just need lots of practice. We are hoping to get the mechanical inspection done on the boat this week. In typical Aussie fashion, this is the most drawn out boat-buying process ever…

Christmas Tree.
I figured I better put the Christmas tree away before I go back to work tomorrow. Jay had a great idea to put the tree in a closet, fully assembled, so next year it will be super easy to put it back up. I very carefully carried the tree across the house to the guest bedroom (yay! It didn’t fall apart!) only to find out that the tree is too wide for the closet. I then pulled the tree out of the closet to take the ornaments and 600 lights off of it (not so yay! Started to fall apart). As I was struggling to keep the tree together, Ty came to my rescue to help take off the ornaments. I continued to struggle with the lights. I kind of wish someone had video taped it, as it was not my most graceful de-treeing I have done… 5 hours later (probably) the tree and all Christmas decorations (4 stockings) are put away. Until next Christmas…

Back to Reality.
Mild depression is setting in as it starts to sink in that I have to go back to work tomorrow. And not only that, it is Jay’s month end so I am flying solo in the evenings. Ugh. We have a rental home inspection tomorrow, so I have been trying to get the house in shape for it (although I can’t hide the spot where the bike and the drywall got in a fight and the bike lost).

The kids start in their new classrooms tomorrow at daycare, so this should be interesting. Hoping the change won’t be too much for Ty. Just as the poor kid was getting used to things, he has to start the new year in a new room. It is interesting here that they try to get kids on a school year schedule way before they are in school.

The school years start in January. This is the last year that Ty can be at his daycare. If we are here beyond next December, he will start kindergarten here. I have filled out an application to get on a waiting list at a nearby school that some other expats’ kids go to. Not sure if he will get in. Crazy to think I have to think about this a year in advance.

Which leads me to thoughts about school for Ty when we move back to the states. We live in the Davenport West school district. I think he will go to Buffalo elementary, Walcott Middle, and West High (assuming we stay in the Quad Cities). I am debating looking into private schools in the QC. If anyone has any thoughts or opinions about this, feel free to send me a message. If I go the private school route, do I need to be submitting applications now, or is it not as back-logged at home?

Quiet Evening.
When Ty wakes we will go to the grocery store, cook dinner, and relax before the busy week ahead. G’day mates!

Really Super Hot

Pools.
Ty had swim lessons Saturday morning at 7:30. Jay, Lily and I were all sweating like crazy – usually the morning lessons are great because it isn’t too hot yet. Not today… Ty has floating and swimming to the bottom of the pool down pat. I think all he needs to do to move to the next level is figure out the proper kicking technique. He does a bicycle kick instead of a swim kick.

So we thought we better go practice at the big pool since he doesn’t need his life jacket. And it was hot, so we could all use a dip in the pool. There were lots of people there, which was fun for Ty. A bunch of the kids were playing with the sinkers that we brought. I love to hear him say “Do you want to play with me?” We only stayed for about an hour because I could feel myself starting to burn (in the water with heaps of sunscreen on).

20140104-113852.jpg

20140104-113901.jpg

This is what an Aussie heat wave and lots of swimming does to my boys.

20140104-125112.jpg

I got Lily signed up for 6 month swim lessons. She starts January 25. I figure since we are at the pool every weekend for Ty, and are going to be doing water activities for the next 2 years, best to get her in and comfortable in the water. She might be swimming before she crawls…

And More Pool.
After naps we were still really hot. No better way to cool off than to jump in the pool. Ty didn’t wear his life jacket in the hot tub this time (we were always right by his side) because he wanted to pick toys up off the bottom of the pool. He did awesome! Took him a while to figure it out because the hot tub is deeper than swim lessons and the big pool, but once he figured it out he was golden. He swam across the hot tub without our help, even coming up for a breath and going back under. You can watch the video on my Facebook page.

Sorry we didn’t do too much exciting stuff today, just way too stinking hot!

I Work OUT

03 Friday Jan 2014

Arangalay.
No, that isn’t a typo. It isn’t really an actual word. Ty made it up.
Arangalay (ah-RANG-ah-lay): noun the rough buggy path between our neighborhood and the grocery store.
Ty ran the entire arangalay when he and Jay went to pick up dinner Sunday night. It is pretty far, so I am impressed that he ran the whole way.

Bike.
When they got home, after getting a workout from the run, ty must have been on an adrenaline high, because he wanted to go for a quick bike ride. He is doing much better on his bike. He was moving along at a good pace, steering, and didn’t look terrified. Yay! Back on track.

Triathlon.
So if you think about Ty’s Sunday, he swam, ran, and biked. You know, his favorite song is, “I’m sexy and I know it – I workout!” He is an inspiration to us all…
I know, I have an idea! I will be his triathlon coach and will “run” along side him in the buggy. Just in case he gets tired and needs a ride home.

Super Bowl.
Jay rode the train into the CBD to meet some people from work at a pub to watch the Super Bowl. He had a good time, and it was nice for him to test out the train situation before we venture out on it with the kids. It took a good hour and cost him $30 round trip, so we won’t make a habit out of taking the train. But, it might be fun once or twice.

20140203-185332.jpg
He said that they didn’t air the commercials, so I am glad that I didn’t take the day off. The commercials are my favorite part! And they had “wings” but they were a pretty sad attempt at American style chicken wings. Mmmmmmm….Hooters crack wings………

Speed Racer.
Ty had a great day at school, and Lily wasn’t due to eat immediately when we got home, so we got Ty’s bike out and went for a ride. This time he went all the way to the end of the road (at least twice as far as yesterday) and he went at a pretty good clip. He was pretty far ahead of us most of the way home. He just needed to gain a little confidence. Good job Ty!

Doctor.
Jay went back to the doctor to have a follow up appointment for the ear infection he has been fighting all weekend. He seems to be doing much better. Yay!

That’s all the updates for now. Sorry I don’t have any new pictures for this post. G’day mates!

So Hot!

SAHM.
To all of you stay-at-home-moms out there…bless your heart. Yesterday was really fun. Today was a little more challenging. Ty had a make-up swim lesson from when we were in New Zealand. I felt like a rock star mama taking both kids and not having any trouble managing on my own. I thought since I was so good I would push my luck and stop by the home store shopping mall. I picked up some sinking pool toys to help Ty practice going underwater. Then we walked over to the Pillow Store to buy inserts from some souvenir pillow cases I bought in New Zealand. Ty must have gotten a burst of energy from the air conditioner (it is hella hot here today) and decided the store was a playground. So we didn’t do any other shopping…

While Ty was eating lunch, Lily woke up hungry. I went upstairs to feed her and left a bit of Pepsi in my can on the table. Rookie mistake…

Fast forward to nap time 20 minutes later. Ty wanted to sleep in the downstairs guest bedroom “the fort bedroom”. It has French doors and a pocket door to an attached bathroom, which he thinks is pretty cool. He got to sleep in there with Jay one night when he was sick – close to a toilet. He picked out 3 super short books so I thought, great, he will be asleep in no time. And then he got crazy. Jumping on the bed, running around, speaking jibberish. And then Lily decided to throw a fit. I couldn’t get her calmed down, so I tried taking her upstairs to our dark closet. The entire house is pretty bright so if she is tired sometimes the darkness helps put her to sleep. I just about had her calmed down and crazy caffeine kid came running upstairs throwing binkies and toys and burp towels in the closet. Open the door. Close the door. Fake cry really loud. Open the door. You know, just trying to help…

I tried putting her on the floor in the toy room, which made her quiet and happy long enough for me to finish Ty’s books. Hug and a kiss and sweet dreams. 2 minutes later…”mom, I’m going toots.” And that, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, is the proof that he did drink my Pepsi. Little stinker…

I think he is finally asleep now. I haven’t heard any rustling around in that room for a bit. Hopefully lily will fall asleep soon. This mama needs a nap… :). I could not do this gig full time!

Sweet Dreams.
Ok, this makes it all worth it…

20140103-144606.jpg

Mail!
We received our first Christmas card in the mail! It was so exciting to get real mail. Thank you Pisel’s! Ty put the big picture on the Christmas tree (haven’t wanted to take it down yet) and the little one in his favorite little box.

Hot.
Have I mentioned how hot it is? Wowza! The air conditioner can’t keep up. We are sitting in the house just sweating. We try to keep the house at 23* Celsius (73* Fahrenheit), but it has been stuck on 27 today (80). I think it was only around 87 outside, but it doesn’t feel like 87 at home. Must be because there is no ozone??? Tomorrow is supposed to be 93. We are trying to think of cool activities to entertain the kids. Don’t really want to be outside!

Rabbits.
The rabbits here are freakishly huge. I have only seen one, but if jay hadn’t said it was a rabbit I don’t think I would have believed him. Bandit would have been scared if these things. I am reading a book about Australia called “In a Sunburned Country” (written by a Drake alum) and the author provided some fun facts about the rabbits here. In the 1859 some dude brought 24 rabbits in from England so he could have something to shoot at. Those 24 rabbits had nothing better to do than make babies and eat the lush crops. There is no natural predator in Australia for rabbits. It was almost 25 years later (and over 2 million acres of land) before a solution was discovered. A virus was was spread among the rabbits killing 99.9% of the rabbit population. Unfortunately the 0.1% were immune to the virus and soon started breeding again, passing their immunity on to their offspring. There are now over 300 million rabbits taking over Australia. Unbelievable. Now I understand why Customs is so thorough with their search for plants and animals being brought into a country…

Silly Putty

Ty got some Silly Putty from friends for his travel backpack. I have gotten a kick out of all of the random places that I have found the Silly Putty. I hadn’t seen it for a while, but as I was cleaning the toy room I found it squished in the bottom of a basket. Unfortunately a dead bug was also squished in it, so the Silly Putty (and the bug) has been laid to rest. Here are some pictures of the places I found the stuff. 🙂
